I kid you not. In Ipanema, some sidewalks onRua Barao da Torre, the next street away from the ocean after the main one in Ipanema, Visconde de Piraja, and this is where they are tunneling the new Metro Line 4. Instead of blasting through the rock with the tunnel boring machine at 40 meters depth, they have been going through at 12 meters depth and excavating the easier sand mixed with rock. I'd guess to save money and speed up the pace for the Olympics. Non? In any event some sidewalks have now collapsed and the construction has been put on hold for 30-60 days. Between this and the non-cleanup of the Bay, what's next? Oh, yep. The plan to reuse the Velodrome from the 2007 Pan-Am's is a no-go and that is now out for bids. Not for construction as of yet, just for bids.

Guanabara Bay Will Not Be Cleaned Up For Olympics
ihpguy replied to ihpguy's topic in Latin America Men and Destinations
I was reading that at the Beijing Games, the Chinese had a flotilla of 1000 boats skimming the water. The Brasilians plan to be more efficient(NOT!) and do the job with 10. It is really a joke. I used to live in Chicago and was in the city when the vote was televised live and Chicago was the first candidate city to be voted out. Born and raised there, experienced with the way "The City That Works'" actually works, the fix was in. Chicago's second more unofficial motto is "Where's Mine?" and Rio must have supplied quite a bit more including a neverending supply of garotas and garotos de programma to the voters. It is marvelous to witness the changes taking place here in "The Marvelous City" daily. However, when it comes to planning, constructing and then finally running world championships in 28 or so sports, the experience will almost surely be less than "Marvelous." -
Guanabara Bay Will Not Be Cleaned Up For Olympics

The problem with Rodrigo de Freitas is different than Guanabara Bay. In the lake there is a toxic mix of chemicals. And all of a sudden, there will be masses of floating dead fish. No way to predict when it will happen. But just imagine the press if in the middle of the Cocksucked 8"s, the surface is filled with dead floaters and the massive and muscluar performing rowers can't finish themselves err, off? -
Ryan thought he'd win an Oscar for Barry Lyndon or at least be nominated for Best Actor. Also thought the film would be have big B.O. so took a reduced salary against the gross. Big Mistake!

This link to a NY Times is both sad and ironic. Sad that the politicisans have stolen the most of the first billion provided by Japan 20 years ago and continue to waste money instead of doing what needs to be done, whether visible to the populace or not - connect sewers to the built and in operation, but underused sewage treatment plants covering the metropolitan area. During the report, it is mentioned the "Ilha Fundao," this is the island where the large hospital for the Federal University's Med School can be seen on the other side of the causeway when leaving the airport. What is not even mentioned is that the treatment plants in Caju, just north of centro and at Jardim Oceanico in Baja, are only operating at about 50% of capacity because the politicians are not hooking them up to the sewers. Ironic as on my way back to the states last month, I had a very heated discussion about the bay clean-up with an American teaching English in Macae, the true center of the oil drilling industry in Rio de Janeiro state. He was definitely wearing rose-colored glasses. I'd told him I live on the bay and it is an enormous body of water with the raw sewage of millions pouring into it daily. I told him it was impossible to do the invisible work of connecting sewers to the treatment plants and cleaning the water in just two years. He kept on saying not to be so negative; if only everyone worked together, fantastic things could be accomplished. He practically told him he was full of more shite per square meter than Guanabara Bay. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/19/world/americas/memo-to-olympic-sailors-in-rio-dont-touch-the-water.html?emc=edit_tnt_20140519&nlid=65920222&tntemail0=y&_r=0

Any Reviews Scorial Rio Hotel 5/17 Arrival $138/night

There has also been a new method to take people up the hill to Christo Redentor atop Corcovado. The buses go from Largo do Machado to the base at Cosme Velho and then up the hill to the statue's base. Alternatively you can catch the funicular railway up to the base. I haven't been since 2012, but at the time the buses were the quicker option to the railway. -

