This has much to do with the drop in demand for petroleum products used in transportation, energy and manufacturing since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.

International oil purchases are generally settled in US dollars. In 2019, Thailand paid out $22.3 billion for imported oil. But consumption has slackened off significantly so there is a corresponding reduced need for imports and for dollars to pay for them.

Thailand was the 13th largest importer, just behind Singapore and just ahead of Taiwan.
