I agree. And it is not only businesses who encroach on sidewalks but private people as well, putting plants, chairs there. Staying at Babylon, I like to walk from there to everywhere else for miles. No soon did they nicely paved the streets close to it a few years ago, the sidewalks immediately filled up with junk, including utility poles that block the walk. So one has to do much walking on the street, with motorcycles, cars passing by, while the sidewalks are resting places for plants, chairs, tables, stalls, etc. I always wished to have a huge vacuum that could suck all that up and leave a clean street. Of course I also feel bad for the modest people who make a living in this encroached space, while I am just a tourist who wants to walk comfortably.

It goes beyond being legal or not. It is a matter of privacy. If someone steals my laptop or tablet and gains access to the files in it, or if I inadvertently leave it unprotected, it can reveal information I like to keep private. This goes not only for gay porn but for any other confidential information. This is the reason I create encrypted files with truecrypt. They are easy to create, and easy to mount as virtual disks to access the content. On log out or shut down, the virtual disks in memory go up in cyber-smoke. I doubt that the operating system makes any copies. Instead it may create shortcuts to the files. Windows saves pointers to recently accessed files. But if the encrypted volume is dismounted, it cannot find the files.

On my home computer I take my favorite photos and encrypt them with truecrypt. The encrypted file I copy to my laptop that I take on trips. Then to view the photos the laptop creates a virtual disk in memory from the encrypted file, without writing anything to disk. I understand that truecrypt also exists for tablets with Android.

What we individuals can do, I think, is to vote for progressive governments that take notice of this problem. Even if that means voting for Hillary instead of Trump
