Does anyone know why songkran, the Thai new year festival, has now become a gay festival for travelers?

I know why ONE gay traveler likes to come to BKK for Songkran,

It is because so many Asian gay travelers from nearby countries come to BKK for Sonkran to meet other cute Asian gay travelers, and so many local gays are on holiday and can go wild celebrating in the gay places socializing with gay travelers.

Let's say it is a case of positive synergy built up over some years.

It must be good for the Thai economy too,  a win-win situation.

Right, definitely a boost to the tourism business. But for local gay, shouldn't most of them go back to their family for celebration?

Simply put, gays are wealthy enough and what better time to converge in Thailand when you can get "wet" while ogling at the young Asian men.  There is no need for any reason - just enjoy yourself this week.

Songkran seems to have gotten off to a very quiet start here in Pattaya. Mind you, I've only been along Pattaya Sai 2 Street and the area around Tukom, but it's certainly not like I remember it, that's for sure. But it's early days and I'm sure it will pick up as they get closer to the 19th. By then I'll be well and truly out of here.

Which is less than the daily average of 66, according to Wikipedia
