Cost for a week in Bangkok

We have a really good thread going in the Latin America forum about what a week in Rio costs---hotels, meals, boys, sightseeing, etc.. How about getting the same going here for Bangkok? Assuming the exchange rate stays fairly close to what it is now, how much can an average American expect to spend for a week of fun, sightseeing, and sex?

Also, how easy or difficult is it for someone who has never been to Asia before and does not speak the language?

Not speaking the language in Thailand will make you equal to just about every other farang there. So they really appreciate when they see that you have made some effort to learn basic phrases.

As for spending, your mileage may vary. Oz probably, and I say probably, spends more than I would. But at $100 a night for a hotel, and $100 a night for entertainment, and $50 a day for the rest, well, it is doable!

Off fees for boys (taking them from the bar) are about 300-400 baht. The tip that is expected in Bangkok averages about 1500 baht for a short time to around 2,000 baht for an overnight. These prices are good for most of the bars on the gay street. If you go to some other ones, the cost is 500 less. If you get from GayRomeo, the rate is about 1,000 baht for the short time.

Fees in other cities are less than in Bangkok.

Hotels also vary in Bangkok. You can get a decent accommodation for about 1500 baht a night if you are staying in a local place. Many of the gay men that travel here stay at the The Tarntawan Place which is close to the gay area. They also like the Malaysia Hotel and the Pinnacle Hotel. I like the Babylon Sauna Bed and Breakfast as it is an amazing sauna experience if you like that.

Food can be done cheap. You can spend anywhere from 100 baht for a meal that is decent to 200-300 baht. If you go to a well-known chain, it will be more. Dick's Cafe in Soi Twilight is great and reasonable.

Those prices would include the off fee but not drinks. Those are the Bangkok prices . Even less outside the Big City

WOW Sounds like the airfare from the states is the biggest expense of the trip.

I'm arriving in November....a few days in Bangkok...then Pattaya...then back to Bangkok. I'm not a veteran by any means and I appreciate the comments about pricing. I've booked hotels used by a lot of the posters on here...Tartawan Palace in ...Bangkok and Cafe Royale in Pattaya. I know, probably more expensive than what I could find but compared with the hotels I'm used to in Rio, they are both very cheap and they are conveniently located. I struggle with the guys from the bars looking too young, especially in Pattaya but on the couple trips I've had before, I've always found someone I'm comfortable with. I've never done overnights before, so it was very informative to find how relatively little it takes to upgrade to an overnight. Thanks again for all the good information.

Btw....I've just recently discovered gayromeo....are the "users" on there really cheaper than the barboys? And are they looking for something different? A "relationship"? Are they really a better bet than the barboys? Thanks again your help.

Xiandarkthorne, I think Firecat meant a 2 hour fee of US$60 plus 500 baht extra, more or less, for an overnight.

Exactly what I meant. With Gayromeo you eliminate the drinks and mamasan tips and the off fees.. In Bangkok boys almost always will be happy with 1000 baht ($33) for short time and 1500 baht ($50) for overnight but not all will want to spend the night. So you save drink (260) Tips (100) and off fee (400) total of 760 baht or about $25 plus most Boys in Bangkok Bars expect 1500 bahtshort time and 2000 all night so you save another 500 baht.

I pay the same in Pattaya but there the fees to the boy are about the same are about the same as Bar Boys expect, Thats not to say many boys won't accept less then 1000, I just don't offer it.

With Gayromeo be specific what you want and that no Honey no Money. Also make sure they know you expect them to look like photos not 10 years older.

On balance I have just as many great hook ups for money with Gayromeo as I do in the Bars. Some people like to be able to touch the boy and for then Bars are better.

One other thing with Gayromeo you will find Boys who just want Sex with a Westerner, no money involved and usually just as good looking as any of the other boys.

I find mixing them both works pretty well especially since the Bars are only open 4 hours and Gayromeo is open 24 hours a day!!!

Question: In a number of the gayromeo ads, the boys will make reference to looking for someone to take care of them. I got a response yesterday from a cute guy on there saying, "I want you to take care of me. Can you do that?" Are they making reference to someone paying them for a date, or are they suggesting a longer term financial arrangement? I dont want to wade in waters too deep!

Just their way of letting you know they are a moneyboy and expect compensation.

They are all hoping to fall into a long term arrangement. But 95% of those who use that phrase will be happy with a short term encounter!!!

Thanks for the clarifications, guys. Sorry I haven't been logging in here much. I was checking through my diary and discovered that I had indeed paid a youthful gentleman of the streets the sum of 500 Baht back in 2008. My sincere apologies for the oversight.

The caveats were that he did not come from a bar (hence no bar fine or minimum expected tip) and it was for a "short time" as he had to go off, but since he returned to my room for more fun at about 3am the next morning and got another 500 Baht for his troubles, I would have to say that the disputed rate is probably still the going one for guys picked up from the streets.

A friend of mine in Bangkok says they'll almost invariably ask for 1000 Baht for 'short time' nowadays but the sum is negotiable to as low as 500 Baht, especially when the night is no longer young.
