My first trip to Rio de janeiro was in October of 2002; in 2003 I went twice: for Carnaval and back in October. From then on I'd tried to make it back to Brasil {per se} at least once a year. Hope to get a similar flavor at my favorite seafood restaurant on Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey. This beloved venue has "local's night" from Monday through Thursday; we locals can get sumptuous meals for under $12. Salmon is one of the meals. Guess I'll go there tomorrow and perhaps on Thursday of this week and attempt to frequent "Old Fisherman's Grotto" at least twice a week from now on when I am NOT traveling. Thanks, ihpguy. If I cooked, I would borrow your recipe with a slight modification {palm of hearts}. I don't like artichokes which are in the same family or perhaps are the same with a different name. I do not live too far from the "Artichoke Capital of the World."

Two weeks ago I'd planned to join friends in Rio de janeiro, but because of health reasons I again had to postpone: doctor's orders. But in the meantime, I was apartment hunting in Rio. It's Sunday, May 12, 2013. I'm spending the day at home and am looking at apartments to rent if I manage to be in Rio for 10 days in August of this year. Also went to www.booking.com to check out hotel rates during this time. Damn, everything listed on the first three pages was over $1000. I stopped after that. Did not check to see what The Atlantico Copacabana Hotel was asking; I do know the hotel which I recommended in the first thread here had rates way over $1050 for a ten day stay! I'll continue to stick with renting apartments. But I want ambience! Many of the apartments don't offer that unless I go to the site which was recommended by another poster. It's something about "Exclusive Apartments."

I've been to its airport, but that is all. Supposedly, it is a city of business and government, and on the weekends, the locals go elsewhere for their fun and relaxation. Tom, I appreciate your recounting of your experiences and presenting them here for our enjoyment, and I also concur with you in traveling with a friend whose interests and desires are compatible to yours. Barr and I have developed a fairly good relationship in terms of traveling together and enjoying the culture that exists in Buenos Aires and Rio and Sao Paulo. By his being with me in terms of sharing apartments and going to events as well as to the saunas-- his presence and being able to converse in the language of the natives-- truly enhanced my travel experiences. Again, thanks and continue to enjoy life!

I, for one, am NOT enamored or obsessed with and/or by "straight men." I can admire the looks of some, but that is that.
