As I reported in the laptop-vs-desktop thread, I let my laptop get stolen recently. That was the insult, but the injury was because I had grown lax in my data backup discipline. Now, a local backup device -- say, an Apple Time Machine -- would have been nifty. Except that was stolen too. Arghh. Putting aside questions of who I am foolish enough to let in my door, it occurred that my visitors would have had a hard time making off with Amazon's servers. So... Does anyone have experience or knowledge of the various hosted backup services out there? Mozy, iCloud, Dropbox, etc.? If this has been covered previously, just point me there. Many thanks.

Was about to hijack this thread entirely to the subject of backup tools/methods, but instead think I will now go start a new thread specifically on Cloud-Based Data Backup. See y'all there, I hope.

If JK did not say it enough: BACK UP!!! Last month my laptop was stolen right out of my apartment, while I was there no less. Friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend who turned out not to be. Stupid me for falling prey, but far stupider me for having fallen way behind on the backup regime. Hardware is merdeware compared with the data.

Aha. (?)

YES! They are getting it right. There was high excitement over this at last summer's annual fan convention... http://www.darkshadowsfestival.com Even curmudgeonly Frid expressed confidence that Depp and Burton would capture the essence. (As, regrettably, the '90-'91 Ben Cross TV revival largely failed to do.) Can't wait to see Helena Bonham Carter's turn as Julia Hoffman. Grayson Hall, alas, passed away just before I first attended the fan fest years ago.

Even the twinkiest of my objects of desire need to show some modicum of secondary sex characteristics. Never got it on for di Caprio for same reason. Caeron got it right!

Wouldn't lesbians "matronize" them? Seriously, one can agree with universal civil union in principle but is there any realistic hope of getting such a change accepted in our lifetimes? Meanwhile the social ground has proven remarkably ready for expanding civil marriage proper to same-sex couples. Again, note the general population appears majority to understand it is a question of legal rights (and respect) conferred by civil marriage, not primarily a quarrel with religious institutions. That quarrel of course may be and is being pursued, but a completely separate issue, pursued through different means.

Stopped reconciling checkbook ledger with statement 15 years ago, or even keeping running balance in checkbook. Use ATM to check current balance. When paying bills online couple times per month, I eyeball online statement to be sure I recognize all transactions. Never any problems to date, even though my bank is the deservedly reviled BofA.

MsGuy apogizes. He meant to say "...come in FOURS." To be sure of covering both brothers Koch. (Hito, remember MsGuy is a Southern gentleman. Just like you and me!)

This idiot's bloviations are just one more thing to fill up what print media dignify as the "news hole" -- that pesky space between the ads. Cameron used to be a star; today he is a professional crank. Thus the media know enough viewers/readers will follow the story, whether they love or loathe him. As this thread shows.

Hito, you make the "invisible hand" sound a little bit naughty! Love it.

Flights, business meetings and doctor appointments are things I put on my calendar and always do. Other than those, the more important something is, the more likely I will put it off til the last minute. We had a thread here before where several of us recalled how our best college papers came out of all-nighters right before the thing was due.

On my iPhone, when I click "Keep me logged in for 2 weeks" during login process, I only stay logged in for about 24 hours. I never turn the iPhone off, if that would have any bearing. Advice?

Anybody ethnic -- for me, that means Latino, Asian, black. Funny -- I pick up and hire white guys too, but just don't get off on them in pics/flicks that much. Wonder what gives?

Nobody like Rodney. In movie "Back to School" he's sitting in hot tub with beautiful blond chick. "So you're an English major? Maybe you can help me straighten out my Longfellow!"

American must have an Executive Vice President of How to Suck Shit in Every Possible Way. With a sub-VP dedicated to fucking with the mileage program. Couple weeks ago I redeemed some miles to buy what would have been a $179 or $209 one-way ticket. Well, just as Lucky found last year, turns out that since it was within 21 days of the flight, there was a $75 fee for "expedited processing" of the mileage redemption. Purest piratical horseshit. As Lucky said, it is the same click of a button either way. Used to involve a rigamarole of sending in for paper redemption chits etc., but today it can be all-digital, whether near- or longer-term purchase. Hmmmph!

iPhone as of mid-last-year, after years of Blackberries.Took me 2-3 months to get used to touch-screen keypad; suffered button withdrawal then, but today can barely stand to mess with physical keyboard when borrowing somebody's Blackberry. Habits are funny.

Whatever it is, I approve. Every "just dessert" should involve pickles! (Ask TY. Or, rather, don't. )

Wonderful! See also http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concerto_for_Horn_and_Hardart More (slightly) to the point... http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horn_%26_Hardart

Thanks. That does clarify it. (Also reveals my knee-jerk that if Repubs are doing it, they must be up to something sneaky and faintly extra-legal. )

Huh?! Does this group have standing? If so, how? Lucky? MsGuy? Anybody?

Glad it struck a chord. Aren't they horrible? Also agree that these kids with >50% of skin inked up are just ugly. Unless you are Maori, keep it to one tribal armband.

Depends. From my experience, Cubans and Puerto Ricans are very often (alas!) cut. Anyone else notice any such country-of-origin patterns?
