  1. Rebekah Brooks finally went down under heavy fire. No one left now to fling to the angry villagers but James Murdock and that would screw up all the succession plans. Times must be getting desperate in Castle Murdock. ---- Wonder whether Ms. Brooks will stay loyal if the police insist on her "assisting in their inquiries?" As Nixon discovered, it's a rare subordinate who will jump on the grenade for you.
  2. And while all this 14th Amendment stuff is working itself out in the courts and Congress no doubt flocks of folks will be lining up to buy all those T-bills of doubtful legality. Taking the 14th Amendment route is kinda like betting the pistol to your head will misfire.
  3. Have always had a thing for that song, Lurker. Thanks for the post.
  4. Personally, I think the good Archbishop Dolan is a day late and a dollar short on the the infidelity part but I wish him the best in his new obsessions: ---- NEW YORK — New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan says he's worried that the next step in the marriage debate will be another redefinition to allow multiple partners and infidelity. Writing on his blog Thursday, Dolan also lamented the anti-Catholic venom that surfaced in the gay marriage battle, saying he's worried that "believers will soon be harassed, threatened, and hauled into court" for their convictions. He also apologized to those in the gay community who may have been offended by the church's stance, saying he's honored that so many gays are at home in the Catholic Church and that his goal from the start was "pro-marriage, never anti-gay." ---- Is this the same guy who instructed his local parish & church organizations this week to kick out any politician who had supported gay marriage? I'm not really sure, maybe it was some other NY bishop.
  5. Patience, Lurker, patience. Tomcal may be busy with further research at the moment.
  6. Nice to see you posting again, Xian. Let us know how things turn out in Thailand. P.S. Why did you finally decide against Bali? (See, someone really does read your blog. )
  7. Looking forward to first hand reports from the both of you.
  8. Well...FDR did appoint Joe Kennedy as the first chairman of the SEC. Just saying.
  9. LOL, I was just thinking that, Lookin. This board continues to surprise me with the range of its posters' interests.
  10. Seems to me we are edging back into pistol to your own head territory here. A country planning on issueing a couple of trillion bucks in new debt (under the most wildly optimistic estimates), not to mention rolling over several trillion more in existing bonds, shouldn't be going out of its way to raise questions as to its reliablity as a debtor. US national debt per (income)taxpayer: $129,540
  11. You're entirely correct, RA1, but for procedural reasons it's convenient for the party that controls only one house to hold "must do" legislation hostage to gain leverage on the rest of the players. We saw this same type of kerfuffle last December on the tax bill, last Spring on the budget resolution, and we'll see it again next Fall on next fiscal year's budget. It's kinda like what's happening in Europe right now: Germany holds a pistol to Greece's head and announces that private creditors have to take a haircut or they'll pull the trigger; the ECB holds a pistol to Greece's head and threatens to pull the trigger if there's any haircut for bond holders; Greece puts a pistol to it's own head and threatens to pull the trigger if everybody else doesn't pony up. Winner is whoever convinces the others he's the craziest. It's all the finest kind of political Kabuki of course, unless one of the players slips up & one of those guns goes off. Personally, I don't think one should go around pointing guns at heads that you don't intend to shoot. Accidents happen.

    The last 3 movies

Poor Oz, trapped in the back row of his favorite Bangkok movie house with a gaggle of the finest bar boys, pining away from lack of an indie film or two. Oh the horror! Oh the humanity!
  13. "Yankee" is Japanese slang for a violent young street thug/gang member (basically "yobbish chav" to you guys from the wrong side of the Atlantic).

    Sexy names

"Automan is an American science fiction superhero television series produced by Glen A. Larson. It aired for only 12 episodes (although 13 were made) on ABC..." LOL, must have been a hell of a stinker to be cancelled w/o even showing a paid for episode.
  15. Dance like no one is watching!
  16. If I were as young, cute and athletic as that guy, I'd be dancing like there was no tommorrow too. Well, maybe with the help of a professional choreographer.
  17. So...did you leave the bench sticky, OZ, or did you scrub down the facilities afterwards? Inquiring minds, etc.
  18. Zombiefied critters appear to be a bit more common than one would like: snails, grasshoppers and ants more ants Apparently there's a family of fungi (cordyceps) that specializes in this stuff. The BBC made a program about it. ---- P.S. Did you check this definition? pip (1) A pain in the ass. (2) A real character. (3) Someone who tends to be difficult, but still likeable.
  19. The Hardy Boys were OK, but it was the Tom Corbett, Space Cadet, books that tripped my trigger. All American Tom, snarky Roger Manning and the hunky man's man Astro. I did all sorts of odd jobs to scrape up the cash to buy the series (8 books, if I remember right).
  20. You have great taste, Expat. I could do with that sitting on my face too!
  21. OK, OK, that was all nice and good, Lucky, but can we skip past the interviewer and get a translation of what Voicu was saying?
  22. GROUP HUG! You've just been hugged, Lucky. There's no getting out of it this time! Fuss as you will, we still love you.
