NIrishGuy Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 Maybe they should get special licences to carry weapons? Something that the word "abhorrend" could justify? hmmm, so what makes you think that they DONT carry weapons then eh as it wouldn't be the first bar boy I've known who's been able to produce a gun brought to Pattaya with them all the way from their home town in Issan where it was bought / rented for something crazy like 5000 baht - which is why I always think twice before unintentionally short changing or pissing anyone off when in Thailand as you're only ever a few thousand baht away from a bullet in the back of the head if you piss off the wrong guy. aussie_ and Phet 2

Are you saying that without the threat of deadly violence you normally don't think twice before short changing or pissing someone off? haha. I joke.. On a more serious note, I was not aware there was a gun crime problem in Thailand. Never thought about it till now. How naive of me.
a447a Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 I would be more worried about knives. One boy in a bar I frequent in Pattaya spent time in prison for stabbing a guy in an argument over a girl. When his brother told me, I was shocked, as he is the nicest guy - especially when I've got my hand wrapped around his substantial asset. After we finish he always gives me a cuddle. Is that a knife in your pocket, or...... It just goes to show that what they say about judging a book by its cover is true. Never trust anyone 100%.
reader Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 I would be more worried about knives. And not without good reason. Many guys appear to have adapted the NRA mantra and believe that the only thing that stops a bad guy with a knife is a good guy with a knife. And everyone believes they're the good guy. It's wise not to anger a Thai, and the younger they are the quicker they are to anger. Just a recent example: From Bangkok Post NARATHIWAT - An 18-year-old youth allegedly caught on camera entering a hospital emergency room and murdering a rival lying helpless in a bed there was taken to the scene for a crime re-enactment on Thursday. Assaree Sae, of Muang district, was taken to Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra Hospital’s emergency room for the crime re-enactment. Assaha Jaelor, 34, was stabbed to death in the room while being treated for injuries on the afternoon of April 28. A police investigation found that Assaree and two accomplices had brawled with the victim and his friends at the provincial Red Cross fair on April 28. Assaha was injured and was taken to the hospital and admitted to the emergency ward. It is alleged that the suspect and one accomplice raided the emergency room where the man was being treated and killed him. The third waited on a motorcycle outside. http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general/1243507/teen-charged-with-slaying-rival-in-hospital-ward
aussie_ Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 On a more serious note, I was not aware there was a gun crime problem in Thailand. Never thought about it till now. How naive of me. An aquintance of mine is now ashes in an urn thanks to a bullit from his bf in Pattaya a while back. Jealousy is an extreme problem in Thailand. My ex stalked me after we broke up and i was scared to even look at another guy when we were together. There is a bar boy in Pattaya who earlier this year put a photo of a gun on his fb when he was having issues with his boyfriend. I am not interested in having a bf in Thailand anymore and happy to enjoy my trips, have some fun and try my best not to upset any of the locals.

Jasper Posted May 4, 2017 Posted May 4, 2017 the Gunpolicy.org website, an online database of global gun statistics run by the University of Sydney’s School of Public Health, believes Thailand has one of the highest gun homicide rates in Asia. It estimates 3.48 murders per 100,000 people in Thailand, three times the rate of neighbouring Cambodia and on a par with the United States. https://coconuts.co/bangkok/news/bullet-and-body-thailands-troubling-gun-murders/
Guest samebb Posted May 5, 2017 Posted May 5, 2017 I am shocked you didn't know. I just never thought about it. Being from the UK, guns are not something we ever think about. I can understand why Americans for example would be more clued up on issues like this. The first time I saw a real gun was when I was 19 and went to Los Angeles. I was terrified.....
gerefan Posted May 5, 2017 Posted May 5, 2017 So how many farang tourists have been shot in Pattaya?? I cant remember many...
Alexx Posted May 6, 2017 Posted May 6, 2017 Most gun violence is between criminal gangs, rivaling college student gangs and shootouts with the police. As a tourist - or in my case, as an expat - there's no reason to be too worried about that. In any case, it's far more likely that the roads will kill you. Or eating som tum. But the occasional stray bullet does hit and sometimes kill innocent bystanders. You have been warned. ChristianPFC 1

