Ordinarily I'd assume it was for the publicity but a broken back is rough. But still, lots of publicity.

Survivors mark 75th anniversary of world’s 1st atomic attack
tassojunior replied to TotallyOz's topic in The Beer Bar
I've only been to the Arizona memorial once but when we went we seemed to be the only non-Japanese in about 200 people. You know the majority of tourists to Hawaii are always Japanese and almost half the population of Hawaii is Japanese-American. I googled and the site intentionally does not keep records of the nationality of visitors and tour guides there have said about half are Japanese tourists. WW2 is viewed differently by the Japanese tourists as is Pearl Harbor and it's a little weird being at the Arizona memorial with them. https://www.nytimes.com/1985/12/07/world/for-most-japanese-pearl-harbor-is-just-a-footnote.html#:~:text=George%20Hogan%2C%20a%20tour%20guide,nation's%20ambivalence%20about%20the%20war. -
Brazil reopened to tourists

There's also a possibility of viral load differences mattering both for illness and maybe even immunity. And tests are ultra unreliable still. -

Ever notice that 99% of the visitors to see the sunken Arizona at Pearl Harbor are Japanese ? Also "different". DC Admirals' celebration of the bombing with special cake trucked in from St. Louis. Copies of the cake were sold all over the US. A new two-piece swimsuit was named after Bikini Atoll. Miss A Bomb 1946 -

Yea but "our guys" aren't in the herd. If anyone is going to catch it they are. They often are in the most, most, most susceptible crowd for contagion. ( excepting my absolutely perfect Bel Ami friends of course). -
Weber always went to the Iowa Boy's State High School Wresting championships to get his beefy models.

Bruce Weber would do it better.

UW now forecasting 300,000 dead by Dec 1. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-usa/university-of-washington-forecasts-300000-u-s-covid-19-deaths-idUSKCN2521VR In fairness, Europe has re-opened all schools and very, very young children don't seem to catch or spread the virus much. Class size is lower in Europe. /https://www.axios.com/europe-lessons-reopening-schools-b713801e-26d6-4ba1-bb9e-c0b0b5809a11.html

The Brits seem to have solved the problem with a 90-minute test box smaller than a shoebox. Same guy who invented the DNA nutrition test box. The National Health Service is putting them in hospitals, airports, etc. quickly. A lot to be said for having a national health service. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-08-06/how-a-dna-test-machine-mutated-to-find-covid-in-90-minutes https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-53632043

It's open today.

and assuming all those kids don't live in orphanages, that's 200 parents plus siblings and maybe some grannies and gramps.

Many schools open this week in the US and in Europe. This is how today looks in Georgia. What could go wrong?

What a few people are doing is spending a 14-day period in another country that is not on the "red list" and then going to one of these countries (if the airline will let you on). It's a lot of hassle and you need a good reason to do it. If you want to risk things getting easier, by all means get a refundable/free change ticket. Many airlines have them now. AA announced free changes/cancellations on awards booked by 9/8 today: https://www.dansdeals.com/points-travel/airlines/aa/american-extends-window-book-american-aadvantage-awards-free-date-changes-cancellations/

lol.....Jeff Bezos did not make $13 Billion in one day last week giving anything away for free. WaPo has a very narrow definition of what's free "coronavirus" news. NYT is just a little better.
-
Not WaPo or NYT. Most have gotten smart and don't let you in if not a subscriber.

The flu vaccine each year is notoriously not perfect but still helps a lot. So far the different coronavirus vaccines have shown to be very effective and simple. Let's be optimistic on this vaccine. And you don't need to live in fear, just cut your risks down to what you're ok with. Personally I wouldn't want to get coronavirus in Brazil and deal with their hospitals. But I'd take my chances in Europe. Have you been to Thermas in Barcelona?

Paywalled.

at least in Russia: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-53621708 There are several promising vaccines in stage III now or soon.

hmm. Ive always wanted to visit Krakow and its right across the Czech border from Ostrava.

Are they mostly in Warsaw? In Czech they're all in Prague.

Odd, I don't remember them talking about a constitutional right to spead your germs around during the AIDS epidemic. Who starts this "constitutional right" to spread your germs in an epidemic bullshit? I've read that police are much more right-wing than the military even.

Think they're upholders of the constitution. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jul/31/us-sheriffs-mask-orders-covid-19-blm?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Email
