Don't call this a trip report

Good info in this thread. Was thinking of giving Chiang Mai another try for a weekend trip but will probably give it a miss. Are they still enforcing midnight bar closings up there?

Chiang Mai for years has always had the least interesting gay scene of the major places in Thailand and it doesn't sound like it has improved. I have really tried to like CM in the past years but Buck's experience sounds pretty much identical to what I found there.

Looks like I will probably do a couple days at Baan Souy in Pattaya instead. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm told that the 12am closure is being enforced but some bars are dimming the lights, lowering the gates and turning down the music while still serving the customers inside.  I don't know how long that will be allowed to continue.

Personally I like Chiang Mai in the winter season.

The last time we were there was early February 2015 when we combined it with a couple of days up in the mountains in Pai.

While we were in Chiang Mai we enjoyed visiting the Royal Gardens at Rajapruek as the orchids were at their best and Doi Suthep.

We also had a very long day trip out to Chiang Rai and beyond to see The White Temple, The Black House, The Golden Triangle and a Tea Plantation - we went with a gay taxi driver/guide who had a very comfortable large Toyota, it was quite expensive but it was a long and enjoyable day.

I went with my partner and would agree that if I was single and going for some fun I probably wouldn't have Chiang Mai as my first choice but going with my better half I enjoyed the city and it's surroundings.

PS I also enjoyed the Circle Pub with their handsome guys (but for me only for looking)

Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai in such a short time. Why such a hurry?

When I first planned this trip, it was with the idea I would be coming with a friend.  I wanted them to experience the parts of Thailand they have not seen yet.  Also, I wanted to give the areas another try.  At this point I wish I had spent more time in Phuket and less time in Chiang Mai.

I am not much into sight seeing.  I have been to Thailand too many times to count and have never seen the Palace.  I come for the social fun and relaxation.  I don't do much shopping anymore.  Everything they sell here I can get back home at a far cheaper price and my closet can't fit anymore clothes...

But the real reason for this whirlwind is because this may be my last trip to Thailand.  There are other places for me to see.

I agree with traveller123. My boyfriend and I were  in Chiang Mai last week- our fifth visit- and enjoyed every minute of it. Temple visits, the royal gardens, the river...

Of course, the gay scene there is no longer on our minds, though we did have so-so massages in Paradise (a number of cute guys available there, by the way). My first trips were solo , in the late 90s and Adam's Apple was then in its heyday. Barely a seat available....and many of the audience, students from CMU, were as cute as the dancers.

Nowadays what I appreciate about CM, despite its large number of tourists (mainly Chinese- who were 90% of our large hotel) is that it's a Thai city to which tourists are an addition. Without us, there'd be a Chiang Mai. Pattaya, on the other hand , exists only because of the tourists.

Yesterday, a planet romeo friend took me to the Chiang Mai hot springs.  It was about 30 minutes from my hotel (Pj's Place) by car.  It cost me 100 baht for a ticket, my Thai friends ticket was 40 Baht  It was a cute getaway.  If you like you can buy eggs and let the water from the hot springs cook the eggs for you.  You can also soak in the water or swim in the mineral water at an added cost.  The place is a beautiful park and will remind you of Bangkok's Lumpinee park but on a smaller scale.

Last night I made my way back to the night market trying to find other bars using google maps and the Thai Puan guide.  I was not successful and my time was running out if I was going to make it to Adams Apple for show time.  I went back to Secrets bar.  I could not help but think how young the guys looked.  Anyway, the bar seemed a little more busy than yesterday with the guys on one side of the bar, the daily customers on the other side an one big customer having guys walked over to him by his young companion who seem to be set in his role introducing guys of interest to his big farang friend.

I went to catch a tuktuk to Adams apple and the guy demanded 200 baht.  I paid 100 the night before.  The way he demanded the money and our conversation had me frustrated so I stepped back from him and opened Grab app on my phone to get a taxi.  Half-way through the ride the driver forgot to turn on the meter and when we arrived the meter was still on 40 baht.  I gave him 120 for the air conditioned ride and the conversation.

The show at adams apple was very nice and the guys were hot and sexy.  One guy would have been right at home on the cover of a magazine...  Well a few of them would be.  The drink prices were 260 baht for a cold singha and the show started at 10:30.  It was a mix if Erotic and Cabaret.  If you like erections, you will like the erotic portions of the show.  But if you sit in the front or end seats you will need tip money to tip the guys who come into the audience led by their erection.  Oh...  The gogo guys are wearing what I consider Sears white underwear and bare feet; they don't wear numbers but have names tags on the bands of their underwear.

I left there at 11:30 and walked to FreeGuy Bar.  Empty, no show that night and the bar was in Karaoke mode.  I was the only customer and left after a few sips of my beer.

Tonight I think I will try the New My Way?  Maybe I will off a guy? I am still not horny so I may not waste the money.

what's wrong with you, you are not turning straight, are you?

I hope not!  Tonight I plan to off a guy no matter what.  It seems it would be a waste to stay 3 nights in Chiang Mai and not have any sex.

I walked past house of male.  I heard they build a wall around it.  I could not find the entrance and there was no sign so I didn't try to go in.  I would feel bad if I walked into the wrong place and found I was inside someones home haha!

Soon after our fun, he showered and wanted to shower with me but I had to do some work on the computer so we showered separately.

Am I reading it correctly? You went to your computer instead of showering with the guy? I'd never forgive myself.  No wonder they have 60 kinds of ketchup.
