Members Novarunner Posted January 30, 2016 Members Posted January 30, 2016 I've been taking PrEP for the past 4 months and will be making a trip to Bangkok in March. I'm not interested in sharing this information with every boy I meet but would like to share it with two that i have seen multiple times on past trips. I am worried though about scaring them away and/or that they will have no idea what I am talking about. Does any one out there have any experience communicating something like this to a boy they have met? How did it go? Quote
ct2005 Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 It seems Thailand has the option for PrEP pills for 30 baht per day http://www.hivnat.org/en/news/45 I wonder how many gogo boys or those in the sex industry are actually taking it. Quote
kokopelli Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 Why would you want to share this info? You are protecting yourself unless, that is, you want to bareback them? Quote
Guest Hutchison Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 For those seeking PrEP or PEP in Bangkok, try here: www.sathornclinic.com/about-us A private clinic meeting the needs of all gay men and travellers run by a personable young gay man (he's on gay romeo) and also specialising in travel medicine. Good to know , thank you . I saved the link just in case of need for tests or vaccines. I wonder , what the hell doctor is doing on gay romeo but I digress. Quote
DivineMadman Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 PreP and related testing/counseling are also available at the Thai Red Cross TMax 1 Quote
anddy Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 to add to the health links: another place to get tested is Silom Community Clinic http://www.silomclinic.in.th/ The name is misleading now, because it is no longer located in Silom (used to be in the Bangkok Christian Hospital on Silom before), but understandably they retained the name after moving. You are protecting yourself unless, that is, you want to bareback them? ^^^ This - and if so I'm sure you're already fully aware that PREP does not protect you ( or the boy ) from the myriad of other STI's that are continuously running rampant in Thailand, which begs the question why then would you want to even dream of wanting to run that risk that I wonder ( assuming that IS of course your reason for wishing to share that information with a boy?) Guest Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 I wonder , what the hell doctor is doing on gay romeo but I digress. I think the answer to the question is because that's where the men are..... I am surprised to see that question on this forum, but have much more important items to discuss: As for this PrEP idea, for anyone who uses condoms, which I shall presume is most of us, how would you evaluate the risk of infection against the possible side effects from long term use ? I had never heard of PrEP before reading this thread. Quote
vinapu Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 I think the answer to the question is because that's where the men are..... now you made me feeling stupid and rightly so, LOL Quote
DivineMadman Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 I've spent 40 minutes trying to write a halfway decent note on this topic. I don't want to be preachy. I apologize. Personally, I fear that a side effect of PrEP is that it enables condom-less sex, which creates exposure to syphilis, the heps and other STDs that are rampant in BKK and around the world. I also believe that we have a duty of care towards our sexual partners, many of whom in Thailand are younger perhaps naive perhaps not aware of the risks perhaps haven't experienced the losses that we have, so I believe that we should practice and encourage the practicing of safe[r] sex. Also I have on more than one occasion had a boy desire to be barebacked because (I believe) he thought that was what I wanted and he wanted me as a partner/regular customer, which makes me think his decision not the best-informed one. Based on my personal experience with parents over-prescribed with drugs in the american fashion, I believe that doctors don't really know the long-term side-effects of many drugs, and that is certainly true of Truvada/PrEP. PrEP is great for those in the business, for those with a partner who has HIV and thus face regular exposure, and for those for whom condom use (self or partner) is a problem. PrEP is not a condom replacement because it is not foolproof and because there are so many other rampant STD's out there that make condom use still advisable unless you are in a committed safe monogamous relationship. There is a great organization called SWING active in Soi Twilight and Pattaya that provides testing and sexual health counseling among other things, but not all of the boys take advantage. Indeed, many boys who have sex with customers for money will insist that they are not money boys. Off my soapbox. Open the box of wine...... Sorry again Cheers vinapu, kokopelli and TMax 3 Quote
firecat69 Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Nothing wrong with reminding everyone. But you are probably preaching to the choir If as you say std's are rampant and I certainly would not believe anything the Thai government says , I still doubt you will find a majority that use condoms for Oral Sex ( I could be wrong?). Most know that most STD's can be taken care of with various drugs and Thai Hospitals , Doctors etc heavily prescribe drugs . HIV of course is different with no cure and only a Condom is largely effective against transmission. The rise of STD's are certainly not limited to Thailand or Asian Countries. It is reported to be increasing all over the world. Alcohol of course contributes to at least some of the unsafe sex just as it contributes to Drunk Driving. But reminding people may help someone who is about to get careless> TMax and vinapu 2 Quote
Guest ronnie4you Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 I think that using Prep instead of a condom will only lead to bigger problems down the line. Nonetheless, it does appear to be better if you would bareback despite the risks. Oral sex without a condom is so much safer than anal sex without a condom. Quote
TMax Posted February 6, 2016 Posted February 6, 2016 I would only use PrEP as an added precaution and more for the short term not taking long term, never know when one of those condoms will fail Quote
Alexx Posted February 7, 2016 Posted February 7, 2016 I think PrEP mostly makes sense for those who are prone to being forced or coerced into unprotected sex (e.g. sex workers), those who are in a relationship with someone who is HIV positive and those who go on a sex binge. In all these cases, ideally as an additional layer of protection, of course they should still use condoms if and whenever possible. Personally, I wouldn't like the idea to take such a potent antiviral drug over a long period of time unless I really had to. But that's just me, I try to minimize the number of pills I pop in general. I've survived living in Bangkok for 10 years without catching anything major, so I consider my safe sex practices sufficient. Quote
