  1. Marina da Glória and Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas are filthy. Mayor Eduardo Paes lied aND continues the lie. The same 500 million budgeted to clean up the bay was used for the Deodoro installations. There were never any funds budgeted to clean up the bay. This is Brasil, if there was money there to spend, the politicians would have awarded contracts to friends for a healthy kickback. 2. I think this is piece from the NY Times is quite informative of the problems endemic to the nation. Whether it is the new railroad in the north, the Belo Monte dam in Para or the new refinery complex in Itaborai, just to the northeast of Niteroi, problems here continue to appear. Less than a year to go to the Olympics and this city is still a mess. I'll be amazed if the new museum by Calatrava, the aquarium, line 4 of the Metro, parts of the the new VLT tram system as well as all of the Olympic installations are completed correctly and not like what happened for the PanAm games in 2007. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/09/business/international/effects-of-petrobras-scandal-leave-brazilians-lamenting-a-lost-dream.html?emc=edit_th_20150809&nl=todaysheadlines&nlid=65920222&_r=0
  3. I have to wear the watch sometime. Otherwise it will just collect dust.
  4. A different article on the AP mentions that the ocean water in Copa tested poorly for many values and Jardim de Alah connects beach in Ipa and Lagoa Rodrigo De Freitas.
  5. Sunday night in Botafogo about 11:30PM I nearly got robbed for my good watch. Thiago was nearby and scared the guy off. Monday after in Lapa/Bairro de Fatima we were sitting in Al-Kuwait restaurant across from Bar das Quengas on Mem de Sa, and a guy skirted along the sidewalk next to the window and nearly stole Thiago's cell phone. With his hand out, I pushed the phone in Thiago's hand away from the window. Last November I was using my Samsung Note on the sidewalk near a building and a guy on a bike road up onto a sidewalk and swiped it right out of my hand. No one is going to help you once anything occurs. It isn't work it. Keep one eye always out for trouble.
  6. 23 kilos maximum on TAM. Above that us an over weight limit penalty. Cheaper I think to probably bring a second suitcase.
  7. I'll be here almost certainly unless I've moved to my final home from here on the beach to my plot in Caju at the cemetery.
  8. The name is also spelled here as KAWA. There was a very hot garoto until recently at 117 from Belo Horizonte, tall with a.swimmer's build, shaved chest and enormous penis, 24 or so, named THAWAAN. I find even more interesting all of the variations on Thiago. Tiago Hiago Diego Diogo biblical origins from Iakove, Yakov, Iago in Merchant of Venice
  9. Pauleiro,I should be here, PM me.and we can get together. OZ thanks for the concern. Anyone interested in some messy numbers that I forgot to include, my BP was in the range of 60 to 70 over 35 to 42 and a pulse running at 140 to 170 for over 24 hours. Risk of stroking out. Normal for me is 105 over 70 and pulse of 58 or so. Three shots of xylocaine in 75 minutes. On oxygen of course. Two bags of anti arrhythmic drugs.and glucose solution. Scariest was when.the.ordered the nurse.to lower the head of the bed and raise the foot portion. At that point he lifted my legs and placed my feet on his shoulders to get whatever blood was circulating to my vital organs and brain. I was done being scared and actually ready for death st that point. I was much worse 4 days earlier when the shocked my heart to try to reset my heartbeat. I won't get to sappy with what I wrote to Thiago, but he did.agree to come back and he is wearing his committment ring/aliança daily.
  10. That was the night we missed each other and the start.of.my heart issues. It only takes one.I had a really fun time with Dinho, who I think you have been with. I wish I had held off because.in.my last circle of the house trying to find you before leaving to go home and then the ER tge next morning, I saw Raphael with the Elisabete tattoo. Really handsome. Someone is sure to take him out of there and off of the market if he is any good in the sack. He is just too handsome to last.
  11. I was at Meio Mundo about a month back and there are somw new guys who are 18 and 19 and look it. When I was at 117 on Friday, 10 July to meet TeaLady, there was a brand new guy with Elisabete(his mamãe) tattooed on his left peck who I thought quite handsome and all of 19.
  12. I haven't posted here or been on line at all as my internet service provider went out of business. But I am now reconnected and some interested reading recently. Came back from a glorious, wondrous trip to the Lencois Marenheses. I can recommend it to anyone who is young enough to take the dryness and heat. Me, with my heart condition could not. I'll post photos soon. I spent 7 of the past 10 days(until Wednesday July 16) in either the ER or Cardiac ICU unit at Hospital Sao Lucas. Basically died on Sunday of this week. I have been ruled out of action and no longer can use either saunas dry or steam. Which sucks as I have both in my home here as well. So problems, and all, (Driver - You were correct and I owe you a drink or a meal) I have gone back to my Thiago.
