Members Lucky Posted January 4, 2011 Members Posted January 4, 2011 I liked the guys on the British TV show SKINS, but I could never understand what they were saying. Now an American version is coming to MTV on January 17th, with the prospect of lots of bare skin in HD! http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/04/arts/television/04skins.html?hpw Quote
TotallyOz Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 I really did enjoy this show from UK. I hope the MTV version does it justice! Quote
Guest lurkerspeaks Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 For those (such as myself) who have not seen the British version, it is available on netflix for home delivery or online viewing..I just watched the premiere episode. Will watch more as time permits.. Quote

Members TampaYankee Posted January 4, 2011 Members Posted January 4, 2011 There are a number of Brit shows I'd like to watch, if only they had American subtitles. While we share a common language it is very clear that we do not share a common tongue, common ear or common colloquialisms. I cannot do the word processing at the rate the dialog is delivered. Quote
Members Lucky Posted January 4, 2011 Author Members Posted January 4, 2011 The NY Post tells us not to get our hopes up on the bare skin thing. with cast pic: http://www.nypost.com/p/entertainment/tv/skins_deep_NMXGttcQHO3zJzIgS5jcQJ Quote

The more you watch the better you will get. Maybe DVDs and some streaming versions have CC/subtitles? But that won't help with colloquialisms. Still, I've gotten to the point where I can even make it through dense cop shows and catch most everything. Big improvement from years ago when I couldn't understand why so much of their political humor kept mentioning Military Police... Skins is slang for condoms, by the way, and the original version of the show was great. Usually American re-dos are nothing but massive disappointments, but I'm curious to see this and being human, though I don't hold out much hope. Skins was amazing because it was basically an American concept (90210) told in a way so opposite of the vacant, idiotic American style (especially prevalent now with shit like The Hills) that I really cared, which even when I was that age I never did about any of our similar shows. Members KYTOP Posted January 21, 2011 Members Posted January 21, 2011 It looks like the show may have some legal issues and may be violating Child Porn laws? It looks like some of the MTV exec's have ordered some cutting of parts of future episodes and even talked about legal problems they could face including jail time at a quickly called meeting after the first episode aired. If you had a teenager, would you want your teenager to watch it? Taco Bell has already pulled it's ads from the show. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/20/business/media/20mtv.html?ref=television http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2011/01/20/mtv-worried-scenes-new-series-skins-prosecutable-child-pornogoraphy-report-says/ Quote
TotallyOz Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 It looks like the show may have some legal issues and may be violating Child Porn laws? I read the articles you listed and I had to laugh. The main scene in question was one where a boy runs down the street naked. I didn't see anything sexual in that at all and I think crazy to give into the censors. That being said, I would not want the producers to risk jail time over this. I am sure if they did, the ratings would soar. May I ask someone that knows: Does MTV doing this on Cable have more leeyway than say ABC, CBS or NBC? Quote
Members KYTOP Posted January 21, 2011 Members Posted January 21, 2011 May I ask someone that knows: Does MTV doing this on Cable have more leeyway than say ABC, CBS or NBC? Yes but the actors, including the naked butt belong to underage teenagers. Therefore child porn charges could apply. If they had used an older actor that just looked young they would not have an issue. The issue may also be with what is now on the cutting room floor. Even nudity by underage teens that is on the cutting room floor could still present them with a problem. The show has been rated TV-MA for audiences over 17 years old but Neilson ratings show at least 1/3 of the audience was below that age. Quote
TotallyOz Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 What would be the difference in the scene in question here and that of Harry Potter's Equs performance? Quote
Guest EXPAT Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 People need to stop comparing the US version to the UK version. While it is inevitable that people will want to compare, they are different. I enjoyed the UK version (first season only). The US version is also very good. I'm enjoying that one as well. But everyone has to realize that unless it is HBO or Showtime AND they are over 18 we won't see the same thing. But that doesn't mean that the show will be bad. I think it is still a very raw show with some interesting story lines. I will be watching (at least a few more episodes anyway). I tell my friends that are looking for the UK nudity to just go rent a porn for heavens sake. . . Quote
Members MsGuy Posted January 21, 2011 Members Posted January 21, 2011 What would be the difference in the scene in question here and that of Harry Potter's Equs performance? Daniel Radcliffe was not underage when he performed in Equus. ---- Like porn laws in general, the anti-kiddie porn laws run into the "well, surely you didn't mean to include this" problem. No matter how rigorous your formulation, it will include stuff that isn't porn and exclude stuff that is. Ambiguity at the edges comes with the territory. Quote
Members kjun12 Posted January 21, 2011 Members Posted January 21, 2011 If you had a teenager, would you want your teenager to watch it? It would not bother me in the least to have one of my teen children watch this. There are many other sites where they can watch much worse things including total porn. Quote
Guest Cooper Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 I read the articles you listed and I had to laugh. The main scene in question was one where a boy runs down the street naked. I didn't see anything sexual in that at all... The "SKINS" episode with the 17yo (underage) actor running down the street naked, aired this week... There was a lot more to talk about than just his ass being shown. The boy had taken some Viagra and sported an erection for most of the episode... The appeal here is to the teenage audience. It deals with sex (including 2 lesbians), relationships, getting laid, masturbation, drugs, drinking, breaking the law, partying, and making adults out to look very, very stupid. Did I forget anything? I guess if I were in HS I'd enjoy this show but I'm not. Quote
Members Lucky Posted February 5, 2011 Author Members Posted February 5, 2011 You know, Cooper, I agree with you on this. But it does make me feel like an old fogie to be saying, well, "kids today..." The media throws sex in their faces constantly, and given their raging hormones, they eat it up. I think the media has more to do with the decline of America than the government does. Quote
Guest FourAces Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 I think the media has more to do with the decline of America than the government does. The media is a very strong factor in shaping society. However I also believe a large part of the problem for this issue is two generations of failed parenting. I would say I'm socially liberal however I feel that allowing your child basically to do what he wants and give him what he wants and be more of a friend to him than a parent is destroying the values most of us learned growing up. Sadly I do not see it getting any better. In fact we are still headed down the hill here Quote
Members lookin Posted February 6, 2011 Members Posted February 6, 2011 I tend to agree with you, FourAces. But then I wonder if my grandparents felt the same way about my generation . . . And their grandparents about theirs . . . Quote

I watched the first episodes but when this last one came out, I got bored fast and turned it off. I rarely do that but I think this how has run its course for me. Quote
