Members lookin Posted January 2, 2011 Members Posted January 2, 2011 Sometimes when visiting the Forum, I check the bottom of the main page to see who's here. I'm used to seeing 'Google' logged in, as their bot crawls around grabbing and indexing MER content for their search engine. Usually 'MSN/Bing' is here too, snagging our stuff for Microsoft's search engine. According to this article, webmasters can keep bots from indexing their pages, but I expect most webmasters welcome them with open arms as they drive traffic to their sites. Try typing "Annual Palm Springs Weekend" into Google's search engine, and you'll find Oliver's kind invitation on Page 1 of the results. Add "escort" to the search term, and we garner three of the top four hits! Personally, I'm not overly concerned about my stuff showing up on Google, but I do keep in mind that every word I type will be in their search engine archives within minutes of my hitting the 'Enter' key and, as far as I know, will stay there forever. That's why I rarely include more than two or three of my little proclivities in a single post. As if Google and Microsoft weren't enough, just a few minutes ago I noticed that 'Facebook' was here too. Never saw them here before, and got to wondering why Facebook would be interested in our modest doings. Any ideas? Quote

Members TampaYankee Posted January 3, 2011 Members Posted January 3, 2011 Every once in a blue moon I get an enraged communication complaining about the fact that his site screen name/email showed up in a google search and demand to be disenrolled immediately. What I don't understand is why people choose to enroll in a site of this nature using a sceen name or email address that they use for other purposes that another people might recognize from another context. What part of discretion do some people not get? Everybody should know that whatever shows up on the internet is there forever and can end up anywhere. If you want or need discretion then practice discretion in your online identity and contact info. Quote

What I'm wondering about is Facebook, and why they would be cruising the site, you should pardon the expression. I'm not a Facebook member, so it could be that they have their own search engine or are developing one. I just haven't noticed them before. Seems I recall Facebook doing some pretty snarky things in the area of privacy and, if I knew they somehow got even my eye color in their database, I'd think about taking additional precautions. By the way, many thanks to the folks who got us all these great smileys! Best collection I've seen on any message board. Quote

I never do that with my personal e-mail. Anything that is posted is visible. Facebook has started to crawl sites. IMHO, they are getting ready to compete with Google and Yahoo full force. They have tons of cash and want to spend it making money. I don't like their privacy concerns and I get pissed off when they change the policy but don't let me choose what to show. Quote

Guest twinklover Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 I googled "Twinklover" and found my profile here at MER on the third page of hits. A lot of people have appropriated my handle since I rolled it out on the Atkol forums in the 1990's and I see it used on myspace, facebook and blogs. There are even twinklover web sites. I remember googling "Twinklover" years ago and my posts at Atkol were on the first page of hits. No more. Here's to all those nasty bots looking at lookin. Quote
