Guest Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 In the UK, there is a tendency for new ATM/debit cards to facilitate contact less payment for small transactions. So just hold the card by the reader & payment is made. I never use it, but at least one of my cards has this feature. If this facility is used in Thailand (?) then stolen ATM cards could easily be used for a number of small purchases. There I was thinking ATM cards were safe without a PIN. Shall have to rethink that. Quote

Guest Qualityonly Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 I can take your CC and use Paywave if you have it without a PIn Ladbrokes Card, and others have Paywave no pin needed Travel cards have paywave Quote
Guest Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 I think the profile you are after is atthasit2533. This profile is still up, but the photographs have been removed. Well, if that's the right one, his guestbook is open, if the OP would like to write some comments in there. Now all we need to do is find a picture. Quote

traveller123 Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 If you want to make sure that your Thai debit card can only be used at an ATM with a PIN code but not at a shop without, set the purchase limit to zero, as I've indicated in my previous post. Simple, if you realize there's a problem and if you don't want to use the card for shopping. That's what I do. Alexx, I'm interested in your post as I have a Bkk Bank debit card and I set the transactions to zero but it still allows me to use my card in person in stores without entering a pin. Making the settings zero stops me making payments through internet banking. Quote

Making the settings zero stops me making payments through internet banking. There are different limits for different payment channels. So if you changed the internet banking transaction limit, that is just that. I changed my purchase limit to zero using Bualuang Phone Banking. There's also an option to check your current limit. If you do that and it says zero and you can still make purchases at a shop, then I'd say something went wrong and you probably have no other option than to have them look into it. traveller123 1 Quote
bucknaway Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 I don't know how it is in Thailand but Debit purchases and credit card purchases are looked at differently by the banks here in the USA. If I use my Bank Debit card as a Visa, that purchase is covered by Credit Card banking laws and also comes with Visa protections. If I use that same card as a debit card and enter my pin to make a purchase, I am at the mercy of the bank to protect me against fraud and I have to wait for their decision to refund my money for the fraud or to deny my fraud claim. Alexx Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 There's no protection whatsoever with cards issued in Thailand, both debit and credit, until the time you've notified the bank that your card has been stolen. Banks do sometimes reimburse their customers, in particular in case of skimming devices attached to their ATMs, but you really are at their mercy. Don't take my word for it, by all means, read their terms. So what you do is keeping your limits low and activating SMS notifications for all card transactions. Effectively that limits your potential loss to the daily limit you've set. With debit cards, you also have the option to keep just a small amount in the account they are drawing from and to transfer more from another account as needed. Such transfers are both free and instant within the same bank. Quote
dellboy Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 i use a K-bank atm card, which i thought was safe . is it possible to get the issuing bank branch ( in central festival ) to limit its uses to atm withdrawals only ???? EDIT : this thread has really waken me up , thanks to the OP !! Quote
Guest Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 i use a K-bank atm card, which i thought was safe My K-bank ATM card is for a savings account, so I presume it does not function as a debit card ? I'll have to double check that point. Quote
baobao Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 My K-bank ATM card is for a savings account, so I presume it does not function as a debit card ? I'll have to double check that point. I'd suggest calling your home branch and asking (home branch being where you opened it, and where your signature card is). Some years back I learned from my bank that IF the ATM card has a VISA or M/C logo on it, it's not strictly an ATM debit card. I requested a new card without the VISA connection, and got it. Quote
Alexx Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 Again, all Thai "ATM cards" that have been issued in recent years are Visa, MasterCard or Union Pay debit cards. All of my KBANK cards I've ever had attached to KBANK savings accounts have been Visa debit cards. Do check and adjust your limits, and activate SMS notifications if you haven't done that yet. Quote
traveller123 Posted August 22, 2016 Posted August 22, 2016 and activate SMS notifications if you haven't done that yet. I second Alexxs recommendation on SMS notification. Quote
Guest abang1961 Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 Thanks OP/TS for opening my guards.I'm quite careless as I don't have a habit of keeping my sales receipts. I will from now onwards. Here in Singapore, the bank card I'm holding has multiple functions. It can be used as a debit card (for online purchases and other "physical" purchases at the stores), a card to withdraw cash from the ATM and a transport-related card. I use it more for daily commute on public transport -bus and subway. My name is printed and NOT embossed. With regards to physical purchases, most cashiers don't bother to check the signatures at all. There is always this contactless transaction for purchases below SGD 100 (about USD 70). Quote
zombie Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 OP: Many thanks for your posting. Its a lesson for us all to be extra careful with security etc., especially for ATM/debit cards. Quote
Gaybutton Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 I second Alexxs recommendation on SMS notification. Most Thai banks are now allowing SMS notification and also allowing Email notification. If you have a Thai bank account, but are not always in Thailand, I would make sure to register for Email notification along with SMS notification. And in case you lose your telephone or it is stolen, having Email notification is a good backup. Quote