Apart from the two Russians on the beach, who were probably up to no good, I can't think of any.

gerefan Posted May 9, 2017 Posted May 9, 2017 Doesnt count, he was a well known British criminal....next?
lilbob69 Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 Doesnt count, he was a well known British criminal....next? Then you should rephrase the question to exclude alleged criminals

Alexx Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 It's mostly rivalries between technical and other vocational colleges, often going on since a long time. Increasingly violent or just more thoroughly reported nowadays? Who knows! In any case, sometimes their confrontations end deadly, either for gang members or bystanders. Some random news reports, you can find many more if you search for "college gangs thailand" or similar: https://www.pri.org/stories/2010-09-18/thailand-tech-school-wars https://coconuts.co/bangkok/news/technical-college-gang-brawl-result-23-arrests-pathumthani/ https://asiancorrespondent.com/2015/07/gang-wars-tackling-thailands-vocational-college-violence/ ChristianPFC and emailbroken 2

ChristianPFC Posted May 12, 2017 Posted May 12, 2017 A new low: Son stabs his father to death with kitchen knife for forgetting to add fish sauce to his pork soup in Thailand http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4479638/Son-stabs-father-forgetting-add-fish-sauce.html But as a tourist or expat, I think Thailand is very safe. (I could add: if someone tries to stab you, just stay an arm's length away from him and you will be safe.)
sglad Posted May 12, 2017 Posted May 12, 2017 (I could add: if someone tries to stab you, just stay an arm's length away from him and you will be safe.) Brilliant.
vinapu Posted May 12, 2017 Posted May 12, 2017 if someone tries to stab you, just stay an arm's length away from him and you will be safe.) I think you should say " arm plus blade length"
steveboy Posted May 13, 2017 Posted May 13, 2017 (I could add: if someone tries to stab you, just stay an arm's length away from him and you will be safe.) You can add a good pair of legs to be able to maintain such distance.
a447a Posted May 13, 2017 Posted May 13, 2017 I think that was just an example of Christian's sense of humour. If not, then he's a bit of a worry! Lol
ChristianPFC Posted May 13, 2017 Posted May 13, 2017 That was a joke, but based on real events. In the wake of During the 2015/2016 New Year's Eve celebrations, there were mass sexual assaults, at least 24 rapes, and numerous thefts in Germany, mainly in Cologne city center. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Year%27s_Eve_sexual_assaults_in_Germany German politicians recommended girls and women should keep an arm's length distance to strangers to avoid being sexually molested or robbed (not a joke!). (Compare India, where the government responded to multiple cases of rape where the victim died with a curfew for girls and women at night - citation neeeded.) After that "eine Armlänge Abstand" (an arm's length distance) has become a symbol how politicians in Germany have lost contact to the people (similar to misattributed to Marie Antoinette “Let them eat cake.”). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Let_them_eat_cake
floridarob Posted July 28, 2017 Posted July 28, 2017 wow, what a thread, lol I feel like I watched a full hr soap opera...not the original story, just the replies. I don't read this board frequently, only when planning a trip to visit.... My take away: Boyfriend in Thailand from a sex worker....doubtful. Long ago, I used to hang out and drink with Hugh Miller (was the manager of Ambiance before opening his own restaurant)...the stories he had were both amusing/sad/depressing. Whenever I hear of tipping or what someone paid for st/lt.... I think of an old boss of mine that said, gotta take the bad with the good, can't win all the time. So whenever we hear of someone that tipped too little, I think of when someone tips too much, does the boy say...oh that's too much and gives some back? Nasty comments should be kept off here unless followed by a smiley face And as for Sambb getting a life....I think he's quite happy with the one he has (again, I hate his politics ) he already knows what it takes many a lifetime to learn......we're here for a short time, tomorrow may never come, enjoy it while you can . I've been paying for sex since I was about 18, in bars like Trix & Stella's in NYC. QUESTION: Which cost more, sex for free or sex for money....Sex for free ALWAYS ends up costing more, emotions, dinners, gifts, time, etc.... kokopelli, vinapu, bobsaigon and 1 other 4
