Baht Rising, Dollar Falling - Again

Recommended Posts

One week ago the news was reporting that we could expect the baht to have reached up to an exchange rate of 37 to the US dollar by today. So far, it's not exactly working out that way. Now the predictions are that the baht will fall again next week. Considering that most of the predictions rarely turn out to be accurate, it's more likely anybody's guess.

The financial brouhaha caused by the actions of the Bank of Thailand was supposed to stop the rise of the baht. Meanwhile, at this moment we're right back to where we were when all of this got started.

The exchange rates as of Saturday, December 30, at 8:55 AM, Thailand time are:

US dollar: 35.17

Euro: 46.30

British pound: 68.715

Australian dollar: 27.5575

Canadian dollar: 30.0075

The new government has gotten itself into an unenviable position, realizing too late that it reversed course on the economic changes too soon. It would be akin to the US Federal Reserve announcing a rate increase and retracting it because the Dow fell sharply in response (a frequent result).

The situation required time to achieve stasis. But the government's 180 degree turn around has failed to realize its original goal of stemming the flow of speculative funds and caused not only loss of face but sent the signal that the new leaders were unsure of themselves. Future decisions will be met with rising skepticism.

It looks like things are going to get worse before they get better.

Today the exchange according to xe.com is 33.65 baht per US dollar

and on the same page I saw the Bangkok Bank rates for 23 Feb 2007 as 35.34 buy & 35.99 sell.

I'm not sure where you are getting your information from, but my guess is that you're looking at a web site that publishes the offshore rates.

Within Thailand, the exchange rate opened today at 35.47 baht to the US dollar.

I would disregard the xe.com rates as they have only been quoting the offshore rate ever since the baht started rising some months ago.

If you use the Bangkok Bank daily exchange rates site it gives the actual rate you will get when changing money at a bank or bureau-de-change -- see: http://www.bangkokbank.com/Bangkok+Bank/We...es/FX+Rates.htm

Note: the travellers cheque rate is in the 'buying notes - sight bill' column.

Today's rates are:

Currency Description/Bank Note = Buying Rates

USD1 = 34.39

USD5-20 = 34.77

USD50-100 = 35.25, T/C = 35.42

GBP = 68.73, T/C = 69.45750

EURO = 46.37,T/C = 46.57750
