Will Religious Redneck Win Idol?

After meeting Lady GaGa last night, Idol contestant Scottie McGreery felt the need to kiss his crucifix, apparently to ask god for forgiveness for having met with the sinner.

The right wing Christian vote, as well as the redneck vote, is his. The question becomes whether the fans of real music will actually vote for the proper winner, James Durbin, whose voice can easily contest with Adam Lambert's.

The voting is closed, and the result will be known tonight. My thinking is that the younger girl will be sent home tonight, then Scottie next week, leaving a finale of Haley Rineheart and James Durbin, which Durbin, of course, will win.

(Don't blame me if I screwed up a name...I did it from memory at 730 in the morning!)

My "sources" are telling me that for weeks now Scotty has received more votes than all of the other contestants combined. So he will most likely win it.

I hope that Scotty does not win. I have not liked him since he was part of that group that kicked out the gay kid in the early days of this season.

I never American Idol so I don't know what is going on but my non-christian friend likes him so much so I asked her about him. She is not aware of this? When did this happen?

Yeah, for some reason this escaped my radar. I mean I'm not into the show, but that seems like a huge piece of news.

After learning of the kid's disdain for Lady Gaga, his efforts to block a gay kid from his singing group, and his redneck attitude which is usually consistent with anti-gay views, for you to say you would vote for him indicates to me that you have not thought this through very seriously. I have spent some time lurking, deciding if I want to jump in and post, but really, if this is the prevailing mindset here, I'll be a short-timer!

Oh my I'm sorry. what's going on with Lady Gaga? I don't follow the show so I don't know. I asked people here about that gay kid incident and nobody replied. My friend who follows the show is a strong atheist and she didn't say anything about those incidents and just told me our local is going to win and he is so cute. I just agreed with her after seeing his photo somewhere. I will ask her about it when I see her next time. Sorry for my ignorance and I hope you can forgive me. Welcome to the forum. Hugs~~

What's wrong with you hitoallusa? One minute you welcome Erostotle to the forum and then in another post you tell him to "please leave us alone" Make up your mind - which is it?

You seem to fire "off the hip" a lot without having any knowledge about what you are saying and many, if not most, of your posts are "goody two shoe" remarks that are meaningless. If you're stupid enough to vote for an American Idol contestant that is homophobic, that's your business - I just really don't need to hear about it.

And I truly hope that all this BS doesn't Erostotle to stop posting. Don't let it get you down kid!

I don't know what the prevailing mindset is about voting on Idol. I think we all have different opinions. I am a Haley fan myself. I love her and hope she wins.

As for Scotty, I have not liked him or his group when the kicked the chubby feminine boy out of the group in the early weeks of the show. He came back and said he should have stood up for the boy but didn't. That told me all I needed to know about him.

In the end, it is a competition about singing. I love the show and I watch it and I am sure some are upset that Scotty seems to be catering to his core group, and I have no problem with that. He is a kid himself and will make mistakes. We all do.

Well I am not aware of him being homophobic so I don't know what you are talking about and I'm not sure how a contestant on a TV show can display an anti-gay sentiment and still be ok? Did he really kick someone out of the show for one being gay or is it just your speculation? I don't know what happened on that show. If he is a good singer then he will win. Based on what I heard he is so I guess he has a great chance of winning. If not I bet there are other great opportunities for him.

As far as Erostotle, I don't think my mere opinion doesn't matter much here. My opinion doesn't represent everybody's opinion here. It clearly shows that most people are against Scott so that will satisfy him. I hope he stays and not offended by my opinion. It's just a simple opinion whether it's stupid, shallow, and dumb. I hope I didn't offended anybody but if I did I apologize. Zipperzone I hope this explains my position.

Hito, if you don't stop apologizing for being alive everytime someone criticizes one of your post, I'm gonna be seriously pissed off at you; I mean offended big time.

And, dude, don't even think about apologizing for the post I just quoted lest I pack a couple of extra oxygen tanks in the car, borrow a pistol and come hunt you down. <_<

Just post your stream of conciousness posts as often as the spirit moves you and, damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead. Near as I can figure it out, only TY and OZ have a finger on the censor button and they're both pretty relaxed about what gets posted here.

If people post something that is witty, intelligent, interesting, or even just one of the above, then I hope they post a lot. Monopolizing a board with inane comments is tolerable only because there is an ignore button, which I do use on occasion. Lookin doesn't post a lot, but when he does, I read it. We need more of that. Wouldn't it be best to known as someone who has something to say, and only speaks when he does? God knows I have posted some wasted comments, so I am tolerant, but only to a point.