  13. Starbucks does their roasting only with Arabica beans whilê here in Brasil they export the smoother Arabica and generally roast only the rougher Robusta beans. I am in São Luis right now. But Sunday morning while Hubbing at Confins in BH, there was not a cup of decaf to be found at any spot. Trust me. I checked. I had 2 1/2 to kill between flights.
  14. Thanks for the suggestion. But the pousada in Atins, much more rustic than Barreirinhas, has two 4x4's with drivers that they hire out. I am renting a cheapo from Hertz, The 4x4's were all rented 3 months ago from them and really expensive as well. 3 days in Sao Luis and then 4 days at the Lencois Marenhenses. I have a 23 year-old from Maranhoa to share my bed and keep me company and whatever. So then we are taking a boat to Atins from Barreirinhas. Besides 2 Toyotas, They also have a couple of boats to navigate the rivers. I was expressly warned not to attempt navigating the sandy paths to arrive there. http://www.pcatins.com.br/
  15. And do buy a prepaid fare card that is rechargeable. Put 20 or 50 Reais on it.Fare is 3.70 right now. Saves much time in paying for a new fare each time you take the metro.
  16. I'm off to the Sand Dunes of Marenhao for a week, but I plan on seeing it when I return. I was at the Picasso Museum in Barcelona this past March and then visiting the Guernica in Madrid at the Reina Sofia, and also after the terrible Kandinsky show, my hopes are few for anything interesting. When I passed by the CCBB after Meio Mundo on Friday, there were very few visitors in line for the exhibit, even if it was opening day. I can remember when the Impressionists from Paris were on display and from Day 1, the waiting line was around the block circling to the the back of the CCBB
  17. I can remember a couple or more years ago that Meio Mundo had strippers and then the drag shows. The combination kept me around and perhaps other clients as well. I would have a programa, rest up at bit, enjoy the strippers and maybe part of the show, have a another programa and then maybe return for more of the show or bingo and then take off. It keep me there for more hours and certainly added to my bar tab. Recently, I have arrived around 5:30 or 6:00 pm before the first group has been there for the three hour minimum and maybe found someone I liked to take upstairs. After, I'll talk a cursory tour of the premises and if nothing of interest, get dressed and leave. Without the strippers and an earlier start to the drag show, I haven't been staying around. And has TomCal has written, the audience for the drag show brings in a different crowd than regular clients.
  18. A bit tangential but more than a bit on topic,I go to Starbucks here to get my decaf coffee for the house. My cardiologist won't permit me caffeine any longer. Starbucks hasn't had a delivery of coffee from the USA for four months. A coffee store that has hardly any products to sell besides mugs. And all of the remaining coffee is discounted as it is out of code. Customs in Santos is supposedly holding up most imports, unless palms are greased if not butt holes.
  19. I went to Cafe Felicce on Rua Gomes Carnero in Ipa with TeaLady on Tuesday afternoon. Another TomCal spot. Very nice food and service, Portions were okay, Prices were a bit on the high side to me (but then I normally lunch at 28-40Reais/kilo places) but used quality ingredients.
  20. Last week the unemployment figures were released for May: Expected job losses at around 65,000. Actual number of firings 116,000. Yesterday on the news here a government organization that tracks these things had an uptick in the unemployment rate to 6.8% from last month's 6.3% and they released a prediction that it will get worse by the end of the year, reaching a figure of 8% unemployment. And that is the official figure. Actual is higher. Even worse was the explanation given that as this is a socialist country with salary, pay and fee scales for everything including legal fees, and with safety for worker's salaries, there are massive firings and then smaller rehirings that take place for companies. A company in this recessionary economy is not allowed to offer anyone continued employment at a lower salary. Yesterday in the middle of rush hour, closing down Avenida Rio Branco, there was a demonstration urging a strike by all federal workers for higher wages. In yesterday's NY TImes there was a great article about the the three month strike of the school teachers in the state of Sao Paulo. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/26/opinion/vanessa-barbara-another-defeat-for-brazils-kids.html?_r=0 The article explains quite well some of the problems in Brasil and how the laws are written protecting workers. I have a straight friend here who studied at the University of Alabama - Huntsville on a tennis scholarship. He had exactly one grandparent born in Portugal, The other three wee born here. But that was enough for him to get his passport this week, He said anything is better than working for 2000Reais/month, with no future here and no rewards in this country for individual incentive.
  21. Then 62 people are greatly mistaken as to what one could consider good to fine German/European cuisine. I cannot forget your cut and paste job at this site or the other one concerning the wonderful reviews for the quite sad zoo in Rio either.
  22. They are almost all dirty. Endemic to the society here.
  23. MVAN1. Stop the cut and paste shit already. I've eaten there more than once. The question is have you? If anyone thinks that when dining at Casa Urich, they will enjoy food at all similar to what one will find at a German, Polish or Czech restaurant back in the States, they are in for a major disappointment.
