Guest Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 Not every boy in host bars is offable. Scorpion bar in Soi Twilight (mainly Vietnamese) has a particular bad reputation (or is it just my own particular bad memory from around 2014 when I found the boy of my dreams there, to find out that he doesn't go with customers?). (In gogo bars, I always got the boy I wanted.) The Vietnamese in Scorpion seem to be just very attractive bait to get customers in and don't want to go off. Well actually, they would do a very limited range of services for way in excess of the normal rates. I got the impression even that would be reluctantly (ie rather like an attractive sack of spuds). Not only that, they speak hardly any English, so don't make great hosts. I agree gogo boys are always available, in my experience. Quote
Guest ryanasia Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 If the VN boys can get away with that more power to them. Quote
lilbob69 Posted September 24, 2016 Posted September 24, 2016 I've never been to a host bar and indeed have no idea how to spot them. Staying mainly in Pattaya I presume most of the bars in Boystown are host bars? Are there any outside of Boystown that are worth a go? How do you spot a host bar? There is a little bar near Bordeaux Restaurant (near Tukom/Mosaik) which I past a few times, just a couple of pool tables and all Thai guys (none my type so didn't venture in). It was pretty run down and to be honest I thought just a hang out place for locals. Can anyone give more detailed info about the host bars they have been to in Pattaya? Quote
vinapu Posted September 24, 2016 Posted September 24, 2016 So you're chatting up the waiter? That's it? won't take long before he will suggest going with you, main difference between host bar and go-go it that hosts are in street clothes while go-go are almost without ChristianPFC 1 Quote

Oscar's in Boyztown is a host bar, so is Colonial Bar just outside Sunee (are they still open? Haven't been to Pattaya for a year and a lot can change in that time. Colonial was for sale last time I heard and I believe Oscar's had a change in management too). Before I got together with my BF about three years ago, I offed boys from both Oscar's and Colonial. Didn't pay an off-fee, but that's maybe because I took the boys home at closing time. Quote

No that pool/snooker place is not a host bar! Yes there are many host/beer bars outside of Boyztown; Boyztown has the fewest of the three main gay areas in Pattaya. In Pattaya the greatest concentration of host/beer bars is in Jomtien Complex mostly on one soi. Easy to spot, there are lots of boys sitting/standing in front trying to entice you to sit and drink. These places are all open-air with chairs/tables on the street.. Even a blind man could find them or they would find him! Basically they are all the same so best to look for one with the most boys in front for the best selection. In Sunee Plaza there are also a number of host bars. On one Soi there Forester House, Ouds, Ting Tong Red (lots of boys) and Elephant Plaza Hotel Bar. A little further along there is Diamond Bar (few boys but very "friendly") . Across the way is Come In Bar (never had anyone approach me there) . Next to it is Blue Chili which is worth a try. Continuing along there are several more bars to check out. Finally there is Good Boys which is not a host bar in sense you can off them. All the hosting is done inside toward the rear of this establishment. Not as many host bars in Boyztown although Oscars across from Boys,Boys,Boys has many who are available. See website below for maps and descriptions and photos of all these venues. http://www.nickysgaypattaya.com/gay-pattaya/welcome-to-nickys-gay-pattaya/ Happy Hunting. PS- if you ask them to sit and chat then a drink and tip are requisite. About 100 Baht for a drink and same for a tip. lilbob69 1 Quote
lilbob69 Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 Thanks Kokopelli I must admit Jomtien is my least traveled place. I really must make an effort next time to spend some afternoon / evening time there. Quote
kokopelli Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 As for Jomtien and host bars, they don't seem to get active until the evening hours so you may not find anything early on. I did notice some of these bars were opening around 5 pm or so. Others may be able to give more accurate info. There is one bar Bamboo ? which is open in the afternoon as I recall. Quote
Guest ryanasia Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 Bamboo is indeed open in the afternoon. Right next to the 711 on the beach road. Has older, more veteran rough looking types. As far as Classic goes I was there a few days back. No customers and the usual boys around 1 AM. Every time I go into that bar lately I always end up with the feeling this time is my last time. However this time I think it might actually be true. The Mamasans are as horrible as ever and the boys seemed more limited this time but it was also getting late. I guess also because I live here I went once too often and it is always just the same guys. It is low season now so the guys are very persistent and it is hard for me to go in to this area without being pestered by several guys about why I don't answer my phone, or call them or text them etc. I was using Screwboys as an alternative to stay off the soi but now am also having to avoid it because of a clingy guy there. It is the guy I sent to Burma if people remember that. Well as others have said he is back again. lol I knew that was a risk and it is no big deal to me. He just won't be able to ask me for another "get out of jail free card" next time he starts saying he is done with Bangkok. So I ended up in x boys I think it is called. Or whatever the one upstairs of the pool hall is called. There was a reasonable selection of guys in there but only a couple of twinks which are my thing. Had one drink there and went to leave, I was with my partner and we weren't really doing much but looking around anyway. On the way out the Mamasan who we never invited to sit with us or talked to demanded a 100 Baht tip when we were already on the street. I just laughed and said it isn't going to happen. I said we never asked him to sit with us. What is it with Mamasans these days? Am I remembering things wrong but it seemed like years ago some of them were helpful and or even fun to hang out with. They should make them all take apprentice courses and fly them to Japan to show them what mamasans are supposed to do in the future. Next up was Fresh boys, lots of guys and a fucking show. Odd thing about the fucking show was they covered the guys behind a sort of net so you couldn't really see anything. This made it somewhat pointless. Many guys all a little bit muscular but not bodybuilder types just very toned. The only point of interest for me at this bar is the bill came out to 820 for two drinks. No big deal but the extra 20 was cause for a second of amusement. I just looked at it like they built the tip in. Nobody sat with us and normally that is what I would tip for the most basic service anyway. Sometimes it begins to feel as though I am doing the work to entertain the Mamasans and the boys these days. I really am beginning to prefer Pattaya to Bangkok for going out as there is three areas to go to. Anyway that was a bit of a rant but I am getting a little bit tired of being the customer yet being pestered to death around every turn in Twilight. Will probably try to avoid the place until high season comes around and there are more customers to blend in with. Quote