You've got an old map there, LurkerSpeaks. The Uruguai stop at the end of Line 1/Linha 1 has already opened. Quite nice for a subway stop inside. As to the hotel, I know exactly where it is located, have passed it more times than I can count. Very, very close to Largo do Machado and from there really easy to get to the beach at Farme de Amoedo. Walking distance to 117. Also three non-rent saunas in Catete even closer than 117, if the urge strikes. Sauna Catete on Correa Dutra is especially nice with four floors and private rooms to rent. And open all night 24/7 on weekends and holidays. My best friend met his lover of four years there. A doctor, by the way although not a jewish one to bring home to Mama. Ursos Do Rio will be having intergenerational dance parties as well during the month of Copa Mundial just past the Catete metro stop at the Espaco Marun. I personally enjoy the evenings and all of the street life that surround the Largo do Machado than what you will find in Copacabana and Ipanema. But that is just my preference. People more normal, genuine, not so what we call nariz em pe/noses stuck up in the air. Best anc cheapest middle eastern food can be found right on the Largo do Marchado. And right around the corner by the traffic circle 1/4 block from the metro stop is the absolute best fresh acai from Para state at the Tacaca do Norte. -
Last week they struck for one day to protest the future dismissal of all of the fare collectors. A majority of the buses have one. Some smaller buses do not. Today they are back on strike for a 40% pay increase. It certainly does make the streets quite empty in the city center. I was planning on hopping the metro, but with the strike, decided the crowds would be too much. The bank situation is ridiculous. Today, I had enough money to deposit that I wanted to hand it in to a person and not the teller machine. So I try to push the revolving door open. I'm not getting anywhere. I'm pushing. And pushing. And pushing some more. No movement. Hmm. I think well maybe the bank is closed down. Or the revolving door is broken. Who knows? Then I hear the bank guard, one of only two staffing the branch instead of the normal 4,5 or 6, yelling through the door that money transaction can only be made at the machines. I said fine, let me in. So he moves away from the door and it revolves just fine. Come on. Friday they are refusing cash transactions with tellers at a different branch. And today they are not even letting you into the branch before firs advising you of the situation. Once I was inside I said to the guard that I had quite a bit of money in my pocket and as a security guard it was safer to let clients in off of the street than to leave them standing outside open to being robbed. Needlees to say, this branch had three tellers and exactly three customers ahead of me in the line. And the teller took my funds with no problem. Swiftian territroy.

Sao Paulo's Terminal 3 Opened Today
ihpguy replied to ihpguy's topic in Latin America Men and Destinations
Come on down....only problem is that Sao Paulo is a bit of a plane/bus ride and United is ending their tag-on if you want to experience Terminal 3, besides experiencing Lagoa. And as to where I live, besides the favela location, if you miss the last boat, you are sleeping on the street or going to a motel or La Cueva or ....whoring wherever in Lapa/Bairro de Fatima. -
The photos look like a huge improvement over the two older terminals. 20 gates and what's even more important, even a Starbucks. http://www.panrotas.com.br/album-de-fotos-turismo/aviacao/conheca-o-t3-do-aeroporto-de-guarulhos-sp_100330.html

Federal Police Threaten World Cup Strike
ihpguy replied to ihpguy's topic in Latin America Men and Destinations
Definitely don't reconsider. The bus strike ended in one day. A friend told me what the problem was. There are rumors that they want to get rid of the moneychangers/trocadores on each bus. Since the introduction of the RioCard/BilheteUnico/various farepay cards. many less people are using cash when they ride the bus, so they want the drivers to also the diminished ticket sales. That would put a lot of people out of work. And most tourists only take the metro anyway. Or taxis. Te ATM's work just find to pull out money. Minor problems. Doubtful that this guards strike will last that long. For sure whatever happens with the Federal Police will be over quick. I think right now that Brasilia's big fear is if everything dosn't run smoothly, that the rumors might come true and the Olympics will end up back in London for the second time in a row. One report I read yesterday stated that it this time in 2004, Athens was 40% completed with their preparations. London at 60% Rio de Janeiro at an incredible 10% WOW
