I arrived in Bangkok after a 4 and a half hour flight from Okinawa. Given the tensions in the area I was a bit apprehensive during my stay there , especially as the US has 32 (!) bases on the island. I went to Okinawa just for sightseeing ; I wanted to visit areas associated with WW2 but was very disappointed. First, you need a car to get around but I left my drivers licence at home so had to take bus tours. The only places you can go by bus are the former Naval Officers underground headquarters and the Peace Memorial museum. No other remnants are accessible.

 

We did, however, go up to the observation deck of a building right next to Kadena Army base and watch the planes take off.

 

Everything of cultural significance was destroyed during the war so there's nothing really to see, unless you're interested in castle ruins or the totally reconstructed Shuri Castle in Naha.

 

Naha itself consists of just one main street lined with souvenir shops and expensive steak restaurants, plus three mediocre shopping malls.

 

All in all, it was a bit of a waste of time. I gave the Pineapple Farm, the Butterfly Farm and the Fruit farm a wide berth!

 

So if you want to experience Japan, stick to Tokyo and Kyoto to begin with.

 

And I'd be worried if I lived in Seoul. Way too close to NK for comfort.