In most of the Pattaya bars, the mamasans leave the customer in peace, particularly if asked. I don't frequent that many of the Bangkok bars, since my visits there are short. However, in recent years, I've only had a real problem at Classic Boys. I go there for the boys, with a mindset ready to send them away as many times as it takes. Japan would be a good place for anyone to learn the art of customer service. Quote
paulsf Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 I'm a fixture in Soi Twilight when I'm in town. I know many of the boys so I don't have the issues many of you seem to have. X-size is above the pool hall and X-Boys is next to Banana Bar. At Fresh Boys you noticed you got many 10 baht coins in your change. It is why they sometimes charge an odd figure for drinks . I asked about it and they said many people don't want coins so the leave them. Really adds up at the end of the night. Quote
Guest ryanasia Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 Well I live here as well and know many of the boys. This seems to be the problem, many of them I wish I did not know or could at times remain more anonymous. Yeah I know, problems us popular guys have. I guess the problem is usually I don't want to guy with that guy again so I find i have to ignore them or make excuses or whatever. It gets to be a little bit too much like actual dating sometimes. I go to hookers to try avoid that sort of nonsense. But some people aren't as sensitive to it, I look at it as sort of the boy not knowing his job and allowing the customer some discretion. As far as the change at Fresh it was given as 20 Baht notes. So they confirmed they just make up the price and randomly leave people coins based on their whim? Stupid policy if that is true you can't just sometimes charge an odd figure. lol Well this is Thailand so maybe you can. I bet 80 Baht per bill can add up by the end of the night. If this is really how they charge it is just another reason not to go there for me. Quote
Brummbaer Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 Many places I've been to seem to hand out part of the change in small bills or coins, whatever the final invoice amount had been. I had managed once to have a bill of an even 500, paid with a 1000 and got back three 100s, two 50s, three 20s and a handful of coins. I've pocketed the coins, as I always seem to need them for public transport, and left two 20s instead. Quote
colmx Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 Myself and BF in classic earlier this month and as per comments above the mamasan was a pain in the ass There were 2 other customers at the time and each of us had a mamasan sitting on our shoulder Our mamasan was spouting away gibberish and after 5-6 mins BF had enough and wanted to leave 700B for drinks, change from 1000B was 3x100B notes Waiter and mamasan stood expectantly waiting for a 100B tip (each)...Luckily BF had 20B and shoved that into tip wallet, mamasan plea for tip was ignored Like others we won't be going back there again soon! My point was that somebody suggested a place changes the prices to get smaller change. I understand the concept of making it easy to tip but changing prices randomly to accomplish this is just bizarre. Maybe next time I will bring my change jar and let them count out 1 Baht coins. Londoner Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 Is The Strangers (Soi 4) a host bar? I've been eating at Balcony for a couple of days and my gaze has continually been drawn to some cute guys working there. I'm much too shy to ask them whether they are available! By the way, the selection of hosts in Soi Twilight is a lot better at the moment than on recent visits...in my opinion. Quote
witty Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 I do carry with me my coin purse, and whenever I find the mamasan particularly annoying, I give her(him) a one baht coin. It I'm tipping the waiter, I leave a 20 baht note. I'll scoop up all the coins to be used later on public transport & small purchases. vinapu 1 Quote
Guest ryanasia Posted September 29, 2016 Posted September 29, 2016 When did it get like this? I don't remember it being a problem in years gone past. Quote
ChristianPFC Posted October 1, 2016 Posted October 1, 2016 In gogo and host bars, I now pay the exact amount, that avoids all waiting for return of change* and counting of change and tip expectations. In 7-Eleven or restaurants, I pay with 1000 Baht notes to get small change. *On Stickman, I read about a mamasan in a girly bar that was famous for just disappearing with the money and hiding for up to half an hour. Especially efficient when the customer has offed a girl and is eager to leave, he would not wait for long for a few 100 Baht change. vinapu 1 Quote

Change counters at BTS stations are good source of change in my hours of need. ChristianPFC 1 Quote

In 7-Eleven or restaurants, I pay with 1000 Baht notes to get small change. Whilst most gogo bars are not too bad, I also like to be armed with sufficient notes to pay the exact amount & leave immediately. That came in handy last year when a boy & waiter arrived uninvited at my table & within 30 seconds the waiter was off to buy a drink that I had refused. Before the waiter returned, the check bin was handed to another waiter with the exact amount for my drink only, as I headed to the door. In the morning, I would typically remove a range of notes from 20~500 baht from the wallet & collect some more small denominations for the wallet in 7-Elevens during the day. In the evening, these all go back in the wallet, along with a couple of thousands. Quote
