I don't want to believe you Michael, but likely you are right! I recall Breaking Bad which I loved and recommended to a friend who poo-pooed it at first but then fell in love with it. So who knows! 20 Baht does sound low however not necessarily. The routine, for regular customers, is the boyz will approach them, one by one, and display their merchandise for inspection and receive 20 Baht or more. The customer may drop 200 Baht every time he enters the club. And, in addition, the customer often has one or two boyz sit with him which cost him two drinks plus 100 Baht tip each (min). So an hour of fun can easily cost the customer 600+ Baht plus cost of his own drinks. And this goes on night after night. And then there are the farang who just sit on their hands and watch and give nothing.

Interestingly a gay sauna would be the last place I would enter if no previous experience with gay sex. Those places give me the creeps as so many of the customers are creepy.

Where will you go in Thailand? Pattaya is easier and cheaper to get around and experience both go go bars and massage houses then Bangkok, at least in my opinion. Just tip them 100 to 200 Baht when sitting with you (you do this when you pay for your drink and ready to leave). If they like you they will ask you to take them off! Other posters can advise you of how much to tip them for their services if they do go with you for some action (you pay this tip when the action is completed and you are no longer a virgin).

Yes, frugality can become an addiction. I know one chap who can get (almost) free flights as far as Tokyo due to having a friend who is an ex airline employee. This chap could upgrade to Biz Class for an extra small amount but doesn't. Also know gay guys in Thailand who wont go to go-go bars just to avoid buying a drink or dropping 20 Baht tip. For me, the comfort of Biz Class is worth it although I don't pay with cash, only with miles. PS- how did this topic get so far off track?
