What is "travel insurance"? The kind of insurance that helps you when your flight is delayed or cancelled luggage lost? I never took these, and saved a lot of money! Not something the government should interfere (apart from prosecuting those who use the service and don't pay, if necessary in their home country). All my minor health problems I got treated in Thailand, I paid in cash after the treatment. I assume for more expensive treatments, the hospital will ask for coverage first? Anyway, if a tourist gets injured, the person who caused the injury should pay for the treatment. Most probably it's a Thai, so they should force their citizen to have an insurance! Like popular subjects on the forums, this insurance is one that comes up every now and then, to be quickly forgotten.

One could say I'm too lazy to eat. Most other activities are more interesting than eating, so I postpone eating until I feel hungry. I would rather put my finger into a power to recharge my energy instead of eating. When I travel, I have to make the most out of daylight. By getting up at 9 and leaving at 10 (after breakfast), I lose 4 hours already, so I might only have a snack during day not to waste time eating, and wait for nightfall for my second meal of the day (after breakfast). When traveling with friends, eating is always a contentious point. I can eat anywhere, anytime, almost anything, whereas my friends are picky (especially concerned about cleanliness of the place).

Probably referring to Sukhumvit Soi 26-38, Rama IV end? After such a heavy rain with poor draining, it's interesting to see how uneven the roads are, and where there are low points. This could even be something to consider when choosing a place to live: look for signs of flooding (like an elevated walkway built by locals to get across large puddles) - a friend complains about soi dogs in front of his place, he doesn't like going out or coming back in darkness for fear of being bitten. I observed the draining being cleaned (ususally by prisoners - their shirts or the car has the name of the prison on it), there is a lot of garbage and sand partially blocking the drains.

So basically, my nutritional status vacillates between hungry - not hungry. (Ten years ago, I had a friend who used to open the top button of his pants and hyperventilate after meals.)

You are a patient man. Thailand is a different game than the US or Western Europe. Read my blog for some stories. However, if the boy speaks English, that's a good start (part of the reason for my poor success is that I speak Thai and have access to all village idiots).

No thanks. I can see fully dressed, or some shirtless, elsewhere for free. I should go to the Bangkok bars more (or rather: go there at all) to see who is in the trade. Yesterday I saw a boy whom I would take for free in a sauna, and then learnt from a friend that that boy is money boy and would be available for 4000 Baht (sic!). For the tourist, a tuk-tuk ride will cost at least twice of a taxi. Some people might find riding a tuk-tuk fun, I don't and haven't for years. Sometimes for fun I silently observe tourists negotiating with tuk-tuk drivers in tourist places, and inwardly cry "Get a taxi!".

And a reminder that Malaysia hotel has minimum age for joiners 20 years (just the hotel's policies, not the law) and even I have to leave my ID at reception when I visit friends who stay there.

What are your interests? If you want sex, go to Pattaya. If you want beach, go to Phuket. If you want temples, go to Chiang Mai. (But CM and Phuket are unsuitable for daytrip for distance from Bangkok, and in Pattaya venues that sell sex open at night, so you would want to stay over night.)

Sanam Luang is the name. "Thai masters" an oxymoron? When the Thai do something new that involves engineering or science, there is a good chance it goes wrong (the statues of the Thai kings in Hua Hin or the giant standing Ganesha in Chachoengsao, both had to be put into scaffolding for renovation because there was structural damage shortly after opening). This is a pyre, so everything will be burned in the end. In this case, an ample amount of duct-tape can be used to hold everything together until the main event.

In my experience, there are few Thais (and other SEA) who enjoy traveling the way I do. You can probably find someone to accompany you to a prestigious place (Phuket, Hua Hin, Chiang Mai), but for off-the beaten track, probably little interest. And those few I met who showed an interest, it's rather "Can I go with you?" than "I can show you around!". By now, my knowledge of Thailand is vastly superior to most Thais I have met. But the average tourist might with some luck find a boy who can organize a trip. But keep in mind that most Thais don't like walking, whereas for me everything under 5 km is walking distance. Meet the family ("poverty porn") in the boy's hometown is mildly entertaining once, utterly boring every further time to me. After mostly so-so or poor experiences with Thai boys, I wouldn't want to depend on someone in another country (where I don't speak the language). How did you (numazu and BurBoy) arrange that trip to Burma, I mean in particular getting time off work and making a plan where to go? I have several Burmese and Lao friends, but I don't know if any of them would be interested, able and could get time off work.
