reader Posted August 31, 2018 Posted August 31, 2018 From Coconuts Bangkok It’s got a champagne bar at the top and a magnolia theme so understated you have to study the details to find it, making itself seen in the interior’s curving lines and varying shades of cream. The Waldorf-Astoria Bangkok is classy like that. And, hey — it opened its doors to the public today. Sixty stories high and with 171 rooms, it’s in the center of the city at Ratchaprasong Intersection, between BTS stations Siam and Rachadamri. It’s the high-end hotel chain’s first Southeast Asian address. Most of the design is neutrals and designer Andre Fu — the man behind Singapore’s Fullerton Bay Hotel and Hong Kong’s The Upper House — told Coconuts that he was inspired, in some ways, by his own trips to the original Waldorf Astoria in New York as a child. ggobkk Posted August 31, 2018 Posted August 31, 2018 Welcome to the high end...I seem to remember that The Upper House in HK is priced at the high end of the Mandarin/ Peninsula range. Quote
reader Posted August 31, 2018 Author Posted August 31, 2018 Looks like their aiming squarely at the high-net-worth customers with low-end room starting in the 9,000 bht range. But I like to see new hotels opening because anything that adds to overall capacity is good for competition. With the closing of the Dusit Thani, a huge chunk of high-end rooms be going off line. This has allowed the 5-star outlets to up rates 10+% this high season. At first glance we might think so what because most readers don't stay in those places (at least no long term). But there is a trickle down affect and checking the 3-star range hotels in Silom for the coming high season, rates seem to be up in the 5+% range. Quote
