So, pols shouldn't give out contracts to those who helped them get elected? What a novel idea. This may be a case of the bureaucracy firmly entrenched. Many past presidents have found out to their chagrin that they were unable to accomplish their agenda without the onboard approval of the bureaucrats. JC comes to mind as a prime and maybe leading example of this but surely each and every president in memory had the same problem and result. However, BO made a lot of promises he knew or should have known he could not keep. That does not seem to deter pols as it should but nevertheless, he is now entitled to reap the whirlwind or the Rice Krispy's that are thrown his way. So far, it is just a few Krispy's thrown into a mild wind. Best regards, RA1

Red headed step children, often produced from neighbors hoping over the back fence. At least that is how one old Southern story goes. Best regards, RA1

Isn't politics always a possible issue when deciding who to prosecute? I had breakfast this morning with some old school chums. We were discussing the fact that Memphis has 12,000 unprocessed rape kits, some from 20+ years ago. This should be a big scandal but so far it is only a minor one. One of my friends works for a company that does DNA matching. His lab could handle 30 kits per day without any further equipment purchasing. 1500 kits per week would make a pretty good dent in the back log in a year. But, it will never happen. Why? The coroner's office will not allow anyone other than themselves to process the kits and they do not have the equipment. personnel or budget to accomplish this. Therefore, via a political process/decision we have a 20+ year backlog of kits. Shameful. Best regards, RA1

I agree that scientists have no stronger ties to ethical standards or knowledge thereof then anyone else. I also am aware of the pro and con arguments about whether the A-bombs did shorten the war and whether a demonstration would have been sufficient. Like most such arguments there are points on both sides. My question is, what will we learn from what might have happened principally because the answer is unknowable without going back 69 years and doing it all again but differently? There are a lot of things we can learn from the atomic age, to include learning to "live with the bomb" and, so far, limited proliferation. I consider both of these negative with unlimited proliferation among more negative possibilities. Unlimited nuclear war being the worst scenario, although numerous terrorist attacks using nuclear weapons would also be high on the negative list. Isn't the best thing we can learn is what not to do, although that is not working so far either? Best regards, RA1

Of course, of course. Man made totals are never the same as empirical totals, are they? Best regards, RA1

Prince Charles has always been an interesting character. I think he was much maligned about Princess Di who was undoubtedly a loose woman. I am trying to be polite. Royals are not normal in any context of which I am aware. Prince Charles as a woman might have been exceptional. Here I mean his attitude, character and results, so far. Regardless, I have "some" hope for William and Harry as far as royals go. Best regards, RA1

It has often been postulated that to maintain "equilibrium" that women should marry younger men. 20 years difference seems a little extreme but apparently not in this case as she still outlived him. I see she has adopted the American way of drinking, meaning to include frozen water in her drink. Good on her. Best regards, RA1

Forget The 50 States, U.S. Is Really 11 Nations, Says Author
RA1 replied to AdamSmith's topic in The Beer Bar
There may be some truth to "tendencies" among the regions listed but I think they are overbroad generalizations. The more I travel, the more I realize how alike various folks are and a lot of their differences are minor idiosyncrasies, more or less. Some like feet, some like butts, some like tits but we all like guys. Best regards, RA1 -

There are many criminals who have applied "cruel and unusual punishment" on their victims. I do not disagree that the death penalty has been applied unevenly and perhaps even unfairly but if we are going to have the death penalty, should we not try to solve those problems rather than just institute a ban? Even though I am not a big advocate of the death penalty, like the Supremes recounting their notice of porn, I know when the death penalty should be applied. What I don't know and think is a larger problem is how to stop recidivism. Best regards, RA1

I thought it was one out of four so if you are playing a four handed card game, one of the players is likely gay. If it is you, then likely more than one is gay. Best regards, RA1

Never heard of him. Did I miss him in both of my childhoods? Pilots are weird and I don't mind painters being weird but although squirrels are cute, in truth, they are nothing but rats with furry tails. I have learned to get over their cuteness, especially when they have gnawed on my roof and gotten into my attic. Best regards, RA1

Should A History of Smoking Crack Disqualify One From Office?

I believe that "thing" ones stands on to be weighed is called a platform, not a stage; but, in the case it is a mayor (or any pol) being weighed I guess it is a stage. Best regards, RA1 -

Slightly different topic. When Gillette got their first Gulfstream many year ago, they needed to do "proving runs" which basically meant flying it around without passengers. The pilots asked their wives to go to lunch one day and they flew to Bermuda. Fun for all. Also, I think I remember that Gillette did a LOT of business in South America and derived a large percentage of their business therefrom. There was some "manly" reason for this but I have forgotten what it is. Best regards, RA1
