  1. An advance team for the Olympics just finished testing the water quality in Rio. Turns out that tap water in Rio has a viral load equivalent to raw sewage. According to ESPN, the Olympic Committee is bitching that the water is not safe enough to stage the swimming events. Raw sewage? Ewww...
  2. Apparently Mom ain't big on all that fashionable "fluid sexuality" nonsense.
  3. One could make the argument that total expenditures on personal care products correlate more strongly with homely than with handsome.
  4. Not something so very different than even the most liberal politicians would have said for much of my lifetime. And certainly much milder than your average American pol would have put it even 30 years ago.
  5. Obscene, filthy jungle music, circa 1950's: so... Just saying
  6. Episode 2723 of AS's struggle with modern sexual mores:
  7. Damn, AS, I'm still laughing.
  8. AdamSmith, I think I've found a new kink for you to perv on: Or was I too late again?
  9. I used to advise people who wanted to work retail that retail involved dealing with the general public. And the general public meant everybody not currently under lock and key. Posting on a public website has much in common with working retail except lots of folks in lock-up have access to the internet.
  10. RA1, sometimes I worry about you.
  11. Pics are a good thing.
  12. I'd probably read that. Depending on the illustrations and cover art, of course.
  13. White folks come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, RA1. And no, not all of them are racist. But some are. Some.
  14. I seem to recall (way back when) feeling like seeing Atticus as anything other than a racist was an almost wilful misreading of the novel. The movie version has always made me extremely uncomfortable in its ambiguity on this point. See the nice white man stand up and defend the poor colored boy from those nasty peckerwoods. To me, Atticus was a kindly inclined man with strong ideas of fairness & of his responsibility as a lawyer to defend his client, negro or no. Throw in a little noblesse oblige toward lesser, dependant folks and there you have Lawyer Finch in a nutshell. I grew up around any number of White Southerners pretty much like that. A lack of animus toward black people as individuals was not the same thing as having any sense of urgentcy to see the caste system of the South shattered, not by a long shot. There is a documentary on Ms. Lee currently running on PBS that quotes her as being quite hostile to Freedom Riders forcing the issue of segregation in public accommodations. (In fairness to her, she found the early MLK program of peaceful petitioning for redress of grievances much more palatable.) Again, not unlike a lot of the folks I grew up with.
  15. Oh my god, it's (more or less) true. I thought Boiworship & AS were just yanking my autism spectrum chain. From Wiki: In 1924, Hugo Boss started a clothing company in Metzingen, a small town south of Stuttgart, where it is still based. Due to the economic climate of Germany at the time, Boss was forced into bankruptcy. In 1931, he reached an agreement with his creditors, leaving him with six sewing machines to start again. That same year, he became a member of the Nazi Party and a sponsoring member ("Förderndes Mitglied") of the Schutzstaffel (SS). With their help, his economic situation improved. He also joined the German Labour Front in 1936, the Reich Air Protection Association in 1939, and the National Socialist People's Welfare in 1941. After joining these organizations, his sales increased from 38,260 RM ($26,993 U.S. dollars in 1932) to over 3,300,000 RM in 1941. His profits also increased in the same time period from 5,000 RM to 241,000 RM. Though he claimed in a 1934-1935 advertisement that he had been a "supplier for National Socialist uniforms since 1924," it is probable that he did not begin to supply them until 1928 at the earliest. This is the year he became an Reichszeugmeisterei-licensed (official) supplier of uniforms to the Sturmabteilung, Schutzstaffel, Hitler Youth, National Socialist Motor Corps, and other party organizations. For production in later years of the war, Hugo Boss used prisoners of war and forced labourers, from the Baltic States, Belgium, France, Italy, Austria, Poland, Czechoslovakia, and the Soviet Union.[2] According to German historian Henning Kober, the company managers were fervent Nazis who were all great admirers of Adolf Hitler. In 1945 Hugo Boss had a photograph in his apartment of him with Hitler, taken at Hitler's Obersalzberg retreat.[3]
  16. Damn, you beat me to it. Again. Well, what do you think, AS? As good as Capote or not?
  17. Dear Adam, N.hemsleyana is a pitcher plant after your own heart! Sincerely yours, Chance
  18. Ever had one of those moments when you said to yourself, "Bless his heart, but he sure sounds Gay?" Or worse yet, " Oh my God, I sound soooo Gay!!" (& just why is that worse? hmm...) I mean, why is it that so many of us have that stereotypically gay voice? (& don't pretend you don't know what I'm talking about. Jesus, I can actually hear Sucky's speech mannerisms just through his posting style. Sorry Grandma, but it's true.) Is it something we somehow pick up from the environment? You telling me Truman Capote somehow learned to talk like, well, Truman Capote, in Columbus freaking Mississippi? On the other hand, the nearest parallel I can come up with is the Southern Belle. I'm thinking specifically of three girls I know very well (2 cousins & the sister of a close friend) who were perfectly normal children but who morphed into full blown Southern Belles in the 8th/9th grade, complete with mannerisms and speech patterns. It was scary! Interestingly enough, one of them regressed to normal sometime during college, one remains a Belle to this day and one kind of settled into a middle ground. So again, not unlike many of us Gays. Anyhoo, this guy, David Thorp, got fascinated by this very question and made a documentary exploring the subject. Interviewed all kinds of people about the origins of the Gay voice. I can't wait to see it.
  19. Sylvan Learning tutorial:
  20. The aforementioned sylvan is one and the same 'sylvan' embedded in Pennsylvania (Penn's Woods), so named by Charles II after William Penn (or his father, accounts vary). Good Lord, people, where did you go to school?
  21. Just speaking for myself, I think it might make for fascinating reading to see an authentic garoto posting here.
  22. In a word...yes.
  23. classic frog legs.
  24. Now that's my idea of a movie review. You done good, tealady!
