Test Pilot Cowboys and their successors the modern day astronaut have a long history of trying to drink dry the well since before the days of Pancho Barnes and Muroc. All this 'shocked, shocked' reaction in the press is faintly ridiculous. Anyway, not so hard to understand. As John Glenn famously asked, how would you feel sitting on top of 2000 (highly explosive) subsystems, each built by the lowest bidder? I have been on top of a Tuk Tuk in Thailand and the seat you sit in is on top of the gas. I always wondered what would happen if it exploded. I know my ass would be grass.
