I went to Bar Fama on a Saturday night a couple weekends ago for the first time based on this recommendation. I think with all the new lighting that they put in for the World Cup/Olympics, which lights up Copacabana beach at night, some of us may have felt a little safer on the beach as the sun goes down. I was there a few months ago and was continuing to hang out on the beach at dusk with a Brazilian guy feeling relatively safe when one of the vendors came over to us and advised us to leave. After being told by the guys at Pointe not to come there on Monday but to go to the new sauna, Estacao in Botafogo, I decided to give it a try on Monday a couple weeks ago. The entrance fee was 30 realis and it was a 15 minute walk from the Botafogo subway station. The sauna is extremely small and when I arrived around 8:30 pm, there were two clients (including myself), two garotos working, the doorman, the bartender, the massage therapist and one guy taking care of the rooms. While generally nice and new (except the lockers came from Pointe), I don’t think the sauna will last long unless things change and a lot of garotos and clients start going there, but will be interesting to see now that this is Junior's only sauna . I also found that HSBC gave one of the most competitive exchange rates when I used their ATM's. I've used Citibank, HSBC and Bradesco all within 10 minutes of each other on a weekend and received the best exchange rate from HSBC. Sorry to hear that they are pulling out of Brazil as they were my preferred bank when I was in Brazil. What other banks will let you take out 1000 plus reais per day?

Once you get the Brazil sim card, if you want to maintain it for future trip, you need to add money to your prepaid account usually at least once every three months otherwise the number will expire and you will need to get a new sim card once you return to Brazil. You can view your account online, along with the expiration date of the sim before you have to recharge, but be sure to get the password associated with your account when you are in Brazil (most cellular companies send you a text message with the password). You can recharge the sim account using one of the many services that allow you to "Top Up" accounts in foreign countries. One challenge I have had is US credit cards are often declined. If you have this issue, consider using Paypal if you have an account and it is an option on the site as it works with no issues.

It sounds like you have gotten the advice you needed and are considering letting him go. As TomCal has said many times, these guys give Academy Award winnign performances so be ready if and when you tell him. You will have many tears (I have never seen so many grown men cry as I have with Brazilian garotos), countless messages telling you that he loves you and that he want wants to continue the relationship, pictures being sent to you and a list of reasons why things did not work out in the past but assuring you that everything will be great in the future. Keep in mind that Lagoa has different prices other nights as well based on whether you pay in cash or use a credit card. The initial bill they show you will have the higher credit card price, so if you are paying in cash, be sure and make sure you get the discounted rate that they are offering. It will be posted on the wall behind the front desk. For example, this past weekend it was 60 realis if you paid using a credit card and 50 realis if you paid in cash.
