DID HE REALLY SAY THAT?!?!!!

In my experience no, it's the exact opposite - a Thai guy can call you old, ugly, fat or worse, you name it, no problem, it's just "cultural" - but just you go and try calling HIM even just one of those things and watch the major huffy fit and drama act that ensues thereafter.  He'll instantly starting moaning and complaining and asking "why you say that about me !" and setting out to get you back later, preferably in front of other people just so "save face".

So no, in my experience they can give it ( oh it's just cultural, I no mean bad to you) but they sure as hell can't take it ( why you say that to me, fuck you, farang you can fuck off, I not need you, many farang in Thailand better than you, you OLD, FUCK YOU"  - and that could be over something like "hmmm those shoes you're wearing tonight don't seem go with those trousers very well are you sure you want to wear those when we go to the nice restaurant ??) !!

Or maybe I just always find the drama queens :-)   - ( and if so fuck them as I can out drama queen the lot of them too when it suits with a highly offended, ok, I think better you go find new farang, you not good for me........and count the seconds until the "No, but I want YOUUUUUUU" kick in as he sees his rent money rapidly disappearing before his very eyes ;-)

Or perhaps the farang knows the young thai friend is married with 2 kids.

Yess!!  This happened to a neighbour of mine (whom I shall call "Bob")  when I lived in the Dark Side.  Their first year together was normal and all lovey-dovey.  Then Bob's young Thai bf (well not so young, around 27 then)  started losing mobile phones, claimed his motorbike was stolen, this went missing, that went missing, etc.  He was selling them for extra cash to give his girlfriend.  This was in addition to the 15,000 Baht a month Bob was giving him.  Everyone in our street knew about the girlfriend but Bob was oblivious or maybe he chose not to "see" it.  Then one morning he came home from a trip earlier than expected and found his Thai boyfriend and his girlfriend passed out drunk and naked in his (Bob's) bed!!  A big fight ensued and the Thai bf promised to break up with his gf blah, blah blah.  Of course he didn't.  Well to cut a long story short, two years later, the Thai bf brought home his gf who was 7-months pregnant - and she moved in with her bf and Bob.  Bob simply did not have the will or resolve to fight them.  He had become too emotionally dependent on his Thai bf.  The Thai bf has now had three kids with his Thai gf, and her mother and brother had also moved in with them.  Bob supports all of them.  I last saw Bob this past January and he was a shadow of his old self.  Really meek and withdrawn-looking.  Told me he had finished all his savings and if not for his pension, would be living on the streets.  He said he was tired of all the fighting - no, not between him and his Thai bf - but between the Thai bf and his wife/gf because the  Thai bf now had a kik! Poor Bob.  I always thought he was a weakling and a loser but I didn't realise just how weak he was. Sigh...

It's about renting their company by the hour or day. We're picking the cutest among them to spend sexy time with guys up to 3 or 4 times their age and weight. Of course they don't think we are beautiful, we obviously don't find guys our age beautiful or we'd be jumping each other's bones instead of theirs. I'm fairly amazed so many get so wound up about what these guys say. Get over it and, if they can fake they are enjoying it when they are having sex with you, forgive that they can't always keep the mask up when talking with others.

I like your kind reasoning of a non-condemning explanation of why Thais may appear to some as being tactless.  After all, they are smart people, and they would not speak in a way that they themselves perceive as ugly. Since this happens in their country, they have the right to be judged by their standards.

because i am asian too. i can only imagine if a foreigner comes to my country and talks to local people.  that is why when i was in thailand, i try not to take their words literally. i take it as a whole sentence than the word used.
