Moses Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 If somebody interesting in history of the web of gay Thaialand you are welcome to read and comment old "Pattaya weekly reports" of Dr.Allen R. Briggs, I do restoration now here: Now restoration of 1999 is going on. Also have been able to restore some photos. At the picture: Loy Kratong celebration at The Icon Boutique Hotel, Pattaya 1999. Comments are welcome here and also at reports pages. 1moRussian, khaolakguy, Alexx and 1 other 4 Quote
TotallyOz Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 Personally, I found his reports amazing. They were great and informative and truly a pioneer in the world of Gay Thailand message boards. I find it equally amazing that someone would revive a dead man's newsletters to profit from their republication. And, I assume without the permission of his heirs. Quote
Popular Post Moses Posted February 14, 2016 Author Popular Post Posted February 14, 2016 You think it is about profit? What profit can I have from that? Also think: pages and site don't exist long time already. If I not do it - then everything will be just lost. I'm searching old files and restore in memory of old days. Do you think it is bad? If I not do it - then everything will be just lost. I'm searching old files and restore in memory of old days. Do you think it is bad? Yes, I do. But, I guess as I considered Allen a friend, I just hated to see someone do that to his information without his consent. Profit? Maybe hyperlinks to your sites? Is that not valuable for you? I counted 4 in the post above. But, I am sure you do all this for free and for fun. I have always been OK with links to other sites. But, I just found this particular post a bit distasteful. Quote
Popular Post forky123 Posted February 14, 2016 Popular Post Posted February 14, 2016 If the information has already been posted in the public domain then I see no harm as long as you properly attribute it which you have. Popular Post Moses Posted February 14, 2016 Author Popular Post Posted February 14, 2016 But, I just found this particular post a bit distasteful. Lets discuss it here. It is important for me. My point of view: I used to read reports in far past and they were useful for me. I never met Mr.Briggs. Less than month ago I become co-partner of Sawatdee Network and found page with history of S.N which is wrote by Surfcrest on server. This page wasn't even visible for visitors, but I found it very interesting. Then I spend about week to recover and restore Rush's blog - Bangkokbois. It wasn't so easy, but I did it and that recovery has been warm welcomed by community. After such warm words I found interesting to recover the oldest mentioned website pattayagay.com. That time I even haven't old database or archive with images to restore history. Instead I'm searching old cashes of searchengines. From many searches sometimes I'm lucky to find html files - old echo of now not existing sites which almost everyone forgot and no one save. I'm wrong in attempts to restore reports? Is it bad to search and restore "old lost scripts"? Should I stop now? Now about links in my "signature" - as I stated already I'm webmaster of this sites and even owner of domain names. But all sites made by me and supported for free. I made sites for my friends for to help them. Every site has phone numbers of boys - just call them or meet them and ask if I got from then even one baht. Sorry for my poor and limited English. Vessey, TMax, kokopelli and 3 others 6 Quote
Moses Posted February 14, 2016 Author Posted February 14, 2016 By the way: at time of my research I found what one of oldest photocollections still exist in web: gents, please welcome albums with great pictures from Phuket Gay Festivales 1999 and 2000 Special note: I have any connection with this site, just found it cuz it has been mentioned in one of Mr.Briggs reports. Alexx Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 I never read and wasn't even aware of that stuff and I'm glad that someone brings it back online. If the heirs object, let them do the complaining. If they won't, why should anyone else? KhorTose, vinapu, TMax and 1 other 4 Quote

Moses Posted February 14, 2016 Author Posted February 14, 2016 Side effect of my researches . I'm sure some faces are well known in community. I feel free to post pics here cuz they already have been published in past. 2003, Loy Kratong in cummunity: Diva's show, 2003 (2004?) Popular Post Bob Posted February 15, 2016 Popular Post Posted February 15, 2016 Allen himself and his website were helpful to many, myself included. I didn't know Allen well but always found him to be the perfect gentleman. Unless Allen somehow copyrighted what was published online, I don't see any problem with anybody using it for any purpose, especially given the attribution has been given. forky123, TMax, llz and 5 others 8 Quote
Popular Post vinapu Posted February 15, 2016 Popular Post Posted February 15, 2016 I find it equally amazing that someone would revive a dead man's newsletters to profit from their republication. And, I assume without the permission of his heirs. Are we even sure Mr.Allen would wish anybody to contact his family in respect of what he was publishing about gay life? Moses is only restoring what was already published and I think it's great idea to salvage those materials at least for those who are nostalgic how great gay Pattaya was and how it become only shade of former itself now. The same goes with bangkokbois blog. Too bad nobody saved somewhere Shamelessmac's surveys of massage parlors , or may be somebody did? As for profit motive which I doubt it exists - aren't we all profiting for good works our dear deceased did during their lifetime ?. So I'd say , Moses go ahead and just do it if you have time and energy. Moses, Vessey, llz and 5 others 8 Quote
Popular Post Gaybutton Posted February 15, 2016 Popular Post Posted February 15, 2016 Allen and I were close friends. Knowing him as I did, I think he would be quite pleased to see interest in his board still exists more than a decade later. He certainly never gave any indication that he would want his board and his efforts to eventually vanish from memory. I'm happy to see what Moses is doing and I believe Allen would be even happier. I see nothing inappropriate about it at all. DivineMadman, vinapu, forky123 and 9 others 12 Quote

TotallyOz Posted February 15, 2016 Posted February 15, 2016 Wow. It is so nice to see so many people log in to "like" other posts. I'll have to be bluntly honest more often. While I am in the minority, I do believe that if you owe a site you own the rights to the content forever and for someone to dig up old stuff to post is wrong. That said, since GayButton and Surfcrest are OK with it, I have started backing up their sites just in case they pass gently into the good night and that way, we will be able to save all those conversations forever. (just kidding guys, I would never do that) vinapu 1 Quote

For now only his google-map is online: there are places and his comments about each place. shm.jpg thank you, out of sheer nostalgia I looked through the map and comments but now it has only archival value, lots of places closed or like Albury, changed locations and closed, may places currently open not even shown or mentioned. So definitely it's better to use forum like this for up to date information and hope Shameless Mack is happy wherever he is now Moses 1 Quote

Moses Posted February 15, 2016 Author Posted February 15, 2016 Michael, thank you for answer. What do you think as friend of Mr.Briggs: he wrote reports for profit or for people? Will be he happy to know what after been lost his reports are restored and again have readers? Also please visit pages and tell me: is this restoration with respect and in memory of Mr.Briggs? What are you opinions: what I can do more to express my respect to Mr.Briggs? Seriously. you knew him, I never met. So tell me what I can do for him for to pay his works more, what can be done better? Quote

But, look, your sites are not for free either. Yes, they are free to look at. But, they are selling services and other things and thus for profit. You may not make cash off of them, but your intent is for others to make cash. Your new site SGT is not a profile making site but it has been sold for thousands of dollars in the past in order to make a profit for someone. Your new partnership may enhance their ability to make a profile. Great. I applaud that. I have no problem with capitalism, socialism or communism. Mr. Briggs had a boyfriend who ran a local restaurant. I think a good gesture for his memory would be just giving him 20,000 baht. I know that would make Mr. Briggs happy! Quote
