Boystown noise

I've been away on a project for the last several days and have only now caught up with this topic.

More than a few years back, I moved from one address to another.  In the process, I found a cache of photos from more than a decade earlier.  Looking at them I found that they did not match my memories.  The reality of the photos was much less than the joyful memories.

Fortunately, I've decided that I'll stop taking photos, except when they are of a boy I've met...I'll keep the memories, suspecting they might not be completely accurate.  My hope is continue creating new memories to add to those from the mid 90s and the 2000s.

I have very recent although not Thai related story to back you up.

Last weekend school friend visited me and it was our reunion after almost 40 years  so lots of catching of old times and old friends was to be done .

Subject came to vacation of 1978 we spent together with few other friends and he said ' I remember when we were on the bus from A to B and  J was beaten by drunk passenger "

of course I remember but it was on the bus from C to D, not A to B, said I.

He was adamant but I had solution, journal of that vacation in my attic. So I dug it and pronto : written by my own hand that memorable day "on the bus from A to B, J was hit in the face  by the drunk"

I was ready to bet thousands that it was C to D , so much about memory.

How did it become a gay beach? Was it a local government planning decision: "This section will be the gay beach, we give licenses for gay businesses there and another section we do for families with children"?

Or is it just naturual segregation? Gays group together and non-gays group together and that is how this gay beach came into being? Like we see in many cities where you have China towns and neighboorhouds were for example many Turks live. Not because of government policy (you are not forbidden to buy a house in China town) but because of that is just how human beings naturally group themselves.

So how was it with this beach? How it became the gay beach? Deliberate policy? Or natural segregation?

Deliberate policy of the city authority - Definitely not. Thais are certainly not known for town planning. More likely it would start with one or more gays and their Thai boyfriends favouring one particular concession. Perhaps the proprietors would see a business opportunity and would be especially friendly and attentive to those customers. The word would spread amongst the community that this part of the beach is for us. Adjoining concessions then would follow the trend and hey presto you have a gay beach. Thai boys looking for customers or daddies would start appearing which would attract more gays, expat or tourist.

It's absolutely true that cute guys attract older  admirers. I always wonder why  more saunas don't give under twenty- fives a cheap rate. The best afternoon I had in Babylon was when they lowered their entrance fee while the swimming pool was being renovated...large numbers of cute Thai guys outnumbered people like me.

At the gay beach the presence of cute guys could attract gays from the pools and bars, especially if the boys wore small tight speedos. Perhaps the proprietors could supply discounted food and drinks to boys who met that specification. I for one would welcome some eye candy.  Not sure how older ugly females could be discouraged from visiting our beach

and thanks God Almighty for that , otherwise we will never have thing like Patpong right in the city center and in steps of both MRT and BTS

don't they have  a right to look at cute guys as well? Specially those wearing tight speedos?

on serious note unfortunately open spaces mean open to everybody.

If somebody is allowed to create fenced of ' gays only ' stretch of beach , no doubt ' no gays' or more subtly ' no men escorted by ladies allowed s" section would follow.

I'm not a beach person at all but I suspect that simply not enough gay patronage is what did it with gay section of Dongtan beach. Nobody chased us or boys away, we just allowed others to fill the void IMNSHO

So even in the heydays of this gay beach it was not outlawed for non -gays to rent a chair there? So even in the best of days families with children, hetero couples could be seen in the gay beach? So it was only called the gay beach because you would find a higher concentration of gays there then you would expect statiscally? If statistically 1 in 10 is gay and you have a beach where 3 in 10 is gay then its a gay beach?

It wasn't  officially called a gay beach but you would find exclusively gay men there ,Thai boys seeking for clients or just enjoying  themselves and male massuers .families and heteros didn't sit here .there was also a small gay beach at Patong Phuket as well and it was easy and fun to interact with the boys there and ended at your room with one of them after a nice sunny day in the beach...

no,  but when 7 in 10 are , then it's gay beach as long as rainbow flag is raised

When was this so-called “heyday” of the Dongtan Gay Beach ?. Any opinions ?.

Certainly around 2005 to 2010 my impression that it was very gay then. Families, str couples and single females were, whilst not completely absent rather a tiny minority. In fact when you saw a younger lady the general opinion was that she liked being there because she did not get pestered.

I first rented a deck chair on the gay beach in 1996; by 2000, the Golden Age was over. Just one example; it was difficult to find a spare deckchair in the late afternoon.  By 2005, the beach was well past its sell-by date.....even if the quality of the water was improving!

Yes this is correct by 2005 the former prime minister Taksin started his new social order campaign and all the fun and nightlife  were gone.

There were far fewer families and straight couples back then. It's only recently that Pattaya has been marketed as a "family" destination. Also Jomtien was less developed, and didn't have all the hotels and condos that populate the beach today.

Unlike Bangkok, which I first encountered decades back, I only began visiting Pattaya within the past five years.  So while I can vividly remember the BoyzBoyzBoyz nightly parade, Sunnee has always seemed forlorn.  While I encountered the removal of the trees and the upgrade to Dongtan Beach, I have returned twie a year to the same area on the beach which is occupied by what appears to be gaggles of gays, many or most, with their local boys.  I have daily massage on the sand and have welcomed the "therapist" for a hotel encounter.

So, while I'm unable to compare, I do have a good gay time.

Boys on Dongtan Gay Beach some years ago. A common sight then

Thanks.    A great excuse to post more beach pics :p.    Whilst zoom range & picture quality is what the camera magazines used to review, the biggest issue was finding a camera that booted up & was ready for action before the boys were out of shot !     As can be seen in some cases below.     My current camera is better, but fewer boys.   The boys there now tend to be with farang.

[Edit:  Whilst looking for further pics on my hard drive, exif data for the photo in the post above shows it appears to be taken with my TZ3 on 22-12-2012!    Lots of zoom and cropping]

And whether Pattaya is better or worse, we just need to get on with it and make the best of what 2019 offers us.

Correction: TZ9 !

[Camera sequence has been TZ3, TZ9, TZ35 & TZ100, but due to few boys, I don't think the TZ100 has snapped one there yet].

good news for their admirers is that most boys pics above are still available and on the scene

Bad news is that they have all put up 10KG since the original pics!
