Streaming suggestions thread...
Pete1111 replied to JKane's topic in Theater, Movies, Art and Literature
Operation Hyacinth , a crime thriller on Netflix. There are plot twists and more. A very good movie out of Poland. Don't watch the trailers. They all stink IMO, and also spoil too much. It is not a "gay movie" per se, but there is gay subject matter. -
Would love to hear Patrick Stewart read that poem. ❤️

Casting a woman as James Bond seems like a stretch to me. 😉 Matt Bomer could do fine in that role. But I doubt the Bond brand would pick an out gay actor.

What 3 Words would you say to your 18 year old self?
Pete1111 replied to TotallyOz's topic in The Beer Bar
I knew for sure before 18 that I liked guys. It frightened me a lot. So, at 18, I would tell myself something along the lines of It Gets Better. I came out to my family in my mid 20s and joined a gay group at work. Then I volunteered to take part in a newspaper interview that sampled several companies in the city, what it is like to be gay in corporate America. It was one of those things where I look back and go "what was I thinking?" 🤣 But before that, I had a really hard time dealing with internalized homophobia and the fear of admitting I was gay. It really affected me. So i would try to tell myself to that yes, it does get better, and to try changing my outlook on things. -
In two weeks, the sequel to Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe will release. I ordered my copy from my local independent bookstore. I am especially excited because the audiobook will once again be read by Lin-Manuel Miranda. He did a terrific job (of course) reading the first book, a truly poignant, enlightening tale about two Mexican American boys in El Paso. Some call it a love story for young adults, but it is so much more.

Ah, good point, JKane. I'll put Dune in my reading queue. That has been true for me with a recent LGBTQ movie that people were wild about. I already loved the book. But the movie was a "miss" for me.

@JKane, How fortunate you connected with that book club. The Internet knew to find you! I'm glad you commented on the book. I definitely wanted to know if you'd recommend reading it. Thank you!

I watch reruns of Love Boat and am always amazed how many old stars they scooped up to come aboard!

Afghanistan - Yet Another US Mistake Is Now Happening!
Pete1111 replied to PeterRS's topic in The Beer Bar
I'm not as well read on Afghanistan as some of you but the thread omits the CIA went in to lay the groundwork for getting Bin Laden. But the US missed getting him there. What we know for sure is years later the CIA figured out where Bin Laden might be, and President Obama ultimately agreed to attack. Two Black Hawk choppers flew from Afghanistan into Pakistan and got Bin Laden. To me, it seemed the original mission was then achieved. But the mission morphed into other causes, perhaps based on unfounded information. Troops on the ground in Afghanistan originally suggested seeing no clear reason to be there. After 20 years, I expect most of us agree. Man's inhumanity to man will continue around the world. Innocent people will suffer. But our role in Afghanistan is over, or should be soon. -
..or have that many scenes when The Boy Wonder was found tied up with rope, Batman to the rescue.

The Trump backed candidate lost to the alternate GOP candidate tonight in a Texas special election for a vacant House seat, a black eye for Trump. Another test case for Trump's influence is coming up next week in Ohio, where Trump is backing a candidate in another special election for a vacant House seat.

The Good Lord Bird on Showtime
Pete1111 replied to Pete1111's topic in Theater, Movies, Art and Literature
Received no Emmy nominations (and Bridgerton got 12????). For me The Good Lord Bird was MUST SEE television. Showtime just ran it again. $%&@ the Emmy's. Vulture ran a great opinion piece on this. -
LGBT movie becomes hit in Japan

I loved the grandmother character. I can see why the film has caught on. The conflict the son has to deal with hits home. -
What platform is streaming "Manner of Death"? I am in the US. Maybe not here.

My co-worker tells me I should watch it because of how much I liked Big Little Lies. Need to find time.

Maurice by E.M. Forster
Pete1111 replied to TotallyOz's topic in Theater, Movies, Art and Literature
I did not realize Rupert Graves had discussed having M/M relationships, or, as it was called in Maurice, "the unspeakable vice of the Greeks" Interesting! I love in Room with a View how his character, the young and pretty Freddy Honeychurch, was absolutely smitten with George Emerson and convinces to join with Mr. Beebe, go for a bathe where they have a naked romp in the pond. James Ivory said that good looking actors only make a film better. I expect it was his direction to have the handsome Graves naked in both films. He was so sweet and natural in both love scenes in Maurice. The full frontal must be why the R rating. Worth it I must say. <3 -
I'll like when he's doing time.

Trump reports he'll return to the Presidency during August. Hmmm.......doubt it.
