BiBottomBoy Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 New studies show that in couples where one partner is infected and the other isn't that a drug lowers the odds of transmission to the negative partner by 96 percent. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703730804576319043572865406.html?mod=WSJ_hp_LEFTTopStories Quote
Guest hitoallusa Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 I think it's a very significant finding. New studies show that in couples where one partner is infected and the other isn't that a drug lowers the odds of transmission to the negative partner by 96 percent. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703730804576319043572865406.html?mod=WSJ_hp_LEFTTopStories Quote
BiBottomBoy Posted May 13, 2011 Author Posted May 13, 2011 Yeah, 96 percent is a serious number. Quote
Guest hitoallusa Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 One of the questions I want to ask to the corresponding author is how severe are the side effects of drugs they used. Another thing is they don't mention whether the study participants used condoms or not. I guess there is no way of knowing it because they can only encourage safe sex. atazanavir (300 mg once daily) didanosine (400 mg once daily) efavirenz (600 mg once daily) emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (200 mg emtricitabine/300 mg tenofovir disoproxil fumarate once daily) lamivudine (300 mg once daily) lopinavir/ritonavir 800/200 mg once daily (QD) or lopinavir/ritonavir 400/100 mg twice daily (BID) nevirapine (200 mg taken once daily for 14 days followed by 200 mg taken twice daily) ritonavir (100 mg once daily, used only to boost atazanavir) stavudine (weight-dependent dosage) tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (300 mg once daily) zidovudine/lamivudine (150 mg lamivudine/300 mg zidovudine taken orally twice daily) Yeah, 96 percent is a serious number. BiBottomBoy Posted May 14, 2011 Author Posted May 14, 2011 The problem is that if you ask couple if they used condoms every time, they'll say "yes" whether or not they actually did. They also didn't ask the couples if they had anal sex. Quote
Guest jimboivyo Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 I'll believe it when it hits the market. Just like the 'breakthrough' a few months ago that was debunked, this is just another media press kit. I'd like to think a cure is right around the corner, but the reality of it is that HIV is still around, still killing people and is not a manageable disease (like diabetes). Quote
BiBottomBoy Posted May 14, 2011 Author Posted May 14, 2011 What's a shame is that so many of the younger generation do look it at like diabetes. Quote
