Email Addresses (Survey Enclosed)

The thread in the other forum, about AOL email, brought forth some interesting information on email usage. Basically I believe it speaks volumes about people's email habits. So just for the fun of it here is a mini email survey :7

How long have you had your primary email address?

How many email addresses do you use on a regular basis?

Which email providers, web based or ISP/OSP do you currently use?

I've had my primary AOL address for about 15 years. However, it would be hard to decide which is my "primary" address, since I use different addresses for different purposes. I guess my primary AOL address would be my primary personal address.

I use my primary AOL address on a daily basis. I'll keep that address so long as AOL is in business. It would be very difficult for me to determine how many people have that address. Just recently, I was contacted by an old friend who had been out of touch for seven years but who had held onto my email address.

I use alternate email addresses to separate mail for some of my different personal interests. Most of these are on AOL. I use a couple of Yahoo addresses for escort-related email.

I have a personal domain based on my name (i.e., johnsmith.com). My close friends and family know that this email address and domain will be valid until I am deceased or technology changes radically. Email sent to this domain is currently forwarded to my primary AOL address, for convenience, but that's easy to change should I want to.

For business, I use different email addresses for different companies. My companies use different ISPs for mainly historical reasons.

I make heavy use of mail forwarding to make handling email easy and less time-consuming.

I have had my primary email address for almost 15 years with AOL. I have three different names on AOL that I use for different business or personal uses. I also have a company address that I have forwarded to AOL as well as my Comcast account that I have never given to anyone, but is also forwarded. My Outlook doesn't use AOL, but uses either company or comcast to send and receive. Just like BG, it's hard to say how many people have my address after 15 years, but for business reasons I will never give it up unless AOL goes under. Even if I become dissatisfied, I won't cut off my nose to spite my face.

Why does your AOL Address Book not contain that info?

A variety of reasons, including:

1) AOL has changed the Address Book over the years. They didn't auto-add email addresses to the Address Book until a few years ago. As an example, the friend who contacted me recently would not have been in my Address Book, even though he had my email address. Had I changed my email address, he would not have been able to get back in touch.

2) Other people give my email address to third parties.

3) I use two sets of business cards for one of my companies. One set has always had my personal email address and cell phone number printed on them, in addition to my work email address and phone number.

I couldn't begin to know how many people have that email address. But certainly the number is in the thousands.
