All this talk of going south for good but affordable times floods my memory with thoughts of the brilliant Carmen Miranda, who saved dull Alice Faye movies from oblivion. One of her best songs from those younger and more innocent days has lyrics that are, by today's standards, prescient:

Ai, ai, ai, ai

Have you ever kissed in the moonlight

In the grand and glorious

Gay notorious

South American way*

*In its day pronounced Souse American in affectionate imitation of her accent.

Lyrics that are camp by today's standard were widespread then. The lines that follow the ones in the topic title go:

You'll be as gay as can be

If you will learn to "sí sí" like a Latin
