However it is true that many people still prefer to declare them as pardo/brown instead of black, since sadly there is still this stigma. But going back to the question of prejudice - since from colonial times it has more to do with the social level than just with color itself (maybe a combination of both), for example a slave could buy his/her own freedom (alforria) - if able to save some money - and many slaves did that, so they were living normally as any other citizen. Of course they had some hard times, but since they had money they were accepted by the society.
