Whereas various officials have called to ban gatherings of more than 250, 100, or 50 people, the Donald wants them limited to 10. As the week has progressed, (degressed?) I imagine many people have come to a new reality about what the corona virus is doing to our lives. Nothing good, it seems. Soon many more stores will be closed as business drops or government edicts shutter them. There are still flocks of students on Florida beaches, but I'll bet next Sunday there will be a lot fewer. Once the virus counts skyrocket, as expected, more people will indeed take this very seriously. Which is to say that I am self-isolating and am grateful to this site and its owner, a Mr. Oz. But the fact is that people will likely gather no matter what. Well, I certainly won't attend any escort parties in Germany! But the fact is that quite a few guys have non-cancellation agreements with their reservations and will come to Palm Springs whether or not Oliver cancels the event. March and April are the two best months to be in the desert and Palm Springs area. A million people flock here for the sun and events. They can still play golf, but the BNP Paribas tennis tournament has been canceled as of today. Rafael Nadal will have to find something else to do! Preparations for the event, including food, were well underway. It's estimated that the closure will cost the valley a half a million dollars. May businesses do much of their annual take during the tourist months. Tons of young people will be unemployed. On a smaller level, my local library has closed. It's the nicest library in the area and will be shut down a minimum of two weeks. Schools are still open, but each cancellation pushes another one along. Stores have been stripped of goods to help keep places virus free. The big events are the Coachella Music Festival, which takes place on two weekends in April. Following that is the Stagecoach country music festival. Closing either or both of them would really devastate the local economy. No word on any other events, but this could be like a house of cards as everyone wants to show that they are ahead of this virus. The Coachella valley, which encompasses Palm Springs, has three cases of the coronavirus.
