Feeling crabby

One of the disadvantages of being an older man unable or unwilling to accept that his sexual number is up is occasional visitations of crab lice. Surprisingly in a country with such a vast sex industry, the only treatment that seems to be readily available in Thai pharmacies is Jacutin Gel; it is effective but has to be left on all night. Does anyone know if any of the shampoos, which can be applied and then washed off within minutes, are available in Thailand (specifically Pattaya) and, if so, where?

Just ask for anti-lice shampoo from any English-speaking pharmacist. I've bought and distributed them to hilltribe and rural folk - several local brands to choose from and very inexpensive, as I recall.

I am aware that Thai pharmacies stock shampoos for the treatment of head lice (I presume that is what you are referring to), but I've read that they are not all that effective for treating pubic lice (a tougher breed obviously, foraging away in the depths of sweaty crotches). They don't contain the ingredient Lindane, which Jacutin does and which is the assured way of killing off pubic lice. Lindane, incidentally, is considered sufficiently harmful to other creatures, notably US, to have been banned in over 50 countries. I wonder if there is a nice herbal remedy for pubic lice on the market.

Sorry, Peter, you have zee bugs in zee bush.

There's Grandma's remedy. Herbal, not sure, & not very nice but have been told it works. I don't think you're going to like it, however.

Mix lard and salt and rub it on. They turn red, die and fall off.

Best stick to the Jacutin. Be sure to wash everything you've touched...touched you...'there.'

Take your clothing to a laundry that uses dryers; (Some Thai laundrys wash in cold water and hang the clothes on lines on the roof. That won't do.) the dryer heat should kill the nits & eggs, but it's best to iron the hems of sheets, etc.

(Before someone else mentions it.) The method of, "Shave one side, set fire to the other and, when they come running out, stab them with a fork," doesn't work. Thai flatwear is far too flimsey: the tines bend. Umm, I guess it might work if you have a lot of forks. On the other hand; too many forks got you sabre-toothed-crotch-crickets in the first place!

My first post about crotch lice. Cool!

Anyway, the lice shampoo you will find in Thai pharmacies is specifically for head lice. Do not use this for crotch lice. It is fine for head lice and not toxic. Head lice and crotch lice are different buggies. Generally, they don't travel between areas, but I suppose a person could have both types at the same time.

Secondly, the reason lindane is banned in the most of the civilized world is because it has been proven quite definitely that it causes CANCER. Like, alot. Like, easily. Like, if you use, you are most likely shortening your life. Just for crabs? If you can avoid using lindane, avoid it. Trouble is, I wouldn't know where to buy non-toxic crotch crab shampoo in Thailand. OK, I will tell you the truth. Once I had to look for this in Pattaya. I must have been to 20 pharmacies. I even called Bangkok Pattaya hospital. Its really crazy, but there you have it.

Also, if you have asthma, using lindane could kill you rather much more quickly than cancer. Like the same day. Like visits to the ER, if you are lucky. Funny the Thai pharmacists won't bother telling you this.

If the critters are just in your crotch and you aren't very hairy, you could try some alternative therapies. Success will be iffy, but it beats CANCER.

Shave off the all the hair. Apply mayonaise to the area and leave on for two hours. Change all clothes and linens and dry in a high heat dryer. In a few days, repeat the mayonaise. And probably again after another two days, and change any possibly infected clothing again as well. A pain in the ass? Yep!

If you don't shave off the hair, you will need a lice comb to comb out the eggs. Chances of success using mayonaisse would be less if you keep the hair.

Oh, another thing you can do to support this alternative therapy (which by the way will fail if just one breeding critter lives or one live egg) is to use a high setting hair dryer on your privates. Be careful not to burn it off, though I do hear some people enjoy pain. (High heat kills the eggs.)

Peter. When 'my friend' caught crabs 5 yrs ago, his doctor in London prescribed a liquid that had to be left on overnight, and the dose repeated about 6 days later to catch the new brood. Apparently you can't kill the eggs the adults deposit on your body... you have to wait for the blighters to hatch. The active ingredient in his liquid was Malathion. His Doctor apparently spent some time checking with the pharmacists to identify which of the many liquids on the market were 'safe' to use. If there had been a 'wash & go' alternative available then, I'm sure he would have prescribed it.

Wash your bed linen daily, and make sure it is ironed. The washing AND ironing process together should eliminate any lice or eggs deposited on the sheets to prevent them crawling back while you sleep. Likewise, wash and iron your daily clothing that you wear during this period.

Tis true, malathion is less toxic than Lindane.

Permethrin even less so.

I think the malathion you will find at the Thai druggists is only the shampoo rinse for the head.

The least toxic one contains permethrin. Was unable to locate in Thailand.

Aside from the washing, drying, and ironing, another tedious method for head and crotch is combing every day with a nit comb until you get all the nits. Perhaps some of you have detail oriented Thai boyfriends who could help ...

Safer options than lindane

Scabies:

* Crotamiton cream and lotion 10% (Eurax) - Rx

* Permethrin cream 5%, (Acticin, Elimite) - Rx

* Permethrin cream rinse 1% (Nix) - OTC

Head and pubic lice:

* Malathion lotion 0.5% (Ovide) - Rx

* Pyrethrum extract 0.33% with piperonyl butoxide shampoo (Rid) - OTC

* Permethrin cream rinse 1% (Nix) - OTC

Thanks for all the info. I went many years visiting Thailand without ever getting a 'dose', but have now had several in the past 12 months. Just the luck of the drawers, I suppose. I've been merrily smearing Jacutin Gel on the affected area, but the more I hear about lindane the more scary it sounds. The mayonnaise treatment sounds far too decadent for an innocent like me, but I will ask a friend arriving from America shortly if he can bring me one of the less toxic treatments, perhaps the one containing permethrin.

The moral to the story is to take a recognised preparation from home with you on your travels. That is what I do just in case its needed as well as anti viral pills for cold sores if they arise etc etc. Be like a good boy scout and be prepared.

The BF and I both contracted a case of pubic lice from a trick, and we used the over-the-counter stuff meant for head lice. It worked quite well for both of us. You might it a try.

I think that is a much better idea than using Lindane! Even it fails, you can try again. Crabs actually are a very minor issue healthwise. They don't carry disease and they won't kill you.

And catching them can be quite entertaining.
