SeatleBottom's Itinerary

Recommended Posts

SeatleBotrom, a new member, says he's shy but wants to participate. He also says he's going to San Fransico next month and would love to have an "itinerary."

I don't know the city at all, but I bet a bunch of you do.

Let's help out one of our fellow horny homos.

What should a shy bottom from Seatle do in the City of Brotherly Love?

Man, iced tea came out my nose I laughed so hard.

Well I'm going to be in SAN FRANCISCO from 9.23.2010-9.28.2010. I will be staying in the SOMA section of the city. Not really into the touristy sites but would love to see Alcatraz. I speak fluent Spanish so I was thinking of seeing the Mission District. Might also be game for some information on the Oakland/East Bay area.

I'll post more as the trip gets closer.

One of the infamous places in San Francisco is the Nob Hill Theater. They do nightly strip shows and have a very dark arcade area. I have not been to the Bay area in several years so hopefully someone can let us know if Nob Hill is still active.

Obviously Castro street is worth a walk and you will find a few nice cafes there to grab breakfast or lunch. I found the people to be friendly during my visit and the street a bit eclectic.

Hopefully others who have been recently there can add more. I know Townsend has a lot of knowledge on SF but I haven't seen any posts by him in a while. I believe Lucky has also spent a fair amount of time in the area too.

Thanks for the information Four Aces.

I'm going to do a little blog on here about the trip: from planning all the way to the conclusion. My writing skills suck big time so I hope I don't mess this up too badly.

Hey a travel blog would be awesome. And do not worry about your writing skills. I once had a blog and my writing skills sucked and most think the blog did as well :P

In an attempt to cater to my gay compadres, I have decided that my San Francisco stay this time will be strictly limited to gay businesses. With that in mind, I will restrict my wandering to the following areas: The Castro, Polk Gulch & SOMA. I will augment this itinerary with detours into Oakland (Adam's Point & Laurel) and perhaps a day trip to Guerneville (Russian River). I would like any information you guys may have about these areas.

Hey there! I hope you have a great time in SF!

The Castro is still quite gay, but just FYI many of the businesses are straight owned now. It's still a fun neighborhood, but it's just a tiny section of what the city offers.

Polk Gulch is almost completely straight now (many of the old gay bars are straight, Marina crowd type bars now) and I cant exactly recommend it.

And SOMA has the big dance clubs (The End Up is still open, but not always a totally gay crowd and Mezzanine has gay nights as do a few other clubs like Club Dragon)and other than that you can cover SOMA by hitting the Powerhouse, Eagle, and Hole in the Wall and the sex club Mack (all but the Eagle are within a couple blocks of each other.)

You will however miss out majorly if you don't hit the Mission IMHO.

Most people don't know how gay the Mission has become and you will miss the gay people that are mixed into the Mission's fabric (Almost half the units in my building are gay households for example.)

Basically, the Mission is the "un-Fisherman's Wharf." It's where most of the locals, straight, and gay, go to play. Great restaurants, galleries, bars and shops. I would really suggest at least taking a stroll between 16th and 20th streets on Valencia. They just expanded the sidewalks and put in more trees and some of the best shops are along that section (Paxton Gate and 826 Valencia next door are both pretty amusing and unique window shopping experiences.)

If you want an experience that is a little less whitewashed and where you could use your Spanish, the 24th street corridor from Mission to Potrero is like a slice of Central America.

Hope that helps a bit.

Feel free to email me directly too if you have any specific questions!

Great write-up Steve! The Mission is where I always thought I'd live, if I lived in the City. Although Saturday nights can be a little sketchy around 16th and Mission, the areas you're talking about have absolutely everything one needs for a good life and a good time!

You bring to mind one of the things I like most about San Francisco, and that's the neighborhoods. People can find just about everything they need right where they live. I usually hang out Friday afternoons at a long-established Polk Street watering hole that's been a neighborhood place since the seventies. Some of the regulars haven't been more than six blocks from their apartment in years.

Seattlebottom, I'm good for a couple beers if you'll be in the neighborhood. There's an eclectic crowd back on the patio, and I gaurantee there will be someone who can point you in the directions of your desires. The Marina crowd, if it comes, doesn't usually hit till six o'clock and I'm long gone by then.

PS: If you like, PM me about the Russian River. Turns out, that's another of my regular haunts. ^_^

Thank you so much Steve, that's the kind of local knowledge that I was hoping to get. I'll take Polk Gulch out and add Mission to my itinerary.

lookin, I don't drink alcohol but I love listening to locals talk about their city. I'll take you up on your offer.

Good points Lookin! I agree that the neighborhoods of SF are one of its best features!

16th and Mission (and Valencia to some degree too) can be a bit crazy on weekend nights, it is true....(and it's important to realize as well Seattlebottom that neighborhoods change very fast in SF from block to block...Mission street for example is much er...more colorful, than Valencia)

Lookin, if the bar you're referring to is the one I'm thinking of (near Clay street right?) that is one of the few places on Polk that I would have recommended, (and with Lookin there to play host I'd say it becomes a can't miss) so thanks for pointing it out!

And Russian River can be great fun, I would second Lookin's recommendation.

Have fun while you're here!

Neat, Seattlebottom. B) It never occured to me that you would be using Mer's blogging feature. I notice that Matrix and Looknyc have blogs too.

One problem. When I checked your blog, I didn't see any posts. ???

Nor on the other two for what it's worth. Did I miss something? Are MER's blogs functional yet?

I can see the blogs fine, however, It migh be easier to just do a simple thread on the subject.

I think entries might be visible now...I clicked on "Publish Entry" which might do the trick!

That did the trick!

Send me an email, and I'll give you info so we can meet up. I tried sending you one, but not sure if it got through.

Here's some good news: the weather's supposed to be excellent starting the day you arrive. Don't forget your layers though, as the fog and the Bay will conspire at some point to cool you down. smile.gif

Noticed your reviews on Steve Stacks and DamienDivinus the other day. Looks like you guys all had a good time!

Thanks for writing them too! Good info, well written, and enough detail to arouse my 'interest', if you'll pardon the expression. tongue.gif

Thanks, your check is in the mail!!
