After WWII, Japan, a country that conquered China early in the 1900's was trying to recover from the war. When I was growing up the word cheap merchandise was synonymous with Japanese goods. However, they soon began to do much better. And, of course, now they build fine automobiles and other goods worthy of any nation. They went from serious foes to serious allies. One could hope for a similar result from China although the politics there are much different. However, the US is seriously behind and needs to do some catching up. Best regards, RA1

I completely agree that the US holds almost nothing other than dollar diplomacy to offset the Chinese threat. However, most of my life I have suffered from fear of nuclear war to include hiding under my school desk during defense trials. Now I am ALMOST of the opinion that if things get too raunchy a nuclear limited strike might cure a few ills. In the South a lot of white adult males refer to each other as "boy". Also, as one advances in age, a boy seems to become someone younger than 45 or so. Neither suggests any age younger than 18. A Southern racial slur that I recall my father (innocently using) was to call an older Black man, "young man" which seems to suggest he is still vigorous. In more recent times I have been called that by middle aged Black men. I mildly resented it and I am sure those my father called did also. I have never used such an appellation. OTOH I mildly resent Black boys (those much younger than 18) who object to being called "boy". This is a learned bad lesson. Some say the reason other countries spend less on healthcare is two fold. One they limit the amount and extent of health care and two their drugs are to some extent the result of the US paying for the development of new drugs. Also some think not all drugs available in the US are available elsewhere. I have friends in NZ and the UK. Some have been known to wait a LONG time for treatment. One died waiting. Thanks for your input. Being in hock to the Chinese may be most of what is preventing a war with them or their subjects. I agree we need to stop being the world's policeman. How do you propose reducing the cost of the US healthcare system? Universal Medicare would be more expensive. Any form of one payer system will be more expensive. I just don't understand. There is no doubt that Trump is a jerk (who isn't?) But is the US ready to accept radical changes in the economic climate? Most, if not all, of the various Demo proposals cannot be feasibly funded with any hope of continuance. We already are so far in hock I am only too glad not to be able to survive to see the results. Sure I want to help everybody. I want their health and welfare to be continued. But at what expense and who shall pay for it? 30 some odd years ago I was in Goose Bay when the temperature hit 90F. Most thought they had died and gone to hell but for Memphis (and me) it was just another summer day. That night the temp was 45 and everyone was happy again. The ice pack in the ocean around Greenland extended more than 100 miles that year.
