Most of the troops fly into Afganistan via Russia and its satellite stans. Most of the material supply runs through Pakistan. Until we pack up and go home, the Paki's have us by the shorts and you better believe they know it.
  5. Not Wiki for sure: "Lee's childhood friend, author Truman Capote, wrote on the dust jacket of the first edition, "Someone rare has written this very fine first novel: a writer with the liveliest sense of life, and the warmest, most authentic sense of humor. A touching book; and so funny, so likeable." This comment has been construed to suggest that Capote wrote the book or edited it heavily. The only supporting evidence for this rumor is the 2003 report of a Tuscaloosa newspaper, which quoted Capote's biological father, Archulus Persons, as claiming that Capote had written "almost all" of the book. The rumors were put to rest in 2006 when a Capote letter was donated to Monroeville's literary heritage museum. Writing to a neighbor in Monroeville in 1959, Capote mentioned that Lee was writing a book that was to be published soon. Extensive notes between Lee and her editor at Lippincott also refute the rumor of Capote's authorship.[123] Lee's older sister Alice has responded to the rumor, saying: "That's the biggest lie ever told." You know, OZ, Lucky has a really dry sense of humor. Sometimes it's best not to take him too literally.
  6. "The court said an anonymous caller who described himself as the father of a Farb student told a police dispatcher in June 2008 about Lampedusa's ad on Craigslist." Dad, apparently closeted and conflicted, did the deed.
  7. "Lahey pleaded guilty to the charges on May 4, 2011, and is scheduled to return to court May 26, 2011, to set a sentencing date. Lahey waived his bail and asked to begin serving his time immediately." Wikipedia

  9. Trust but verify!
  10. Quite a modest train for a Royal. Less than 1/2 the length of Diana's.
  11. ---- sorry bout that, clearly another case of the guilty fleeing when no man pursues...
  12. No ring and no prenup. A true triump of hope over experience!
  13. Gosh, Lucky, reading the WSJ takes a couple of hours, I blow through my weekly copy of The Economist in a day or so and Foreign Affairs only arrives once every two months. A little fluff for filler makes the time past faster. I guess I could dig the old hair shirt out of storage. Maybe that might keep my mind on the serious stuff.

  15. I recommend the Stonewall Uprising documentary showing on "American Experience" this week. The show focuses as much on the social and cultural context Stonewall occurred in as it does the events of that weekend itself. Fair warning: some of the stuff it documents is depressing as hell. For anyone whose local station has already broadcast the program, here is a link to watch it online: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/films/stonewall/player/
  16. After WWII we somehow managed to convince ourselves that we needed to run the world to be successful; that we needed to be the biggest badest outfit on the planet to survive. To me, it's not entirely clear why someone else's success should necessarily be equated with failure on our part.
  17. Wages are already increasing dramatically in China, Expat. Labor intensive, low productivity Chinese manufacturing firms have been shifting plants both deeper into the interior and into countries like Viet Nam searching for cheaper labor. Meanwhile the bulk of the economy is moving up the productivily food chain, a natural and inevitable result of their success, not a harbinger of their decline. Now whether their currupt 3rd world political system and rickety Alice in Wonderland finantial system will be able to hold together under the stress of managing a world class economy is anyone's guess. But we completely agree on one point: it's fascinating to watch.
  18. The crucifixition is time linked to the last supper, which is in turn tied to Passover. Passover has a floating date but it always occurs in the Spring. I don't doubt the bunnies and such are imports, but the date itself is fixed by the Jewish lunar calender.
  19. Damn right, Lucky! They should only give out those handicapped stickers to those that really need them!
