Sure the lines for the Buffets were huge(I have never seen the line for the Wynn Buffet so long)but we walked right into the coffee shop-no line at all and the place was 1/4th full. Tons of peope in the fancy malls-but very few people actually in the stores. The casinos were packed-with people NOT gambling. Rates for the Rentboy.com Dirty Secrets party dates(which is also CES weekend)have dropped dranmaticly-private me if you need help finding a cheap room for the weekend. A couple of highlights from this Christmas in Las Vegas. The new Steve Wynn hotel ENCORE is just gorgeous.Mr. Wynn has set an impossible bar for other las vegas hotels to jump. The details and artwork in this hotel are top notch and the staff is the absolute best in Las Vegas bar none. Le Reve at the Wynn-what an incredible show I liked it much better tha "O" and the tickets are cheaper!Outstanding performances and incredible stagecraft-I leapt to my feet and cheered at the end of the show! Members RA1 Posted December 29, 2008 Members Posted December 29, 2008 Vegas has always been funny over certain holidays. Traditionally it has been virtually empty over Christmas but packed over New Year's Day. In between, very mixed. What you are describing is it currently is filled with tire kickers. They look but don't buy or don't buy much. It is amazing that so many businesses have a business plan so close to the edge. The Las Vegas hotels, the NY hotes, the airlines and many other businesses are screaming bloody murder when their business is down maybe only 5%; a little more in some cases. If my business was down 5% I would be thrilled it was doing that good in tough times. But I don't have a huge overhead. Thanks for the report. We will all stay tuned. Best regards, RA1 Quote
Guest voke Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 Vegas continues to hurt. Unemployment at 8.2% is the highest in 28 years. The buffets were packed because all week in the newspapers the casinos were offering locals one free meal with the purchase of a meal at full price. That's anywhere from an $11 to $24 savings, depending upon which buffet you visited. Airport traffic in Vegas is down 13% this past November over a year ago, which is the 11th straight month that has occurred. Christmas Day buffets a year ago were in the $40-$60 range. This year, you could eat at Spagos or any of the upscale places for $25 to $35. New guys are paying the $5 to post on CL, but by the looks of the pictures some have posted, I don't think they've selected the right line of work if they're attempting to keep bread on the table because of the layoffs by all the casinos. Hotel occupancy on the strip is running at slightly below 80%, which is why all the room deals. If you're local, I get emails daily offering me rooms for $49 a night at NYNY, MGM, etc. So my friends, Vegas is hurting. But it is a good thing for those of us still employed. Bargains are everywhere!! Quote
