hmmm, so what makes you think that they DONT carry weapons then eh as it wouldn't be the first bar boy I've known who's been able to produce a gun brought to Pattaya with them all the way from their home town in Issan where it was bought / rented for something crazy like 5000 baht - which is why I always think twice before unintentionally short changing or pissing anyone off when in Thailand as you're only ever a few thousand baht away from a bullet in the back of the head if you piss off the wrong guy.

I would be more worried about knives.

 

One boy in a bar I frequent in Pattaya spent time in prison for stabbing a guy in an argument over a girl. When his brother told me, I was shocked, as he is the nicest guy - especially when I've got my hand wrapped around his substantial asset. After we finish he always gives me a cuddle.

 

Is that a knife in your pocket, or......

 

It just goes to show that what they say about judging a book by its cover is true. Never trust anyone 100%.

And not without good reason.

 

Many guys appear to have adapted the NRA mantra and believe that the only thing that stops a bad guy with a knife is a good guy with a knife. And everyone believes they're the good guy.

 

It's wise not to anger a Thai, and the younger they are the quicker they are to anger.  Just a recent example:

An aquintance of mine is now ashes in an urn thanks to a bullit from his bf in Pattaya a while back. Jealousy is an extreme problem in Thailand. My ex stalked me after we broke up and i was scared to even look at another guy when we were together. There is a bar boy in Pattaya who earlier this year put a photo of a gun on his fb when he was having issues with his boyfriend. I am not interested in having a bf in Thailand anymore and happy to enjoy my trips, have some fun and try my best not to upset any of the locals.

I just never thought about it. Being from the UK, guns are not something we ever think about. I can understand why Americans for example would be more clued up on issues like this.

 

The first time I saw a real gun was when I was 19 and went to Los Angeles. I was terrified.....

Most gun violence is between criminal gangs, rivaling college student gangs and shootouts with the police. As a tourist - or in my case, as an expat - there's no reason to be too worried about that. In any case, it's far more likely that the roads will kill you. Or eating som tum.

 

But the occasional stray bullet does hit and sometimes kill innocent bystanders. You have been warned.

Never heard about the college gang stuff before.  Can you explain?

It's mostly rivalries between technical and other vocational colleges, often going on since a long time. Increasingly violent or just more thoroughly reported nowadays? Who knows! In any case, sometimes their confrontations end deadly, either for gang members or bystanders.

I don't read this board frequently, only when planning a trip to visit....

 

My take away: Boyfriend in Thailand from a sex worker....doubtful. Long ago, I used to hang out and drink with Hugh Miller (was the manager of Ambiance before opening his own restaurant)...the stories he had were both amusing/sad/depressing.

 

Whenever I hear of tipping or what someone paid for st/lt.... I think of an old boss of mine that said, gotta take the bad with the good, can't win all the time. So whenever we hear of someone that tipped too little, I think of when someone tips too much, does the boy say...oh that's too much and gives some back?
