Guest Conway
I've always wondered what criteria they use to compile these lists. I have stayed at two on the list, and while they were both nice, they don't fall into my personal top five favorite hotels. The two that I have stayed at had a certain level of formality that made them somewhat uncor=mfortable for a plain old rube like me to feel comfortable in. In my estimation, the greatest asset that a hotel can offer, after a great bed and a great bath, is the privacy to feel that I'm not being watched and doted upon every second of my stay. I also found it unusual that Chicago had two of the top hotels and New York City had none. I always think of New York as one of America's great hotel towns. Members KYTOP
I travel a great deal and haven't stayed at any of them. But I usually stay at Marriott brand or afilliated Hotels. So what are your top 5 favorite Hotels?
TotallyOz
I have only made it to 5 on the list. I visited many of the websites for the hotels on the list. They look great. I always prefer the big city hotels to the resorts and many of these are spa type places and all inclusive retreats. Although most of my favorite hotels did not make it on that list and will never be there, I like the intimacy of a smaller type of hotel. In Phuket, I like the Baan Yan Dee. In Bangkok, I like the Four Seasons and the Intercontinental. In Paris, I like the Intercontinental. In Kalua Lampur, I like the Ritz Carlton. In Rio, I like the Copa Palace. And in Sao Paulo I like the La Goa. Oops. Sorry, see how easily I get sidetracked.
Guest TNTTed
"So what are your top 5 favorite Hotels?" In order: The Peninsula - Hong Kong - most exiting views in the world (IMO, of course). The Lanesborough - London - supreme comfort and extraordinary service. The Peninsula - Chicago - comfort, service, amenities, and location. The Greenbrier - White Sulphur Springs, WV - old world elegance. Plaza Athenee - Paris - Oh hell, it was Paris and I was in love!
Guest RR
Have stayed at I think about 9 of these. What I find is they cater to you tremendously and they are always eager to please--as well as eager for a tip. Tipping is not a problem for service beyond the norm. I do prefer hotels as these, but agree with some of them you do feel as though they are watching each move you make. But, it is nice when you ask for something off the wall and they accomodate. Our profile at the Ritz Carlton requests crazy things like extra pillows, throws for the side chairs, Pepsi instead of Coke in the mini bar, and tea and biscotti on arrival. I must say they ALWAYS get it right.

Guest Barry
Never underestimate good ole Chitown hospitality.
Guest Conway
I have to agree, Barry. Having lived in Chicago for five years after spending the previous ten in New York, i'm completely sold on Chicago and its hospitality. It's just the fact that New York is such a great tourist destination. I thought, it would lead the list of US Hotels.
Guest Conway
I've never really ranked them in my own mind. But, some hotels I really have liked are: The Iriquois in New York because they know me and never fail to have my foam pillows in my room. The Pacific Terrace in San Diego (actually Pacific Beach) for their curved huge ocean front rooms and balconies. Le Montrose Suites in WeHo because of it's unique rooftop pool, gorgeous gay boy staff and the fact that it's a hideaway for many famous rock and hip hop musicians In Miami, the Delano for that incredible indoor/outdoor lobby and great comfortable beds. I'm a sports fan, so I have to vote for the Renaissance Skydome in Toronto as my final favorite. My five will probably never make anyone's list, KY. But, like you, I travel on business mostly, so my #1 priority is comfort, a good nearby dinner, and nearby sites of interest for when i am bored. Guest Barry
I have to admit I was surprised NYC wasn't on the list and pleasantly surprised that we were. :-)
TotallyOz
I called the magazine and asked them the same question. I wanted to why the Duville was not on the list. I have used that great establishment in the past and always marveled that the city of NY did not put in on one list or another.
Members SilverDollar
It is an interesting list and I have stayed in almost half of them. It is clearly slanted towards vacation/resort hotels versus busiess hotels. Thus they correctly rate a large number of Four Seasons properties, but fail to list the excellent Four Seasons Hotels in NYC, SFO, BOS. They also omit the great one in Nevis. The biggest omission in my view is the Connaught in London. Finally, the one listing I do not agree with at all is the Lake Palce in Udaipur. It is an aging dump and you are much better off there at the Uberoi.
AdamSmith
SilverDollar, fully agree about the various Four Seasons omissions. Criminally absent is the Four Seasons Milan, set in an architecturally exquisite former convent. Another couple I can think of that ought to rate higher than some on the list are the Mandarin Oriental Shanghai and the Adlon Kempinski Berlin. Some odd inclusions -- Ritz-Carlton Naples is nothing to write home about compared with several other U.S. Ritz properties not shown, for example the one in Puerto Rico. And some choices look to be a matter of subjective taste, such as including the Bel-Air but not Chateau Marmont.
Guest RR
I completely agree about the Ritz Carlton Naples beach property. It is in need of some updating. Many time beach hotels just cant keep up with the wear and tear from the wind and salt. However, the Ritz Naples Golf property is nice, but not like some other properties they have. AdamSmith
At their best Ritz-Carltons can be as good as anything going, but they can vary wildly one to the next. Their Palm Beach property was a dumper five years ago, and I see on their web site that it's only now being renovated. Remembered a few more places that outclass several on the list: http://www.soniathouse.com/ http://www.hotelletoiny.com/ (The toilets are by Spode -- I am not making this up.) http://www.leguanahani.com/ http://www.whitebarninn.com/
Members Lucky
Surely one of the best hotels in the world is the Suriwong Hotel in Bangkok. It's there when you really need it.

One thing about good hotels Lucky is LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. I don't think many have a better location for me than the Suriwong. Members Buddy2
I haven't stayed at any of the hotels. The list does seem geared toward resorts. I would have chosen the Adlon in Berlin, on the former east German side of the Brandenburg Gate. It's a beautiful hotel (inspiration for the film "Grand Hotel) that was completely rebuild after unification. The area is especially interesting at night, with both the Reichstag and Brandenburg Gate in lights. Also A+ service. The Adlon is most famous lately as the hotel where Michael Jackson held his baby outside the window for fans to see -- to much critical comment.
