It was the Best of Times, It was the Worst of Times
MsGuy replied to TotallyOz's topic in The Beer Bar
Perfect exemplar of TY's proposition: I get my ego stroked & BBB gets a resevoir of warm feelings to draw on in the future. ---- Or maybe this post (mine) supports TY's other admonition : -
It was the Best of Times, It was the Worst of Times

Maybe it's not actually enabled. I just tried to + this post & got the over quota messege. Not only more civilized but better suited to a board like this one. It's not like we have a vast universe of active posters who need some automated crowd think mechanism to judge the reliability each other's posts. -
AC360 laid one of those ambush/attack interviews on Craig Newmark in D.C. tonight blasting CL for acting as a clearing house for pimps & underage prostitution. In all fairness to Anderson Cooper he did (weakly) try to tone down the young lady doing the reporting. Sigh, ratings must have been off lately.

LOL, back when we were kids, it was!

RE:ACTthe official blog of the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association ran a piece on the ethics of this outing. The 'Update' link at the end of the article has significant additional information. The comments cover every concievable take on this (you can skim past the usual redundancy ). The Ethics of outing Courage--Updated. Excerpt from comments: Lyn Carlson (Sherva), on June 24, 2010 at 11:14 am Said: I was Children’s Ministry Director at hope Lutheran from 1990- 1996. Tom Brock, SR Pastor, asked me to resign when my husband & I divorced AND my gay son was 18 and self medicting with alcohol. Brent died of alcohol poisoning in 2000. Tom Brock’s homophobic railings from the pulpit broke spirits, and one was my son’s. Seems to me Tom Brock should resign… I had to. Reply Jay, on June 24, 2010 at 2:54 pm Said: So sorry to learn of your son’s death and of your firing by Brock. The kind of smug self-righteousness he revealed in forcing you out because of your divorce seems to be characteristic of him, and may help explain his self-loathing. In any case, he deserves no sympathy. I have no sympathy for Courage either: this is a dangerous organization that practices “reparative therapy,” which has been condemned by the American Psychological Association as unethical and harmful. I hope that other journalists infiltrate them and shine some sunlight on their abusive practices

Oh, we're still around. Just with a little more waist and a little less hair. Except in our ears. And all those wrinkles. SIGH!

I hate it when I get a red X on one of Lookin's posts. I can only wonder if he meant something like this: or this: or maybe even:

IMO, conservatives have been fairly successful in inserting connotations such as knee-jerk, leftist, nanny state, eliteist and the like into the word "liberal" in the general public discourse. Liberals have been considerably less successful in associating the word "conservative" with wingnut, extremist, bigot, etc. As it's a disadvantage to have to expend one's resources constantly explaining what one is not, liberals choose other less defined words to self-identify. Hence "progressive." Not much different from homosexuals choosing "gay" over "faggot" when you get down to it.

Hard to feel anything but sad for the knots Rev. Tom Brock has tied himself up in. The method the reporter used to out him though makes me feel a little quesy. Is it really ok for news organizations to infiltrate confidential support groups in search of a scoop? How many support groups for gays could survive this type of scrutiny? excerpt: "A few months ago, the publisher of Lavender got a tip that Brock was attending meetings of Courage, a Catholic support group for people trying to resist same-sex urges. A freelance writer attended the group posing as a prospective member, then wrote about Brock's attendance there — a move viewed by many as journalistically unethical." The more I think about it, the less I like it.

A new study of Japanese macaques has found one of the most effective ways to annoy a monkey is to place it in proximity to a flying squirrel. ---- Loved "nurdle."

LOL, it would take a lot to embarrass ole Bill.

I used to think the Great Depression had permanently innoculated the US political class against running the economy straight off the cliff. Kinda like the way a horror of inflation is built into the German political DNA. Now I'm not so sure. This time it looks likes it's business as usual and devil take the hindmost all the way to the bottom. The Dems and Repubs both make my stomach hurt.

Thanks Tomcal and FourAces for the additional links. ---- I thought you might like to read his coming out post on his official website. "A message from Joe < BackPosted 30th July 2010 Hey Guys, Tomorrow there will be some articles about me in the newspapers because I have been doing some important interviews today. I wanted you to know that the articles are true. I also wanted you to know that I really respect your loyal support and all the kind messages I have had from you up to this date. I have always been a very honest person and so it is important for me to continue to be honest. It has been the most amazing year so far and I feel so privileged. It’s also been a time of real self realisation and I feel as if I have grown up so much in these few months. There has been speculation about my sexuality in the past and I have always been honest at the time I have been asked. Over the past few weeks I have really had time to reflect and to realise who I am. I spoke to my friends and family about this in the last few days and it was important to do the same for you all as you have been so supportive. I have had nothing but support from you and many of you have been very open in saying that you will continue to support me whatever my sexuality. It is important to me to let you know first, so that you know the stories in the papers are true. I made the choice to speak openly about this. Again, I can’t thank you enough for all your support. Everything is going well and I’m really happy to be able to move forward from here Joe. x "

Thanks for the links, KYTOP, esp. to his first audition. Call me a sucker for sentimentality, but seeing that Granny in her wheelchair bursting with pride and happiness as her beloved grandson knocked the audience dead was wonderful.

Lucky, I think I had the same problem when I was teaching myself how to post here. If you're using the copy/paste method for your URL, you need to first erase the existing "http://" in the insert image box.

Joe McElderry, X-Factor winner, outed himself yesterday and today posted thanks to his fans for their overwhelming support. Wow, these things sure move faster on internet time. I'm guessing Sunday his Mom joins PFLAG, Monday he makes a commercial supporting Gay marriage and, by Tuesday, it's all yesterday's news. Cute kid, though. If I'd known I would have watched the show. AS, for some reason I thought of your monogomy post when I read this article on separation.

At least since Rousseau there's been a strain in Western thought that conflates the good with the natural. Just keep in mind that bopping your neighbor over the head with an axe is at least as natural as thinking with your little head.

Sounds like it occurred to the young gentleman in question that he might wind up in your car trunk wrapped in Visqueen. Sigh. Where's the trust nowadays?

When I hit the Register button anywhere but the board's home page, I get a "page error." Register seems to work ok from home page (although I did not fully complete the form). Is this the problem your friends incurred?

Well, if you're absolutely sure about that...

Agree with FourAces that these essays shouldn't be buried in the archives. Grouping them as a separate set of threads would be a great way to showcase them and stimulate new posts, comments.
