From Coconuts Bangkok

A proposal to extend closing time from midnight to 4am in some areas must be studied before it can go any further, the prime minister said today.

Word that the tourism ministry had proposed pushing hours back to early morning to generate revenue created a buzz today, but Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha quickly put the brakes on things.

Prayuth said the idea needs to be examined and relevant agencies such as the police or Interior Ministry consulted. He said he was concerned about the safety and well-being of party-goers.

Tourist Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakan said the idea was to stimulate the sputtering economy. He believes at least 25% more could be earned by keeping clubs and bars open another four more hours. Pipat’s proposal would it would only apply in certain zoned areas. Patpong, RCA and a portion of Ratchada are the only three parts of Bangkok officially zoned as nightlife districts. He also mentioned Patong Beach on Phuket and Ao Nang in Krabi.

Pipat said he had not discussed the proposal directly with the prime minister.

Closing times were moved up to the current midnight and 1am, depending on the type of establishment, during the administration of Thaksin Shinawatra to please social conservatives in his governing coalition.

Now that would for once be a GREAT achievement to undo this stupid, idiotic restriction. Should be easy to do as it originates form the much-hated red government...

The "much-hated Red government"? Just a couple of inaccuracies. Firstly, it was moderately left of a centre, hardly "red". Secondly, it was deposed by a bunch of kleptomaniac generals because  the damn peasants- the majority of Thais- had the audacity to keep on voting for it. That's the problem with democracy; it keeps getting in the way of the powerful. Hence the junta.

Tourist Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakan is very reasonable person ,he is trying to worn the government for the consequences on the Thai Tourism of the over strength of the Baht , the restrictions on visas and restrictions on opening hours of entertainment venues but for now with no much success .

Taksins pockets also ran pretty deep, those "damn peasants" were pretty happy to pick up 3-500 baht every time they voted for Thai Rak Thai and its analogs... they hand the villager a camera phone on the way into the polling station and when they came out with a pic of the polling card marked in the right places they received their bounty!

no inaccuracies, just a misunderstanding on your part:
"red" not as in socialist red, but in red shirts. The Thaksin side of politics was and is associated with the "red shirts", hence the "red government". Thaksin and his political outfits and proxies, are VERY obviously VERY  much hated by the elite establishments and especially the military (=coup and current government), for the very reasons you pointed out. That's what I meant, the policy of curfews was one of the Thaksin (red) governments, so should be easy to undo by the current government as it wouldn't entail a loss of face or other embarrassment for the current government as it was policies of the evil one.
