Guest tomcal Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 I am going to Brisbane and Cairns the last week of March and first week of April for a week of diving on the Great Barrier Reef and have 3 days before the dive in Brisbane and 3 days after in Cairns, but from what I can find, the availability of guys looks really weak!! Rentboy only had 3 guys listed under 40 in Brisbane! Can anyone recommend any gay bars? Quote

Guest tomcal Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 A followup to this trip. While there is virtually no escort activity that I found in Cairns and not much of a one in Brisbane, the boy watching was GREAT! Brisbane is a beautiful modern city that sits on the coast with a river meandering thru it. I could definitely live there, very clean and with all the ammenities of a bigger city. The climate is similiar to Miami. The % of hot guys was really impressive to me. We stayed at a hotel in Brisbane that was right downtown next to the major pedistrian outdoor mall and 8 blocks from one univerity and across the river from the other one(within easy walking distance of the hotel). So there was alot of college age guys around. One thing that I found surprising, On Sat. morning, we walked across the bridge to catch one of the local boats that cruise and make stops along the river, we had to walk right along the edge of the campus as it sits on the river bank. The were a group of about 15 guys plus their female admirers practicing brazilian capoeira/mix martial arts. 1/2 of them were only wearing their jockey underwear! not shorts/speedos/gym shorts..just regular underwear. this was on the lawn between two major sidewalks that everyone has to walk along to get to the river landings for the boats.. needless to say we missed the first couple of departures! On the drive from Cairns to our resort about two hours south we passed thru the town of Innisfail, which has a population of 8,000 , which I swear, 3,000 are hot 20yr old guys! we went thru this town about 4 times during the week, and stopped for lunch on our way to rainforest hikes inland from this town. the subway sandwich shop became a quick favororite has it had 4 of the hottest 18 -21 yr. old guys I have seen in a long time! The same in Cairns. The best way to meet local gay guys in Cairns and Brisbane was the Grindr app for the Iphone! seems everyone is on it there! Summary: great vacation, great scenery, friendly people, no rentguys! Quote

According to Wikipedia, Innisfail is popular with backpackers seeking employment in the fruit picking industry. Quote
Members msclelovr Posted April 22, 2011 Members Posted April 22, 2011 Tomcal, thanks for your report. I was there at the time of the almost-Biblical floods and devastation. I know Aussies are hard-working and efficient, but what did you think of the clean-up operation? Has it been completed or is there much to do? Quote
Guest tomcal Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 Tomcal, thanks for your report. I was there at the time of the almost-Biblical floods and devastation. I know Aussies are hard-working and efficient, but what did you think of the clean-up operation? Has it been completed or is there much to do? In Brisbane, everything looked totally normal! We did not go to the western suburbs where the heaviest flooding was, so I can't speak as to how that looked. The Metro area of Brisbane looked totally normal. We drove an hour north of the city to go to the Steve Irwin Australia Zoo and didn't see anything that looked different. When we flew up to Cairns, we got a car and drove about 2-1/2 hours south to the small town of Mission Beach, which took the direct hit from Cyclone Yasi on Feb. 2, it was a Category 5, over 130mph, the resort and almost all houses building were fine due to very strict contruction laws and roofs and buildings for the most part withstood the storm fine. BUT the rain forest looks like a Atom bomb went off! the area has many hills/small mtns and all you see is hills looking like they are dotted with telephone poles at the trees have no leaves. Thousands of trees are down, and as we drove the roads around the area it was terrible...but the leaves are starting to sprout on the trees standing and a good number of the coconut palms along the beach made it through. the wildlife is more harmed by the lack of food than the actual storm. We saw flocks of Black cockatoos with young that we were told were about 4 months old at the time of the cyclone that made it through but were now spending the daytime along the beach looking for food which was in short supply due to all fruit/nuts being stripped off the trees by the Cyclone. We drove about 30 miles inland to get to rain forest areas that were untouched by the storm. That countryside was very scenic with valleys containing mostly dairy/cattle farms surrounded by hills covered in rain forest. One area we enjoyed was a drive we took to Millea Millea, an area about 40 miles west of Innisfail. driving a narrow road thru the farms and forest you come across 3 separate waterfalls that were very beautiful and we were the only ones there. I think I enjoyed that almost as much as the diving on the reef. I took mostly video but here's a couple of pics of the waterfalls we found and one of downtown Brisbane. Quote

Guest tomcal Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 Tomcal, I'm wondering...you mentioned something about a resort...did you stay at the Turtle Cove Beach resort? No, we stayed at Castaways. It was small but very nice. Below is the view from our room. Quote