Lucky I don't think you are a mean person I just like your straight forward approach and I just love it. I love Lookin's posts too and I love everybody posts here by the way. I know my posts can be problematic but I don't think they are inane. Yes you can ignore me and that's fine with me. Most of my posts are just short in one sentence so I think you can skip them easily. I promise I will reduce the number of my posts here though.

I open up myself here and share my life. That might be inane to you but it's not to me. I open up my medical conditions and hardship here and yes it may not be relevant to you but they are to me. Maybe I am very weird in a sense that I can't get along with people here. I can't force you and others to accept me as who I am. If I cause too much discomfort other people then I will leave but at least try to work with me before I do that. I honestly can't change myself right away but if you can give me some time then I will find a way. Hopefully I will since I want to be part of this community. I will leave if it doesn't work out without any grudge but let me know if I push your limit.

I do think Scott is a good singer and his religious background should not count against him. I don't think that statement is inane at all. It's very relevant to this thread and I'm just saying it. If you don't like that then it's unfortunate. When you hire a pilot you hire someone who can fly well. You don't disqualify him because he is a christian or a gay. That's the right to do.

You are no doubt serious in your remarks, so I take it that you endorse hitoall telling a new poster to "stay away from us." I about gagged when I read what he wrote. Who is he to say that in the first place, and who is he to speak for "us?" We need new posters, people who actually have something to say.

So we have him telling someone to stay away, then another telling lurker speaks to stop posting about his trip. Not a good day for MER. If you want to support this, fine. But I was shocked by it, and I can't imagine a new lurker coming in if he expects to be told to "stay away" by someone who himself is quite recent. As I said when our posts crossed, if someone has something to say that is intelligent or witty or interesting, then fire away. Don't just post any crap that comes to our mind if you want this site to attract anyone looking for some interesting conversation.

Lucky I don't want other posters being criticized for my actions. I'm pretty sure that MsGuy didn't mean it that way. I will leave the forum with my silly posts. Wish you all well.

I am not asking you to leave. There should be room for all of us. All I am encouraging is quality over quantity. I was distressed at what you said, and I was distressed that someone told lurkerspeaks not to post. I do recall that on a number of occasions at the other site you claimed you weren't going to post anymore, so I am not too worried that you will leave. I do wonder what your interest is, given that you don't hire escorts and are recently married. But it is your choice to post here and I am not telling you not to.

If only what you say were true!

It SHOULD be a competition about singing but unfortunately it is more of a popularity contest. The same thing applies to Dancing With The Stars. People vote for their favorite "star" even if their dancing is shit.

As there is no way to verify who gets the most votes, one must put their trust in the producers. A bit of a stretch IMO. They could so easily manipulate the results in order to achieve a higher viewer count which equates to more advertising dollars. Am I cynical? Damn right :excl:

Entertainment of the masses What an interesting concept. Given these "endless contests" and the level to which the laugh-tracked sitcoms have sunk, is there any hope for future generations not to become lobotomized idiots?

Isn't that the truth. That's why I refuse to watch any reality TV programming. The only ones I will watch are singing contests like American Idol or X Factor. When I lived in Europe I loved the Eurovision Song contest which just happened on Saturday. But we can't see that in the US because of all the music licensing issues. BOO

God save the scripted DRAMA PLEASE

Speaking of which, NBC announced their FALL TV schedule today with some interesting TV shows like the Mad Men like "The Playboy Club" and the Glee-like "Smash".

The licensing is the worst, most old-school thing ever. I can't wait until this generation of execs retire and people who know what "worldwide" and "internet" mean take the helm.

Also - YES, save the scripted drama. I just got into watching Game of Thrones, and while I'm not sure I love it I can say that it's awesome to see such an all-encompassing, grand story being told. It's like a breath of fresh air. It's like watching a little movie every week.

It becomes glaringly obvious as each year moves on that network execs have their heads up their asses. And not in a good way.

That's a really good question, ZZ! I'm sure some members of future generations won't be lobotomized, but I bet a goodly number of those who rely on television for their daily mind-fill will definitely be dancing pretty close to the edge of idiocy.

I think one of the long-term trends that has been moving us in the direction of lower-quality television is the sheer number of channels and programs that make large audiences a thing of the past. And, without large audiences, there isn't enough advertising revenue to hire good writers and talented actors. Reality TV doesn't require much in the way of writing or acting, so look for more of it in the years ahead.

As there are more and more channels with more and more hours to fill, the good programming gets used up pretty quick and we're left with stuff that nobody has put much thought into, except the thought of how to run an extra commercial or score some product placements. For the most part, I think we masses are being 'entertained' by hacks.

On the plus side, as our entertainment becomes less cerebral and more primitive, we should eventually find our way back to our roots. rolleyes.gif

But it might take some hard work, and it won't always be easy.
