Guest FourAces Posted October 9, 2010 Posted October 9, 2010 Since I am not home often (thats about to change though) I have fairly basic cable service. I pay for Internet, digital channels a few boxes, and one DVR. My bill runs $120. a month and that does not even include any pay services such as HBO or if I decide to rent a movie. Finally there are some solutions. Almost any broadcast network show I watch I can stream from their website (free), i.e. ABC, Fox, NBC, CBS. I can rent movies from Netflix ($10. a month) and stream them to my TV or watch them on my computer. Also, HuLu Plus covers most of the other programming I watch ($10. a month). Another alternative is Apple TV ($99. onetime fee) which will allow me to rent and stream movies and TV programs as well. My other concern is Internet access. Clearwire covers DFW and I can get a USB stick for $30. per month. Other mobile providers offer a like service. So for $50. per month I can have pretty much everything I currently use. That $70. a month savings is $840. per year. In escort terms I could hire 4 additional escorts per year with that savings With more and more options I am thinking of giving up on Cable TV. Am I missing something from above? Has anybody else done this already or also thinking of doing so? Quote

I don't know much about clearwire but I'm guessing it's some sort of mobile broadband card situation? Make sure you check the up and download speeds and the nationwide coverage (if you travel). I have sprint broadband and while coverage is nearly universal, it's frustratingly slow sometimes and I can't always mail big files. I wish that some some enterprising young lad could start a company that offers decent cheap cable service. Between crapcast and time warner, it's highway robbery if you want to have anything other than basic service. Quote

Where is the surprise? I had hoped that telecom companies would have undertaken competition with cable companies but that seems not to have materialized broadly. There is no room for 'some enterprising young lad could start a company that offers decent cheap cable service.' Congress has guaranteed that. Just another example of Big Business buying its way into favored position at the expense of the middle class. Quote
Members MsGuy Posted October 10, 2010 Members Posted October 10, 2010 TY, are you having trouble with the posting controls again? [no fair if you erase the evidence! ] ---- Edit: Hahahaha, you swept it under the rug while I was typing!!! Quote
Guest FourAces Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 NeedSome ..Yes Clearwire is somewhat like Sprints mobile broadband service. I def will check out the speeds before signing up. However, I live in a 4G area and starting in a few weeks will not be doing much traveling at all. Besides when I do travel hotel WiFi usually works ok for me. But I understand how the inconsistency of Sprints network can be frustrating. You might want to check Clearwire's site to see if they meet your needs any better. One other option I am looking into is DSL. I know its not the greatest technology but if I can match the basic speeds I have now for only #25. x month it might be worth the it to switch. ------- I think with the soon to be released Google TV and the recently released Apple TV we are seeing the beginning of the end of cable as we know it. As it becomes easier for the average consumer to get around cable and save money at the same time the subscription numbers will drop pretty quickly. At that point they will need to do something to improve their service and cost structure. Quote

[no fair if you erase the evidence! ] ---- Edit: Hahahaha, you swept it under the rug while I was typing!!! Funny you should notice. I made a post and then sought to edit/add to it. Imagine my chagrin when I noticed that I had repeated the orginal post twice more, albeit with the edits. I deleted one first thinking I had eliminated the lone duplicate. Then I noticed another duplicate lurking in the queue. Knowing when to stop digging... I said fuck it and deleted the second dupe and gave up on my lost cause to edit the original. BiBottomBoy Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 My Internet Service Provider, Free, gives me free cable with my Internet service. It's a pretty sweet deal, particularly when Free just became the first ISP in the world to refuse to co-operate with governments when they request data on who is using bit torrent programs and/or visiting kickasstorrents.com. At least this time you didn't erase somebody else's post! Quote
