In camfrog, if someone likes the song that is currently playing, he writes 88888888888888. (I asked several people why it is 8, nobody could explain. Whereas 555 hahaha is well known.)

You will be even more shocked to learn that concentration camps were invented by the British during the Second Boer War 1899-1902. The British Empire led a war of conquest against the Boer republics (descendents of Dutch settlers in South Africa) to gain access to the gold and diamond under their (the Boer's) soil and to get a colonial empire from Kap to Kairo. If you attend a grammar school in Germany, two foreign languages are compulsory: English and French/Russian/Spanish/Latin/others. After leaving school, however, most people quickly forget the second foreign language and maintain only a basic level of English. From my own observations, I estimate it took me between 10,000 and 20,000 hours to reach my current level of fluency in English (this time includes watching TV and reading books in English).

Thai boys and money (I was looking for a post by fountainhall about a Thai friend who disappeared after borrowing a negligable (by European standards) amount of money. Where is that post? Here a similar story.) In December 2011, I met a student a few times and he asked for reasonable amounts of money (e.g. 500 THB for taxi, 500 THB for registering at the university) most times. There were problems with setting up a date (it always took several calls and confusion with time of departure and time of arrival), but he is cute and the sex was good. His English is limited, so we have to speak (and write) in Thai which is an added bonus. We met a few times in December, he assured me that he does not intend to borrow a total of more than 2,000 Baht and that he would pay back in January, after receiving payment for December for his part-time job. I know that borrowed money is highly unlikely to be returned, so I consider it a gift and don’t talk about it. Over New Year’s Eve, I stay in Pattaya and in January, back in Bangkok, I call him to meet again. He does not come and two hours after our appointment I can finally reach him on the phone: he cannot come. I know that such behaviour is absolutely acceptable by Thai standards, that’s why I always have an alternative plan for the evening. Before leaving Thailand, I try to call him again to say goodbye: no connection under this number. The same from Europe, so I assume he changed his phone number. All information I have is his nickname, home province, age, student at Ramkhamhaeng, camfrog profile (which doesn’t exist as I found out now), email (for facebook and MSN, but the email doesn’t work). Do you think he changed phone number because he doesn’t want me to contact him any more because he cannot pay the money back? In 2010, I was staying with a Thai friend (waiter in gay bar in Silom area) for a week while I was looking for accomodation for 3 months in Bangkok. Valuable insight into the lifestyle. As he works at night, he gets up about 4 pm and to bed starting from 2 am. I cannot sleep if a fan or a TV or anything else that makes noise, light or wind is on. I still fail to see the purpose of checking facebook on the mobile phone in the early morning. But back to the subject. It was the begin of the month, and a few days after I moved in the electricity was cut because he didn’t pay the rent. As the bathroom had no window, we used it with candles, but for shaving I went to the elevator, because the elevator has a mirror and light. With hindsight, I think he wanted me to pay the rent. But at that time, I didn’t see any connection between my presence and the rent. Anyway, he has a Farang boyfriend who sends money, which allows him to rent a room he couldn’t afford from his job. To tell the truth, it was nicer without electricity: no TV, no fan, no aircon. After a few days, he payed the rent and asked me for 500 Baht (that’s the fee for late payment), which I gave him. Then I moved into my own room in the same building. And nother story from January 2012: Some boys rent rooms by the day, which is more expensive than renting by the month. Last month, I had the chance to investigate this further. On the way to my hotel, I was approached by a gay Thai who had an interest in me. He invited me to his room, which was very close to my hotel. I had no sexual interest in him, but I never miss chance to see how people live. The room was pretty small, let’s say 15 sqm, no aircon, bathroom on the floor shared with others. For this he paid 200 Baht per day, which makes about 6,000 Baht per month. On leaving, my was crossed with a Farang aquaintance who lives there under the same conditions! For just 1000 Baht more he can get a serviced apartment with full furniture just around the corner! A year ago, I had a room 200 meters away. My room was about 30 sqm, had aircon and a bathroom and I paid 4,000 Baht per month. So my room was larger, nicer and cheaper. But there is a hook: a deposit of 8,000 Baht was required. So in conclusion, some of these boys manage to pay 200 Baht per day, but are unable to cough up a monthly rent of 4,000 Baht, leave alone a deposit of 8,000 Baht!

