Guest Hedda
I'll be heading back to Thailand and Tara soon, after spending a few weeks taking stock of America. I'm taking the liberty of posting this here now, because I won't be able to post once I'm back in the saddle in Siam. Ever since the authorities threw that censor's button, I have been able to read but not post to this site from inside Thailand. Frankly, I'm happy to get back, not only because I miss my home there, but because America has become an almost alien land to me, especially in political terms. The President is either too stupid or callous to honor his oath to uphold the Constitution, using the war on terror to justify outrageoous breaches of his sworn legal duty to preserve and protect that document, and the opposition Democrats seem quite incapable of taking any public stands on principles that matter. As for Thailand, I'm anxious to return and witness first-hand the political struggle that is slowly and inexorably windings its way throught the legal system, without an Army tank in sight. Hopefully, the way its been going, and regardless of whether Thaksin or his opponents ultimately prevail, the resolution of this political crisis without military intervention will mark a historic turning point in the progress of civil and constitutional democracy in Thailand. I do wish, however, for the sake of my adopted home, that the opposition democrats in Bangkok and throughout the country would outdo their namesakes in the USA and come up with some principled and organized programs to fight systemic corruption in government and society. Being anti-Thaksin is not a policy that will advance this country's democractic aspirations, if and when power is transferred to someone else. Sometimes, one has to throw the baby and the bath water out to get a clean start. My impression is that most Thais are rightly cynical about the political process at work there now. Hopefully, when I get back, I will discover to my delight that my condo is, as I left it, and that I can read and post on GayThailand from within the country, the heavy hand of the Thai censors having been lifted. If not, and you're interested in an expat farang's perspective, I'll see you all on Hedda's Hopper, (http://radiofreesawatdee.blogspot.com) until something better and more accessible comes along.
