Well, I don't wish happy birthday to dead people, but will note that River Phoenix was born on August 23d, and died at the young age of 23. What a sad loss his death was. But, I can wish Happy Birthday to basketball star Jeremy Lin. And guess what? He, too, is 23 on August 23d. May his future be bright.

When one beats the IRS, it probably does not seem wise to shout it from the rooftops. But I did have a minor victory today and can't stay quiet about it, so I will post it here where no one will read about it except those who think I should be on Twitter- both of you! A few weeks back I got a thick package from the IRS, you know- one of those you dread opening. It said I owed $4000 in back taxes and interest. But, I fought back, and today the IRS said I owed $0.00. That felt good.

Yes, I too remember her from her LA days. Who knew she would some day get to ride in the same elevator as Rick Munroe?

40 minutes long, it supposedly recreates the scenes cut from the movie Cruising, which have been destroyed. It also gives rise to more speculation on James Franco, who you don't see with starlet in arm very often.

It's not just a Chinese last name, it's the last word in many Chinese obituaries!

The comedienne, 50, took to her blog on Monday to reveal she suffered a heart attack last week and is now at home recovering. O'Donnell said her health problems began on Aug. 14 after she helped "an enormous woman" who was struggling to get out of her car in a parking lot in Nyack, N.Y. "a few hours later my body hurt/ i had an ache in my chest," she wrote in her usual verse form. "both my arms were sore/everything felt bruised." O'Donnell said she went on about her day despite feeling persistent pain... The next day, O'Donnell visited her cardiologist's office and underwent an EKG. She was then sent to the hospital, where she had a stent inserted and doctors found that her coronary artery was 99 percent blocked. "i am lucky to be here," the mother of four wrote. Nick has announced that he is writing a no-holds barred tell-all about his relationship with Calvin Klein, who he says is supportive of his sobriety. In fact, Calvin paid for the rehab. Not to mention the teeth and hair work. So, I doubt the book will come out. Nick is probably short on cash and trying to get Calvin to ante up some more.

Guess who is with Elton on his yacht! Dolph Lambert! I am so jealous.

Connie Chung turns 66 today. A former anchor, she was the first person to interview magic Johnson after his HIV diagnosis. Married to talk show host Maury Povich, she lives in New York at the famous Dakota apartment building. I stayed there for awhile myself. The Dakota has long been home to luminaries besides me, including Yoko Ono, Lauren Bacall, and Roberta Flack. I have seen Ms. Bacall, said hello to Yoko One right outside the mail room where John Lennon was taken after being shot, and rode the elevator with Ms. Chung. She was impeccably dressed and rode up with her head down so as to avoid contact. But, when I held the door for her, she gave me a nice smile and a thank you. One other famous celebrity I saw in the Dakota was escort Rick Munroe. He recognized me and called out, "Hi, Lucky." He was also dressed very nicely.

DarnTop82, my comment was in reply to the post directly above it. Although our politics are different, I do not think that of you.

Your stated intention is to upset me. Yet there is nothing in my explanation other than facts which show that you have misinterpreted my thread. I suggest that you find someone else to annoy.

Placing a value on Miles and Points is pointless.
Lucky replied to TownsendPLocke's topic in The Beer Bar
"A regular poster on here got a gasp out of me when he wrote that he had considered using 30k frequent flyer miles instead of paying $300 cash." Gasp! Did he? It was actually 50,000 miles as the regular poster (thanks Metamucil!) wanted only the nonstop flights. He ended up getting them for 23, 500 miles. (Thank you Thank You Points!) -
I don't think that a person who is naturally vicious can resist being his true self.

Adam Smith: "Do you really agree with the premise that the issue of cheating is getting more prevalent now than before?" I did not express an opinion.Note that I posed the title of the thread as a question. In my mind, that invited people to discuss the issue.

Gosh, I don't know how we got along in your absence. Not that I remember when you were here before...

I post a serious topic like this and no one responds. So I post snarky remarks about Julia Child, Anderson Cooper and Helen brown and i get all kinds of responses. What does that say about what interests folks here?

Well, if I do remember his birthday next year, at least i will be remembering a gay guy's birthday, not some homophobe's.

Don't be so sure of that! http://www.lifeandstylemag.com/2012/08/how-anderson-cooper-found-out-boyfriend-cheated.html

Will his relationship of three years endure after photos of boyfriend kissing another man surface? Stay tuned for Anderson Jilted, a new reality show on CNN.

When is his birthday?

No doubt she was socially adept enough to make nice in public. Most bigots do. It's what they say in private that you have to worry about.
-
I didn't post the mistake- you did! I was smart enough to know that you had made a mistake, but that mistake was in wishing a dead person a happy birthday. Do you think she will have a happy birthday?

From bostonmagazine.com: People belonged in pairs, she felt—male and female together, marching through life as if they were streaming aboard the ark. For this reason, she found homosexuality outlandish—not immoral, and certainly not to be criminalized, but a rude disruption in the natural order of things. Homophobia was a socially acceptable form of bigotry in midcentury America, and Julia and Paul participated without shame for many years. She often used the term pedal or pedalo—French slang for a homosexual—draping it with condescension, pity, and disapproval. “I had my hair permanented at E. Arden’s, using the same pedalo I had before (I wish all the men in OUR profession in the USA were not pedals!),” she wrote to Simca. Fashion designers were “that little bunch of Pansies,” a cooking school was “a nest of homovipers,” a Boston dinner party was “peopled by 3 fags in an expensive house…. We felt hopelessly square and left when decently possible,” and San Francisco was beautiful but full of pedals—“It appears that SF is their favorite city! I’m tired of them, talented though they are.” The opposite of homosexual, in her terminology, was “normal” or “well muscled” or “very masculine!” Or, as she often put it, “real male men.” Lesbianism was less of an affront to her, though she felt sorry for women so sexually benumbed that they were not attracted to men. (“Can’t be much fun.”)