As far as I can judge, Balcony/Telephone/Dick's are not prepared for offing, it's like going to 7-11 and ask a staff if he wants to come and what the off-fee is. It could even be considered an insult. But I never tried, however I met one waiter from Telephone and one from Balcony after work for free. And I still have a little crush on one very cute waiter in Balcony, but he isn't interested. Most of the beer bars on Soi Twilight are host bars, I think only Dick's Cafe and (others where the waiters wear uniform, I don't remember the name) are not for offing, at least not as a standard procedure. I recall two offs from host bars in Pattaya, off fee and tip were comparable to gogo bars.

(Edit: I am still that naive to beliefe that there is a law, it will be followed.) When it was under construction, you couldn't pass from Babylon to Suan Phlu, now you can, but there are gates, and they might close them during nighttime. On a recent holiday I walked from Suan Phlu to Si Bam Phen with a friend, and the gates were open (for people, but not wide enough for cars). If they had been closed, we would have had to take a large detour or even better a taxi.

I book my flights 2 or 3 months in advance, that excludes last minute deals. Next time, I will check on the airline's hompages for prices (after finding a suitable flight on a travel webpage).

The additional charges were similar for the following sites I tried: opodo, govoyages, edreams and bravofly. Bravofly deserves mentioning as is has an overview of prices up to +- 3 days from the main date. This gives a grid of 49 different choises for day of departure and return, the lowest price for that combination shown in the grid. That fulfils my needs, as I have usually a flexibility of one week for my flight dates.

It saves a lot of work (I would not want to wast my time by saving websites manually), you just start it and some hours later (depending on how large the website is), you have complete copy. You can browse the copy like you browse the original webpage, only in the address line you will see that it's from your harddrive and an added bonus is that most adverts are just white area. I now do so with every website I like. As shamelessmack showed, every website on the internet can disappear at any time. Bangkokbois changed the style of his blog some months ago. Before, I had to increase font size (Ctrl + "+", works in any website) to read it. (To avoid any confusion: My name is Christian, that one is Chris, a different person.) Yesterday, I wanted to book a flight in Europe (Paris-Berlin and back), and was surprised how the price grew from 78 E (displayed on the search) to 92 E (with emission charge), and then they wanted to add another 16 E for payment by credit card (to make a total of 108 E), I abandoned the website to sleep over the matter. It helped: I went to the airline's homepage (easyjet), where I got the flight for a total price of 81 E : no emission charge, no other various taxes and most important no charge for paying by vire transfer (credit card payment costs 6 E or 2,5% whichever is greater).

I read(present)/read(past) those that publish daily (bangkokbois, gayboythailand) daily, others that do not publish daily (baobao, shamelessmack, ricequeendiary, simonlover), I check two or three times per week. Bangkokbois is polarising, to put it charitably. The discontinuation of gayboythailand was announced, so I made a copy of the entire blog (I found a programm on the internet that dos it for you). However, the discontinuation of shamelessmack was completely unexpected, so I only have a few printouts of maps. Fortunately, ricequeendiary is still online (nonetheless, I made a copy of the complete blog).

Although my exposure to porn is very limited, this is good news to me. If people watch porn without (the actors wearing) condoms, they think it's okay not to use condoms for sex.

They have discounts for books as well. Everything at the Asia books I went to seems to be discounted at 20%.

I used Oman twice so far (from London to Bkk and from Paris to Bkk), both economy class. Stops in Muscat were about 3 hours. Times of departure were ok (I like to fly over night, even though I can't really sleep in these chairs), and prices were significantly (more than 20%) lower than direct flights.

A few days ago, I met a Thai friend at Balcony (the part that is opposite For Fun - two House drinks for 99 Baht) and even there the music was too loud to have a conversation without shouting and repeating. That was around 11 pm. Earlier in the evening, 6 to 7 pm, the music/noise level is ok. I will reduce my visits to Soi 4 to one or two per holiday. In a gogo bar, I can use (and I do use) earplugs, but for drinking and chatting I will go somewhere else.

Gaybutton's list is a must-read for every bar owner! For me, dancing is not that important. It's a nice addition, but not absolutetely necessary. For dancing, I can go to a ballet. For me it's fine if the boys wear whichever underwear or swimmwear they want. I actually prefer it to underwear given out by the bar. The boy's taste in undwear is more like my taste in underwear than what the bar owners give them.
